We regret to announce the passing of Miss Mary MacNeil of 37 Charlotte St., Sydney, on Wednesday, May 17, 2000.
Mary became an important member of the Rigby family 32 years ago and has shared in all our joys and sorrows. Mary will be missed dearly now that she lives with God.
She is survived by her sister, Sr. Dorothy MacPhee; nephew, Kye, New Waterford; niece, Lynne, New Waterford; and the Rigby family, Mrs. Sadie Rigby, cousin and best friend; Charles, Douglas, Sharon, Valerie, Lawrence, Kathleen, Craig, Charlie and Morgan.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will take place at Sacred Heart Church, Saturday at 9 a.m. Prayers to Saint Theresa. Special thanks to Valerie.
Leo Joseph Penney
74, Sydney
Leo Joseph Penney, 74, of 37 Hillview Ave., Sydney, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Obeline (Pottie) Penney.
Leo worked at Sydney Steel for 42 years as a crane operator in the open hearth stripper, retiring in 1984. Leo was closely associated with the Cape Breton School of Crafts, Old Sydney Society, Cape Breton Center for Heritage and Science and the Lyceum Heritage Society. He had taken great care of Jost House, St. Pat’s Museum, Cossitt House and the Lyceum doing “Mr. Fix-it Jobs.” He will be remembered and much loved for his kindness, compassion and humour.
Left to mourn are his wife, Shirley Eileen (Mercer) after 55 years of marriage; daughter, Leona Marie (Keith MacDonald), Sydney; son, Thomas J., Toronto; four grandchildren, Kevin, Penney, Brendan, and Devin, all of Sydney. Also left to mourn are his brother, Vincent (Meryl), Sydney; sisters, Margaret (Fred) Longaphy, Halifax, Mrs. Jenny (Sarah) Gammon, Sheet Harbour, Mrs. Catherine (Kay) Libbey, Sydney, and Helen (Frank) MacDonald, Sydney. Also a brother-in-law, Paul Chiasson, a sister-in-law, Alice Penney, and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by a brother, John Thomas and a sister, Martha and by a sister, Theresa in infancy and a brother, Tom in infancy.
The late Mr. Penney will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Church, Cabot Street, with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sydney Unit, the St. Joseph’s Parish Building Fund or a charity of choice.
Alice Mary Penny
79, Sydney
Alice Mary Penny, 79, Virginia Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in D’Escousse, Richmond Co., Alice was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ann (Landry) Poirier.
Alice was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and the Sydney Pensioners Club. She was a volunteer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and an avid tarabish player.
Surviving Alice is her daughter, Ann (Joseph) Mombourquette, Sydney; seven sons, Tom (Marguerite), Sydney, Lorne (Jean), British Columbia, Gerald (Florence), Prime Brook, Wayne (Mary), Sydney, Ronnie (Marcina), Prime Brook, Frank (Roberta), Sydney, and Rev. Phillip (Maurina), New Brunswick; a sister, Cecilia McNarmara, Evanston, Richmond County, 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford in 1981, a sister, Louise Scanlan, and a brother, Victor.
Visitation was held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday 7-9 p.m. and will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Saturday 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Lynn (Corbett) MacIsaac
45, New Waterford
Lynn (Corbett) MacIsaac, 45, New Waterford, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of Harry and Lorna Corbett, New Waterford.
She is survived by her husband, Sandy; sons, Michael (Nicole) and Mark, New Waterford; sister, Karen (Phil) Sceviour, Lower Sackville; brothers, John (Cathy) Corbett, Campbell River, B.C. and Paul (Araksi) Corbett, Calgary, Alta.; granddaughter, Emily, New Waterford, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jimmy Corbett, New Waterford.
No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. in Saint Agnes Church with Fr. Robert Neville officiating. Interment to follow at Forest Haven Cemetery.

Christine Catherine (Chris) MacLeod
88, Framboise
MACLEOD: Christine Catherine (Chris); 88, of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, formerly of Framboise, Richmond County, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the nursing home.
Born in Framboise, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Sarah Katie (MacKillop) MacLeod.
She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid, Framboise and the Eastern Star.
Surviving are daughters, Diane Theuerkauf, Antigonish, Marjorie Lafreniere (Andre), Fenlon Falls, Ont.; grandchildren, Bethany, Benjamin, Breanna, Daniel Brock, all of Antigonish; brothers, Peter MacLeod, White Plains, N.Y., Roy MacLeod, Nattick, Mass.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dan Norman, son, J. Douglas, sisters, Mary MacLeod, Agnes MacLean, brother, Neiland MacLeod.
Visitation 3-5, 7-9 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Framboise where funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in the church cemetery.

Evelyn Roach
83, Scotchtown
Evelyn Roach, 83, formerly of Scotchtown, passed away peacefully at the C.N.D. Healthcare Centre, Sydney on Friday, May 19, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Stephen N. and Mary (Minnie) MacKinnon.
She was first employed in the business office of Eastern Bakery, Sydney. Following her marriage and for the next 20 years, she and her late husband, Henry operated a family grocery store in Scotchtown. In 1967 she began work in the Sydney office of the Department of Social Services, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Michael's Parish, River Ryan and was active in church and community affairs.
Evelyn's love of family gatherings and music gave her much pleasure. She was ever family-oriented and was revered and dearly loved by many members of her extended family.
Surviving are two daughters, Claire (Art) Timmons, New Waterford, Sr. Eileen, CND, New Waterford; two sons, Gordon (Debbie), Riverview, N.B., William (Corinne), New Waterford. Also surviving are two sisters, Doris (Mike) Laffin, New Waterford, Sr. Hilda, CND, Sydney; six brothers, Wilfred (Cecilia), Newfoundland, John (Alberta), Ontario, Stephen (Friederika), Arizona, Ronald (Delores), Rev. Leonard, Gordon, Sydney and eight grandchildren, Lorne, Celeste, Michael, Christopher, Meghann, Eileen, David and Corson.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry, three sisters, Claire, Sr. Regis, CND, Rene and one brother, Michael.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Roach will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Smith Street, New Waterford, Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, River Ryan Monday, 10 a.m. with burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MacGillivray Guest Home or St. Michael's Building Fund.
