Lois Gertrude Zillman
72, Glace Bay
Lois Gertrude Zillman, 72, died in the early hours of Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
She was surrounded by the love of her partner in marriage of 53 years, Albert and their two daughters, Marguerite of Deep River, Ont. and Anne of Dominion.
She was a lifelong resident of Dominion and active in the day-to-day happenings of the community.
An ardent follower of the political scene, she served as presiding officer during many federal and provincial elections. Known to a wide circle of family and acquaintances as a great lover of life and people, she gave freely of her time and caring to all who crossed her threshold. She loved music and played both piano and organ. She sang both church and popular music with ease and fervour. She was the organist at the Good Shepherd Church in Dominion at one time.
She was a full time wife, mother and grandmother. She was an accomplished seamstress using her talent to grace her family and home. She was employed by both Gerd's Tailor Shop and Toby's, Glace Bay in the same capacity.
Although ill at home for a long time, she continued to be creative right up to her last illness, making beautiful crocheted doilies as both gifts and donations to local craft sales. Throughout her early life, she clerked at a number of local stores, including Mitchell's General Store, and various family owned businesses, ice cream parlor, grocery store and pool room in Dominion.
She and Albert (Putter) loved the Margaree Valley and kept a summer home there. She enjoyed countless summers and holidays with him and their children and grandchildren in the valley's beautiful ambience. She loved to receive the company of her many friends and family there during the summer months and enjoyed the sport of snowmobiling in winter. The cottage door, again, was always open.
Lois was the youngest child of the late Ethel and W.G. Wilson of Dominion and was predeceased by brothers, Bobby and George.
She is survived by her oldest daughter, Marguerite Peori, Deep River and her children, Jennifer, Vancouver and Sean, Deep River, Ont. and her younger daughter, Anne (Valley) Facchin and their children, Derek and Nicole, Dominion. She is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Erica. She was sister to Rhoda Lewis, River Ryan, Clara (Neil) Thomson, Polly Wynn, Dominion and Vivian Melanson and Doug (Margaret) Wilson, Glace Bay, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd congregation.
She is being waked at the McGillivray Funeral Home, Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Family and friends will be received Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral from the Good Shepherd Church, Dominion, Monday, 2 p.m. with interment to be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road. The Rev. Margaret Collins officiating.
Donations in Lois's memory to The Lung Association of Nova Scotia are suggested as expressions of sympathy.
Annie L. (Thurbide) Holmes
75, North Sydney
Annie L. (Thurbide) Holmes, 75, a resident of 208 Mapleview Drive, North Sydney, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Lillian (Greaves) Thurbide. Annie was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by a daughter, Lillian Holmes-MacLean, Sydney, two grandchildren, Jason and Amanda, three sisters, Stella Edmunds, Sydney Mines, Mae Scott, North Sydney and Cavell Nickel, Toronto, two brothers, Ian, Toronto and Cameron, Swift Current, Sask. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Annie was predeceased by her husband Charlie Holmes.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Dominic James Robert Candelora
18, Sydney
Dominic James Robert Candelora, 18, of Lingan Road, Sydney, died suddenly on Sunday, May 21, 2000.
Robert was a Grade 11 student at Sydney Academy high school. He was an avid hockey player and a great friend to all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his kindness, his charming sense of humour and for his smile.
Robert is survived by his loving parents, Dominic James and Dorothy Virginia (Magee); one brother, Andrew Keith (Mrs. Beverly (Coffin) Candelora); three sisters, Dawna Michelle (Mrs. Paul Leon), Leanne Marie and Domini Melissa; and also by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, James and Lucy Candelora, Sydney and maternal grandparents, Edwin and Virginia Magee, Saint John, N.B.
The late Mr. Candelora will have visitation today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, upper level. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Search and Rescue or a charity of one’s choice.
Margaret Cameron Gillis
82, Sydney
Margaret Cameron Gillis, 82, a long-time resident of Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, May 22, 2000.
Born in Big Pond, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Anne (MacIntyre) MacNeil.
She was a long-time member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by daughter, Dianne (Norm) Ferguson, Sydney; four sons, Allan (Ruth), Litchfield, Neil (Sandra), Toronto, Gordon (Patsy), Sydney, and Stanley (Ellen) Markham; daughter-in-law, Joan Gillis, Boston; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Bernard, son, Bernard, two children in infancy, one grandson, Christopher Gillis, one great-grandchild, Sean, four brothers, Steve, Peter, John and Neil, three sisters, Mary MacKinnon, Theresa MacAskill and Tena Marley.
The late Mrs. Gillis will have visitation today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, main level. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Mary Rosena MacDonald
92, Sydney
Mary Rosena MacDonald, 92, of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, formerly of Westmount, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2000, at home.
Born in Cape North, she was a daughter of the late John and Christine (MacKinnon) MacLean.
She was an adherent of Westmount United Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol MacAskill, Edwardsville; two sons, James, Keltic Drive and Gordon, Edwardsville; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and a special grandson, John.
She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel, daughter, Jean Musgrave and three brothers, Roddie, John and Neil.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Reid Tait
57, Sydney Mines
Mr. Francis Reid Tait, 57, of 19 Queen St., Sydney Mines, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Theodore and Catherine (MacLeod) Tait.
He was a computer analyst for Devco for 27 years, at H.B. Nickerson and most recently with Keane Canada Inc. He was an avid fan of music, especially, “The Blues” and Reid was a kind and caring person, whose life touched many. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A loving husband, father and friend, he is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Lee Anne (Thomas) Mullins, Dartmouth; son, Roger (Eileen) Tait, Carver, Mass.; stepdaughter, Lurena (Brian) Gillis; stepson, Steven (Charlene) Scott; seven grandchildren, Evan Mullins, Jenna Mullins, Jessica Mullins, Priya Tait, Riley Gillis, Bretony Gillis and Brittany Scott; sister, Maureen (Lewis) Fahey, North Sydney; brother, Lorne (Lynn) Tait, Newcastle, Ont.; aunts, Jean (David) Lennox and Mary Patterson; uncles, Stuart (Betty) Tait and Neil (Florence) MacLeod; niece, Julie Ann Fahey; nephews, Kevin Fahey, Blaine Tait; and many cousins.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Murdock MacRae officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
