Lauchie Gillis
77, Grand Mira
Lauchlin Alexander Gillis, 77, of 30 Mapleridge Dr., Sydney, formerly of Grand Mira, passed away at the residence, Tuesday, May 23, 2000.
Born in Grand Mira, he was the son of the late Joseph V. and Margaret E. (Gillis) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish, Grand Mira. Lauchie worked in the Cape Breton area as a self-employed carpenter and contractor for almost 50 years retiring in 1988.
He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Stella Fraser, New York, Margaret (Mrs. Leonard Crisp), Arkansas, Mrs. Sarah Black, Westmount, Mrs. Helen MacNeil, Sydney; three brothers, Colin (Frances), Sydney, Duncan (Adeline), Boston and John Allan (Joan), Grand Mira and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Alberta Black.
The late Mr. Gillis will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday in St. Margaret’s Church with the Rev. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment in St. Margaret’s Parish Cemetery, Grand Mira.

Daniel Roy MacLean
67, Sydney Mines
Daniel Roy MacLean, 67, of RR No. 3, Barrachois Harbour, formerly of Church Street, Sydney Mines, died suddenly Monday, May 22, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Frank and Annie (Jones) MacLean.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Parish, Boisdale.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa (Vickers); sons, Roy Jr. (Elaine) and Frank (Twila); daughter, Heather (Gary); seven grandchildren, who meant the world to him, Craig, Yvette, Cheryl, Apryl, Michael, Twila and Leah. Also surviving are his sisters, Dorothy Hawboldt and Nerta Jerrett; many nieces and nephews and his mother-in-law, Margaret Vickers, who loved and respected him.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Monty.
In his younger years Roy worked at the Sydney Mines Co-operative, then for 16 years at Princess Colliery as a rope splicer and as a journeyman bricklayer before starting his own business. He was owner and operator of Roy MacLean and Sons Ltd., Sydney Mines, employing many people over a period of 17 years, working proudly with his two sons. Roy then worked for Gillis Home Care and Superior Truss Ltd. until his retirement. He was an avid sportsman, loved fishing, hunting, hockey and baseball, playing the guitar and since retiring, Roy really enjoyed bird watching.
He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren. “Poppy” was everything a grandfather could be and they loved him dearly.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Church, Boisdale with the Rev. J.A. MacNeil officiating.

John Michael (Jake) Johnston
65, Sydney Forks
John Michael (Jake) Johnston, 65, of 2407 Kings Rd., Sydney Forks, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Detroit, Mich., he moved to Meadows Road, Sydney Forks, as an infant. He was the son of the late James Johnston and Theresa (Gillis) Johnston Willis.
He was employed with LeVatte’s Construction and Doug Burns Construction until his retirement in 1990 due to illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, the former Patricia LeClair; three sons, Bernie (Joy), Meadows Road, John, Sydney Forks and Michael (Shelly), Howie Center; two daughters, Marie (Mike) Worthington, at home, and Michelle (Kevin) MacKinnon, Meadows Road; one sister, Evelyn (Wilf) Hardy, North Sydney. He will also be sadly missed by his 14 grandchildren, Danielle and Breagh Johnston, Johnny, Natalia and Alyssa Johnston, Michael and Bradley Cook, Kristen, Kayla and Jason MacKinnon, Kyle, Brittney, John and Shayne Johnston. Also survived by a special nephew, Leonard (Joanne) MacKinnon, special grandniece Cassandra MacKinnon, Westmount; special niece, Theresa Harding, Maine, U.S.A.; nephews, John and Thomas Hardy, North Sydney; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Anna and Donald MacInnis, Grand Narrows; and his mother-in-law, Ella Bastien, Breton Bay Nursing Home.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Ed Willis, North Sydney, a grandson, Joseph Patrick Johnston and his father-in-law, Roy Bastien.
There will be visitation Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund or to a charity of choice.
Donald Morrison
85, Wreck Cove
Donald Morrison, 85, of Wreck Cove, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Wreck Cove, N.S., he was the son of the late Angus L. and Katie (MacLeod) Morrison.
He was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Birch Plain, N.S. Donald was self-employed in farming, fishing and lumber business. Donald was a friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by a brother, Dan Murdock, Baddeck and a sister, Sarah Ann (Sadie) Gillan, Sydney Mines and also by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Alexander (Sandy) and sisters, Maisie, Tena and Jessie and a nephew, Donald Gillan.
The body is resting at Calvin Presbyterian Church with visiting hours today (Thursday) from 6-9 p.m. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Calvin Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lloyd Murdock assisted by Shirley Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck or Calvin Presbyterian Church.

Lisa Marie MacNeil
20, Halifax/Dominion
Lisa Marie McNeil, 20, of Halifax and formerly of Dominion, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2000, as the result of a house fire in Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Gary and Kendra (Wadden) McNeil.
Lisa was a former member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion. She received her education in Dominion.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Brianna Elizabeth McNeil, Dominion; brothers, Brian, Pictou and Derrick, Dominion; sisters, Linda, Tower Road and Ashley, at home; maternal grandparents, Theresa Polegato, Dominion and Jim Wadden, Port Hawkesbury. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Lisa was predeceased by paternal grandparents, John and Caroline McNeil and maternal great-grandparents, Anthony and Ada Wadden.
Visitation for the late Ms. McNeil will be held Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, 11 a.m. at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Donations in Lisa’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Catherine Vimy Nicholson
80, Glace Bay
Catherine Vimy Nicholson, 80, a long-time resident of 55 Minto St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, May 23, 2000, surrounded by her loving family, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Born in Halifax, she was the eldest daughter of the late John (Jack Cy) and Catherine (Hurley) MacDonald.
Catherine was a long-time member of St. Leo’s Parish, Glace Bay. In her earlier years, she served on the Ladies Auxiliary of both Holy Family, MacKay’s Corner and St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen and was a dedicated visitor to the sick and shut-in at the hospitals. Catherine received great pleasure watching the children play little league baseball.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph and Daniel (Genevieve) both of Glace Bay; two daughters, Dianne Zamora, Phoenix, Ariz. and Dorothy (Lawrence) Ferguson, Sydney; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Edith (Bernard) MacGillivary, Genevieve (John) Lee, Lorraine (Earl) Abbott and brother, Patrick (Jean) MacDonald, all of Glace Bay. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 40 years, Joseph, brothers, Allan and John, sisters, Dorothy Clarke and Brenda Murphy.
Visitation for the late Catherine Nicholson will be held Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. at St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
