James Sturgess
71, Cornwall, Ont./Glace Bay
James Sturgess, 71, of Cornwall, Ont. and formerly of Glace Bay, passed Sunday, May 21, 2000.
He is survived his son, Shawn (Wendy), daughter, Shannon (Robert Bears), two grandsons, Joshua and Cody and two granddaughters, Brittany and Courtney, all of Ontario; sister, Flora Larson, British Columbia; his former wife, Viola MacIntyre, Ontario.
Predeceased by daughter, Joanna Lynn and brothers, Edward, Raymond and sisters, Lois, Margaret and Fanny.
Funeral will be held at Lahey and Sullivan Funeral Home in Cornwall, Ont.
Donations can be made to the Diabetic Association.
Roy Martin Campbell, B.Comm, C.A.
Halifax
With sorrow we announce the death of Roy Martin Campbell after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., Dec. 29, 1921. He was the son of the late Floyd and Katherine Mary (Martin) Campbell.
He was the cherished husband of Anne for 54 years and will be sadly missed by his children, Janet, Ottawa, Andrew (Nancy), Dartmouth, grandchildren, Scott and Nicholas.
Roy served overseas during the Second World War with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. A graduate of Dalhousie University he obtained his C.A. designation in 1954. His business career was with Bathurst Power and Paper, Hermes Electronics, Province of Nova Scotia and the federal government. He was a member of the Standards Council of Canada.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. A reception will follow.

Alice Marie (Mahoney) Gillis
87, Scotchtown
Alice Marie (Mahoney) Gillis, 87, a former resident of Scotchtown and a resident of the Maple Hill Manor, passed away peacefully in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Thursday, May 25, 2000.
Born in Stockcove, Nfld. on May 28, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Mahoney. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church.
Surviving are six children, Sheila (Edward) Coish, Jean (Delbert) Young, Pauline (Ricky) Martin and Johnie, all of New Waterford, Mary “Betty” (Edvardo) Escobar, Dartmouth, Marilyn (Ron) Eastabrook, Fredericton, N.B.; three stepchildren, Ronnie (Lois), Edmonton, Alta., Hughie (Hughette), London, Ont. and David, Sydney. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; brother, Michael and a sister, Lucy, both of Gander, Nfld.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Nelson Durdle, second husband, Ronald Gillis and recently a daughter, Marguerite (Durdle) MacDonald, whom she spoke of so often and missed so very much; also predeceased by a brother, Pat Mahoney.
There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorial mass to be held Saturday, 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maple Hill Manor.

Susanna (Sue) Florence (Grove) Morgan
83, Glace Bay
Susanna (Sue) Florence (Groves) Morgan, 83, of 46 Sterling Rd., Glace Bay, formerly of 10 Churchill Center, and Victoria Haven Nursing Home, New Aberdeen, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Petiles, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (Collins) Groves Talbot.
She came to Glace Bay at the age of eight and resided in the Hub for several years. Mrs. Morgan was a valued member of Warden United Church, a member of Warden senior choir, president of the Wesley Unit and a member of the UCW; she was also an active card player.
Mrs. Morgan is survived by two sons, Fred (Carolyn), Sydney, George (Diane), New Aberdeen; two daughters, Laura (Peter) Sutherland, Kamloops, B.C., Shirley (Buddy) Peach, Sydney River; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Lil Talbot; sisters-in-law, Alice Groves, Toronto and Jess Groves, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Mose Morgan, brothers, George and Eli, sister, Lucy Parson and a brother, John in infancy.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 26, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Warden United Church, Glace Bay with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway.

George Nelson Prosser
93, Whitney Pier
George Nelson Prosser, of Mercer Street, Whitney Pier, passed away in his 93rd year at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, May 25, 2000.
Born in Isle Aux Mort, Nfld., he was the son of the late Edward and Adeline (Clarke) Prosser.
George spent his early years as a fisherman in Newfoundland. He was a member of the Merchant Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy and was retired from the Steel Plant and the Corps of Commissioners. A life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier, George was an avid dart player with the Senior Men’s League.
He was predeceased by his wife, Emma, sons, Ralph, Kenneth and Donald, brothers, William, Albert and Walter, a sister, Minnie, grandchildren, Sharon, Cheryl, Barry and Todd and a great-grandchild, Ryan.
George is survived by his sons, Randolph (Theresa), Sydney, George (Sally), Coxheath and Walter, Vancouver; daughters, Ruth (Lloyd) Evely, Loretta Lewis and Adeline (Donald) Luckie, all of Sydney; a sister, Melita Allard, Montreal; daughter-in-law, Golda, Halifax; 34 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will he held at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Saturday 11 a.m., with Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Mary Sarah (Sally) Smith
87, Barra Head
Mary Sarah (Sally) Smith, 87, of Barra Head, Richmond County, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, surrounded by her loving family.
Born at Middle Cape, she was the daughter of the late Michael Neil and Sarah Anne (Gillis) MacPherson.
Sally was a long-time and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Barra Head.
She will always be remembered for her love of family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Most of her life was devoted to the many acts of kindness and the loving care of foster children.
She is survived by her two sons, George Keats (Teresa), Sydney River, Jimmie (Bertha), Northside East Bay; and one daughter, Debbie (Marvin) Burke, Barra Head, with whom she resided. Also surviving are two sisters, Joan Donovan, Norwood, Mass. and twin sister, Agnes Gillis, Gillisdale; one brother, John MacPherson, Sydney. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Karen (Terry) Lawrence, Terrance, Janice and Mary Smith, Tanya, Robyn and Angela Smith, Amanda and Trevor Burke; one great-granddaughter, Brittany Lawrence. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sally was predeceased by her husband, Horatius in 1989. She was also predeceased by sisters, Anna Devereaux-Smythe and Mary Sanford, brother, Duncan and a brother, Peter in infancy.
Visitation will be held Saturday 2-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-9 p.m. in Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head with Fr. Francis Cameron officiating. Interment will be in parish cemetery.
