Donald J. Stewart
71, North Sydney
Donald Joseph Stewart, 71, a resident of Spruce Street, North Sydney, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Harbour Breton, Nfld., he was a son of the late Arthur and Mary Ellen (Cox) Stewart.
He was employed as a stone polisher with John D. Steele and Sons Monuments in North Sydney for 38 years. Donald was an avid trout fisherman. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, Zita (Harding); two sons, William (Bill) (wife Sandra), Shelburne, N.S. and Lloyd, North Sydney; four grandchildren, Chris, T.J., Stephen and Raylene; four brothers, Lawrence, Stan, Kerwin and Frankie, three sisters, Frances (Mrs. Tom Stacey), Emily, Joan (Mrs. Gordon Meade), all of Harbour Breton, Nfld.
Donald was predeceased by three sisters, Sylvia, Lorraine and Helen, three brothers, Bill, George and Bernie.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral mass Monday 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

John William Swan
84, Bras d'Or
John William Swan, 84, a resident of Bras d’Or, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, May 23, 2000.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late John James and Stella (Jessome) Swan.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. He worked for many years as a coal miner at Sullivan Mines on the Half-way Road, Sydney Mines.
Surviving are his four sisters, Beatrice Richardson, North Sydney, Elizabeth Corkery and Marguerite Corkery, both of Sydney Mines and Catherine King, a resident of Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his four brothers, Clifton, Emmanuel, Stephen and Din and his six sisters, Patricia, Frances, Elsie, Emily, Mary and Catherine in infancy.
Visitation today (Friday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Elizabeth Agnes Barrett
83, Glace Bay
Elizabeth Agnes Barrett, 83, of 88 Beacon St., Glace Bay, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Center.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alex J. and Catherine (Brown) MacNeil.
Elizabeth belonged to St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was an avid bridge player and she always loved gathering with her friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Dougie MacFarlane), Terrace, B.C.; four sons, Ronnie (Catherine Campbell) Barrett, Acton, Ont., Pat and Jamie, both of Fall River, Roddie (Paulette Platte) Barrett, Nepean, Ont.; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Margaret MacNeil, Rita MacNeil, both of Glace Bay and Mary Palson, Winnipeg; three brothers, Francis MacNeil, Ronald MacNeil and Gussie MacNeil, all of Glace Bay.
She was predeceased by her husband, Maxwell Barrett, brothers, Terrance, Joe, Michael and Roddie, a sister, Teresa Pratte.
Visitation will take place Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday 9:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Daniel Alexander Buchanan
83, Westmount
Daniel Alexander Buchanan, 83, of Midgley Drive, Westmount, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Indian Brook, Victoria County, Daniel was a son of the late Murdock and Annie (Morrison) Buchanan.
During the Second World War, Daniel served with the West Nova Scotia Highlanders. After 37 years, he retired from the No. 3 boiler, Sydney Steel. Daniel was a member of the Westmount United Church, the Westmount Volunteer Fire Department, Riverdale Seniors Club, Spanish River Seniors Club, Sydney Pensioners Club, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126, Westmount.
Daniel was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his three daughters, Joan (Mike) MacEachern, Westmount, Dorothy (Joe) March, Westmount, Carol (John) Abbott, Port Hawkesbury and three grandchildren, David Abbott and Robert and Jason March.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah, sisters, Catherine MacKenzie, Mary Morrison and Sarah Smith and brothers, Murdock John and M.J.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel (today) Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in Westmount United Church, Sunday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Pine Hill Cemetery, River Bennett.
Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care or the Westmount United Church.

John Neil Ferguson
70, Sydney
John Neil Ferguson, 70, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Cottage Road, Sydney, passed away Friday, May 26, 2000, at Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born in Iron Mines, Inverness County, John was a son of the late Alex Frank and Johnena (Campbell) Ferguson.
For 26 years, John served with the Canadian Armed Forces. In 1990, he retired after 12 years as maintenance supervisor at The Cove. He was an elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a member of the Board of Managers and Property Committee for the church. John was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of the Kiwanis Golden K Club of Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, Helen (Embree); daughter, Katherine (Graham) Gagne, Shubenacadie, N.S.; sons, Kenneth (Linda), Florenceville, N.B., Keith (Carol), Sydney, Alan (Neila), Tiverton, N.S. and Alexander (Barb), Ashern, Manitoba; sisters, Agnes (William) Matheson and Alena (Allie) Hope, both of Iron Mines, Inverness County and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Donald and sisters, Alexis and Katherine and a sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Monday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church or St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh or to a charity of one’s choice.

Donald M. Forbes
83, Glace Bay
Donald M. Forbes, 83 of 10 Rochell St., Glace Bay, died at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Friday, May 26, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Archibald G. and Marguerite (Kennedy) Forbes.
He was a stationary engineer at the old Glace Bay General Hospital and retired in 1982 after 31 years of service. He was a member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (MacPherson); two daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Robert Bourassa), Oakville, Ont., Ruth (Mrs. Gordon Stevens), Brickyard Road, Mira; four grandchildren, Marc Bourassa, Carl Bourassa, Stephen Blackman and Craig Blackman; two sisters, Jean (Mrs. John MacNeil) and Anna (Mrs. S.J. MacNee), both of Glace Bay.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 30 at 2 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
