Sarah Ann (Sally) MacPhee
Glace Bay
Sarah Ann (Sally) MacPhee of 126 Cottage St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (MacNeil) MacKinnon. Mrs. MacPhee was a former member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
She is survived by sons, James, Glace Bay and Joseph, Stellarton; sisters, Theresa (Joseph) Nicholson, Dominion, Margaret (John) Hall, Halifax, Edith (Myles) Muise, Halifax, Trudy Butler, Welland, Ont., Mary Sorokowsky, Edmonton, Alta., Eileen (Alfred) Minecola, Orange, Calif.; brothers, Frank (Bessie) McKinnon, Glace Bay and Colin (Hazel) MacKinnon, British Columbia.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John, sister, Anne Gilbert, brothers, Ambrose, M.J. and James MacKinnon.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. MacPhee. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay with Fr. Cliff Bisson officiating. Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
Dan Murdock Morrison
91, Wreck Cove
Dan Murdock Morrison, 91, of Wreck Cove, died suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, May 26, 2000.
Born in Wreck Cove, he was the son of the late Angus L. and Katie (MacLeod) Morrison.
He was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Birch Plain. Dan Murdock was employed in farming, fishing and lumber business with his brother Donald who passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2000.
He is survived by sister, Sarah Ann (Sadie) Gillan, Sydney Mines; sister-in-law, Alice Morrison, Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Alexander (Sandy), sisters, Maisie, Tena and Jessie, a nephew, Donald Gillan.
Dan Murdock and Donald are both resting in Calvin Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 27, in Calvin Presbyterian with Shirley Murdock assisted by Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, or Calvin Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
Hilda Ann (Hearn) Vincent
75, Royal Oak, Mich.
Hilda Ann (Hearn) Vincent, 75, died in Royal Oak, Mich.
Born in Sydney, Hilda moved to Detroit following graduation from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in New Waterford.
She is survived by husband, Clarence; daughters, Trudy (Michael) Dunaway, Diane (Dr. Edward) Bok, Patricia (George) Evanoff, sons, John (Marilyn), Christopher (Elizabeth), 16 grandchildren, brother, James (Dorothy) Hearn, sisters, Olga (Carl) Simick, Marion (Don) Munro, all of Michigan, Clara (R.J.) MacDonald and sister-in-law, Lil Hearn, both of Sydney.
She was predeceased by brothers, Ronald (Chick) and William.
Funeral took place May 19, 2000, at Royal Oak, Mich.
Annie Margaret (Prince) Weir
82, Sydney Mines
Annie Margaret (Prince) Weir, 82, of 263 Pitt St., Sydney Mines, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born May 12, 1918, in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Prince and Caroline (Boutilier) Prince Eveleigh.
She was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines.
In her earlier years, she was employed as a cook for Don MacQuarrie’s Restaurant, the North Sydney Bowling Alley and the Army Barracks in Upper North Sydney. She was also employed at both fish plants in North Sydney.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley (Brendon) Noye, Pickering, Ont., Beverley Scullen and Marilyn, both of Sydney Mines; one son, John Francis (Winnie), Sydney Mines; three sisters, Eliza (Leonard) Pye, Agnes Deveaux, and Mary Evans, all of Sydney Mines; six brothers, Louis (Fannie) Prince, Bill Prince, John (Mrytle) Eveleigh, Albert (Theresa) Eveleigh and Alex (Janet) Eveleigh, all of Sydney Mines; and Roy Eveleigh; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John James (Jim) in 1992, two sons, Melvin and Darren, and two sons in infancy, brothers, Joseph Prince and Herbert Eveleigh and stepfather, Walter Eveleigh.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Weir will be held tonight (Saturday) 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held Monday 2 p.m. at Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Church in her memory or a charity of one’s choice.
She was a kind and generous person who touched our lives with her love and laughter. You will never be forgotten. We love you.
Christena Campbell
84, New Waterford
Christena Campbell, 84, of Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John Archie and Mary (MacFarlane) Gillis. She was a member of St. Agnes Parish, New Waterford. She was active with both the St. Agnes Sr. Altar Society and was past president of the CWL. She volunteered her services for many local associations particularly the United Appeal and Canadian Arthritis Society. She had been employed with Schwartz and Co., New Waterford, until her retirement.
Surviving are sons, Colin (Shannon), New Waterford, Samuel (Norma), Coxheath, and Lawrence (Rose), Yarmouth, sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Howell and Rose (Mrs. Florian Leblanc), Whitney Pier, Rita Hefferman, Sydney, and Sr. Grace Gillis, Mount St. Vincent Motherhouse, Halifax, brothers, Joseph A. (Eileen) Gillis, Antigonish, and Myles Gillis, New Waterford, grandchildren Drew, Stephanie, Cheryl, Shauna, Bill and Joseph, one great-grandchild and her extended family at Maple Hill Manor.
She was predeceased by her husband, Colin A. Campbell, sister, Sister Lydia Gillis S.C. and brothers, Alexander, Hugh and John Angus.
Visitation was held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Agnes Church Tuesday 11 a.m. Rev. Bob Neville officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Nova Scotia, Maple Hill Manor or to a charity of one’s choice.
Members of the KOC are requested to assemble at the funeral home tonight at 7:30 p.m. for a prayer service.
Lillian Mae Clarke
87, Glace Bay
Lillian Mae Clarke, 87, of 359 Brookside Street, Glace Bay, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, May 27, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Hebert and Agnes (White) Johnson.
Mrs. Clarke was a member of Newsom United Church. She was an avid bowler for many years, and was also a member of the church choir. Lillian was very active up until the past year.
Lillian is survived by her long-time companion Gerald Devison, one son Wayne (Colleen) Clarke, Dominion, four daughters, Mae (David) Aucoin, Port Caledonia, Lorna (Larry) Perrins, Hamilton, Ont., Theresa Clarke, Sydney, Rita (Lorne) Bennett, Alberta, a sister Mary Elkins, Sarnia, Ont., 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Lillian was predeceased by her husband Richard Clarke in 1980, sons Richard Jr. and Rayfield, a sister Blanche Pace, brothers, Herbert, William and Robert.
Visitation was held Sunday, May 28, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held today (Monday) at 2:30 p.m. in Newsom United Church, Glace Bay. lnterment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
