Joan Irene Davis
67, Truro
Joan Irene Davis, 67, of Truro, passed away peacefully Friday, May 26, 2000, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
Born in Mill Village, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Elva (Anthony) Seeton. She worked as a nursing assistant in her earlier years and was an active member of the Faith Baptist Church in Sydney until 1988 when her family moved to Truro. Held closest to her heart were her faith in God and the unconditional love for her family and friends.
She was a loving mother of two daughters, Rebecca (Craig) Richards, Elisabeth (Herman) Borden, all of Truro, a devoted grandmother to two grandchildren, Ty Borden and Kaitlyn Richards, both of Truro. She is also survived by sisters, Beryle Kamai-Seeton, Hawaii, Lola (Donald) MacLean, New Glasgow, Patricia (Bernie) Killen, Brookfield, brothers, Earle Seeton, Camden, Colchester Co., Clyde (Deborah) Seeton, Truro.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard.
Visitation was held from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Sunday, May 28. Funeral service today (Monday), 11 a.m., both in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Burial in the Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village. Family flowers only. Donations may be the to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
John Peter LeForte
90, Glace Bay
John Peter LeForte, 90, of 16 Smith St., Glace Bay, passed away Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Louise (Detcheverry) LeForte.
John was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish, Glace Bay. In his earlier years he was an avid runner and for his accomplishments in the sport his picture is in the Halifax Hall of Fame. He was employed with the Dominion Coal Co. as a miner and in his later years he was an official mine examiner until his retirement in 1969. John was also an avid gardener.
Mr. LeForte is survived by eight daughters, Rita (Mrs. Cyril White), Sault St. Marie, Jeanette Hewey, London, Ont., Millie (Mrs. Wayne Barro), Dartmouth, Patsy (Mrs. Pat Nolan), St. Peter’s, Joan (Mrs. Sandy Crocker), Port Morien, Gloria (Mrs. Ken Kilfoyle), New Market, Ont., Carol (Mrs. John Haley), Sarnia, Ont., and Shirley Anne (Mrs. Frank Boder), Winnipeg, Manitoba. Also surviving are three brothers, Paul, Charlie and Frankie and three sisters, Alice, Theresa and Margarite, 28 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Jean in 1995, five brothers, Angie, Eddie, Georgie, Ronald and Joseph and one sister Louise.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Parish, Glace Bay with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Diabetic Associations.
Walter Matthews
84, Glace Bay
Walter Matthews, 84, of South St., Glace Bay, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Thomas and Agnes (Strickland) Matthews. Walter worked for Marine Atlantic until his retirement in August, 1980. He also worked for many years as a janitor with Wilson United Church in Florence.
He is survived by one daughter Blanche MacAulay with whom he resided, four sons, Robert (Betty), Florence, Dave (Margie), Sydney Mines, Phillip (Judy), Florence and Gilbert (Kathy), North Sydney, two sisters, Rosella McGean, Sydney Mines and Ruth Grant, Bridgewater, N.S. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a large number of nieces and nephews including one very special niece Mary “Mame” Ward (Glozowski), Kitchener, Ont.
He is predeceased by his wife the former Gladys (Rose) Matthews, one son-in-law, John MacAulay and one son Eldon in infancy, also predeceased by 11 brothers and one sister.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in Wilson United Church. Date and time to be announced later.
Donations in Mr. Matthew’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or a charity of choice.

Arthur Ernest Peach
86, Mira Gut
Arthur Ernest Peach, 86, of Mira Gut passed away May 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late John Henry and Mary C. (Boutilier) Peach. He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien. Mr. Peach served in the Canadian Navy along with his four brothers. He worked as a carpenter and fisherman until 1955, when he and his family moved to the United States, where they lived for 25 years. He had been a resident of Mira Gut having retired there in 1975. He was a past master of the Mason Thistle Lodge No. 36, Port Morien.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Kathlyn (MacDonald) Peach of 58 years, a son A. Eric and his wife Ana, four grandchildren, Lois, Eric, Joshua and Raymond, and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Ezra, all of the United States, brothers, Howard, Port Morien, Robert of Taigh Na Mara, sister, Margaret Keefe of the United States.
He was predeceased by sisters, Helda MacRae and Mildred MacLeod, brothers, Wilfred, Johnnie, Jimmie and Harvey and four sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 30, from 3-5, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will he held Wednesday 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with the Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Palliative Care Society, Canadian Cancer Society or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
There will be a Mason Service 7 p.m. Tuesday at Patten Funeral Home.
Hazel Florence (MacDonald) Sheppard
91, Glace Bay
Hazel F. Sheppard, 91, of 269 Brookland St., Glace Bay, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born Dec. 16, 1908, in Fox Island, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Mary Jane (Clarke) MacDonald.
Hazel was a very faithful member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and a member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Club. She was an avid card player. Hazel was a kind and loving parent and grandparent who will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two sons, Carl (Charlotte), Keswick, N.B. and John “Jack” (Linda), Glace Bay, three daughters, Eva (Tom) Halder, Glace Bay, Dorothy (Bernard) Griffen, St. Catharine’s, Ont., and Deanna (Bob) Campbell, Glace Bay, two sisters, Gladys Thomas, Halifax, and Ida Warren, St. Catharine’s, Ont. Also two grandsons, 10 granddaughters and 24 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Richard (Dick) Sheppard in 1971 and a son William (Bill) in 1995, brothers, Norman and Ernest MacDonald and one sister Maude Vardy.
Visitation will be Monday, May 29, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Canon D.F. (Fev) Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Inez Wilhelmina Best
76, Halifax
Inez Wilhelmina Best, 76, of Halifax, N.S., formerly of Sydney and Toronto, passed away at the QEII Halifax Infirmary Site, Monday, May 29, 2000.
Born in Point Edward, Inez was a daughter of the late Richard and Susan (Rose) Rudderham.
She was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Point Edward and Club 55, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughter, Donna (Clinton) Hicks, Halifax; son, Ronald (Debbie), Toronto; brothers, Donald, Toronto, Douglas, Westmount and George, Point Edward; and grandchildren, Taylor and Shannon Hicks and Joshua and Nicholas Best.
Inez was predeceased by her first husband, Roland Best in 1989 and second husband, Alex Bonnar in 1999, sisters, Mildred MacInnis, Irene Penny and Helen Herald, brothers, Edward and Albert.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in St. John’s Anglican Church, Point Edward, Thursday, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Interment in St. John’s Cemetery, Point Edward.
