Allister Luman Gillis
73, New Glasgow
Allister Luman Gillis, 73, of the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow and formerly of 281 Willow Ave., New Glasgow, passed away Friday, May 26, 2000, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Skye Glen, Inverness County, he was a son of the late John R. and Annie (MacQuarrie) Gillis.
He was a long time employee of O’Farrell Chev Olds Ltd., from where he retired. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a member of the Trinity United Church, New Glasgow.
He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine (Kay) MacKay; daughter, Beverly Sondra Kronfli, Halifax; brothers, Ernest (Lena), Milton, Ont., Lawrence (Evelyn), Skye Glen; sisters, Nellie (Myles) Gillis, Skye Glen, Gladys (George) Munro, Whycocomagh, Mrs. Kay Mullins, Glace Bay. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Calvin in infancy and Ross.
At his request his remains have been cremated. A public memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the Trinity United Church, New Glasgow with the Rev. Norman Marple officiating; followed by burial of ashes in the Stewartdale Cemetery, Inverness County.
Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Fund or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
Evelyn (Gardiner) MacMullin
87, Sydney Mines
Evelyn (Gardiner) MacMullin, 87, of 31 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, died suddenly on Monday, May 29, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Effie (Bonnar) Gardiner.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her sons, Alex (Maurice), Danny (Lily), Andrew (Helen), John James (Barbara), Gerald, Kenneth (Mary), Wayne and Brian (Brenda); daughters, Delores (Barry) Jessome, Theresa (Eric) Walters, Rachael Bonnar, Mae MacMullin, Kaye Law, Ann Marie (Wayne) King and Lorraine (Vincent). Also surviving are her sisters, Kaye Finnigan and Rachel Denny; sister-in-law, Annabel Gardiner; 40 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel, son, George and two children in infancy, grandson, Gerard King, son-in-law, Vincent Bonnar, daughters-in-law, Margaret MacMullin and Beatrice, brothers, George, Clarence, Joe, Stanley and Andrew and her sister, Viola Fifoote.
Visitation Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral will take place Thursday, 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Hazel Florence (MacDonald) Sheppard
91, Glace Bay
Hazel F. Sheppard, 91, of 269 Brookland St., Glace Bay, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
She is survived by her daughter, Eva (Tom) Holder, Glace Bay, and 10 grandsons.
James Harold Redmond
81, Halifax
James Harold Redmond, 81, of Pepperell Street, Halifax, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, V.G. Site.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late James Robert and Esther (Dakin) Redmond.
During the Second World War he served with the Cape Breton Highlanders Reserve as an instructor. He was employed by Scotia Wholesaler’s and was co-owner with his brother of Argyle Grocery, Sydney. He worked many years for Ben’s Ltd. in Sydney and Halifax, retiring in 1984. He was active for many years in the Sydney Lion’s Club, holding a variety of offices including district governor.
Surviving are his loving daughter, Noreen (Barry) Maier, Mississauga; son, Brian (Pat), Halifax; grandchildren, Jay (Shannon) and Philip Redmond, Patrick, Robyn and Allyson Dooley and Kimberly Maier, Peter, Erin and Eileen Redmond; great-grandchild, Hunter Redmond.
He was predeceased by brothers, Ralph and Howard and sisters, Muriel Watt, Florence MacMillan, Viola MacLellan and Mabel in infancy.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association, Canadian Diabetic Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Joe A. Trudel
Sydney
Joseph Alfred Trudel, 74, of Sydney, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Felix and Winnifred (Boutilier) Trudel.
He served overseas during the Second World War and also during the Korean War. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by two brothers, Larder Fraser and Charles Fraser, three sisters, Camille Grant, Emeline, and Gertrude Aucoin.
The late Mr. Trudel will have visitation Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Effie Jean Laffin
69, Bras d'Or
Mrs. Effie Jean (Slade) Laffin, 69, of Little Bras d’Or and formerly of Carbonear, Nfld., died Monday, May 29, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Carbonear, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Margaret (Clarke) Slade.
She was an adherent of St. Andrew’s United Church, George’s River.
A wife and mother whose life’s ambition was her profound dedication to making her home and family one of everlasting love.
She is survived by husband, Melvin Patrick Laffin; four daughters, Judy (Carlie) LeBlanc, Florence, Carol Ann (Carl) Thurbide, Florence, Needy (Brian) LeBlanc, Bras d’Or, Tammy (Steven) Gray, Toronto; three sons, David (Audrey), Florence, Derrick (Linda), Alder Point, Billy (Yvonne), Toronto; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Cole, Newfoundland, Mrs. Unetha Dunn; brothers, Donald Slade, Newfoundland, Major Slade, North Sydney; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Melvin Jr. and daughter, Lillian in infancy, brothers, Nick, Bill, Jack and Bob and sisters, Earnestine, Anne and Sussane.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church, George’s River with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
