Gladys Rachel LeBlanc
89, Alder Point
Gladys Rachel LeBlanc, 89, Alder Point, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Alderwood Guest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Alder Point, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Ida (Devoe) Gracie.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Alder Point.
She is survived by her son, Cameron (Phyllis); daughters, Lillian (Francis) MacDonald, Greta Gardner (Elmer Gale), Loretta (Joe) Reashore, Gloria (Sheldon) Whyte; brothers, Charlie, Stanie, Joseph, Earl; sisters, Hazel and Helen, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, David and an infant daughter, brothers, Hubert, Vincent, James, Theodore, Harold and Billy, sisters, Mary, Ida, Adele, Lillian and Carlotta.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 1, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Funeral will take place Friday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Alder Point, Fr. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Julie MacDougall
53, Sydney
Julia MacDougall, 53, of 15 Glenwood St., Apt. 5, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.
Born at Sydney, she was a former resident of Halifax and Dartmouth for a number of years.
Surviving are common-law husband, Bill Peacock; a daughter, Tanya Lynn Peacock, London, Ont.; a stepdaughter, Anne-Marie, L’Ardoise; sister, Midge, Glace Bay; two brothers, Dougall and Jimmy; and five grandchildren.
Predeceased by several sisters.
The late Mrs. MacDougall will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Parkview Chapel. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Mary MacInnes
90, Breton Cove
Mary MacInnes, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born at Breton Cove, she was the daughter of the late Murdoch J. and Annie (MacDermid) MacInnes.
She spent most of her adult life living in the United States, where she was employed by Sears Roebuck Co., returning to Cape Breton in 1995.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Newton, Mass., and was active in the ladies auxiliary of that church. Mary was very devoted to her family and was dearly loved by them all.
She is survived by a brother, Allister MacInnes, Breton Cove; a sister, Ethel Bain, Big Bras d’Or; and several nieces and nephews,
She was predeceased by sisters, Christine Hayes and Katherine Morrison, brothers, John and Donald MacInnes.
No visitation by request. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at the St. Ann’s Bay United Church with Marjorie Serafinus officiating. Burial will be in MacDonald Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home or the St. Ann’s Bay Building Fund.

Albert Donald Oliver
Beaver Bank, N.S.
Albert Donald Oliver, of 8 Canavan Dr., Beaver Bank, N.S. passed away Thursday, May 18, 2000.
Born in Westville, N.S. in 1924, he was the son of the late Fraser Oliver and Bella Grey Oliver.
He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, bachelor of science in 1947 and graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College, with a bachelor of mining engineering in 1949. He was first employed as a mining engineer for the Dominion Coal Company in the Sydney Coal field and later at Magna Cove Barium Corp., Barium Mine, in Walton, N.S.
In 1961, Albert joined the federal government as a mining engineer and worked in the Yukon, N.W.T. and Ottawa. This work required travel throughout northern Canada, involving safety in mines, mineral evaluation and mine rescue assessment. During these years he established mine rescue teams for the two northern territories.
In 1980 he was appointed chief mining inspector for the Cape Breton Development Corp. and retired in 1988. By 1990, he was appointed chairman of the Coal Mine Safety Commission under the Canadian Labour Code, and retired from this position in 1998.
In 1997 Albert received “The Canadian Institute of Mining Members Award” in recognition of his lifetime dedication to mine safety, his work on the development of coal mining regulations and his efforts to introduce new technologies and equipment to coal mining.
Albert was a life-time member of the Nova Scotia Mining Society, the Yukon Chamber of Mines, the Engineer Society of Ontario and was a member of the Saint Andrew Society of New Glasgow, N.S.
Albert is survived by his wife, Edna (Gillis) Oliver; and three children, Helen Mary Green, Beaver Bank, N.S., Fraser Oliver, Yellowknife, N.W.T., and Keltie Martell, Porters Lake, N.S.; brother, Warren Oliver, Westville, N.S. There were eight beloved grandchildren Karly, Oliver, Bhreagh, Steven, Stewart, Cayliegh, Heather and Fraser Donald.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 20, 1 p.m. at the First Sackville Presbyterian Church, 60 Beaver Bank Rd., Lower Sackville, N.S.
Gladys Viola Penney (Roop)
82, Sydney
Gladys Viola Penney, 82, Sydney, N.S., passed away, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, May 30, 2000.
Born in Truro, Gladys was a daughter of the late Charles and Martha (Stewart) Roop.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 151, Ladies Auxiliary, East Bay.
Surviving are her daughters, Christie (Glen) Pederson, South Dakota, Martha (Basil) Hill, Sydney Forks; stepdaughter, Mary, Ontario; sons, John (Annette) MacLennan, Kingston, N.S., Joseph (Marion) Penney, Calgary; stepsons, Dennis and Walter, Ontario; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Gladys was predeceased by her first husband, John MacLennan and her second husband, Joe Penney, son, Michael Penney, stepson, John Penney, sisters, Ann Sheppard, stepsister, Julia MacIntyre and brother, Jack Roop.
Arrangements, which are incomplete at this time, are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Rose Dyson
96, Leigh Lancashire, England
Rose passed away at May Fair House, Eaton Hall, Leigh, on Friday, March 31, 2000.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Dyson.
Loving mom of Rita Finney, grandmother of Moya A. Marsh (Ted), great-grandmother of Paul and Adam.
Rose made a visit here several years ago and she will be missed by many.
Burial shall take place in England. There will be a memorial service for Rose at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church officiated by the Rev. Archdeacon Reg MacDonald, at a later date, to be announced.
