Clayton Leyte
76, Sydney
Clayton Leyte, 76, of Prince Street, Sydney, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Walter and Margaret (MacDonald) Leyte.
Clayton was retired from Marine Atlantic. He was a member of Branch 12 Legion, Club 55, the Club 55 rhythm band, and the Steel Workers and Pensioners Club. He was an avid bowler and dart player.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Lirette; sons, John (Marilyn) and George (Dale), Sydney; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Clayton is also survived by his brothers, Percy, North Sydney, Norman, California, Stan (Tiny), Ontario, Lloyd, Alberta and sisters, Willena (Tom) Phalen, Sydney, Marg (Bud) McInnis, North Sydney, Millie (Duke) Lindsey, Ontario and Ollie (Bud) Atkinson, Alberta.
He was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Walter, Harry, George, Alfred and sisters, Irene, Edie, Louise, Muriel, and Mary.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at First United Church, Monday 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or to a charity on one’s choice.
Adam Muir
67, Glace Bay
Adam Muir, 67, of 329 Phalen Road, Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the Glace Bay Heath Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Stark) Muir. Adam was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corporation.
Mr. Muir is survived by a sister, Alexandra “Sandra” (Mrs. Bruce Scott), Glace Bay; nieces, Earleen Aucoin and Krista Scott; nephews, David Bruce Scott (wife Noella) and Lee Scott.
Besides his parents, Adam was predeceased by a brother, Joseph and sister, Peggy.
Visitation for the late Mr. Muir will be held Sunday, 2-4 p.m. with funeral service at 4:30 p.m. both in V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home and Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with the Rev. David MacLean officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Adam’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Lillian Neville
90, Sydney
Lillian Neville, 90, formerly of Royal Court, Sydney, passed away, at the home of her daughter, Carol MacKay of Catherine Street, Sydney, on Thursday, March 30, 2000.
She attended Holy Redeemer Church. Lillian was an avid bowler and also a member of Club 55, and past president of the CWL, the Whitney Pier Seniors and St. Gerard’s Guild.
Lillian is survived by her daughters, Joan (Angus) Wilson, Sydney, Brenda (Roderick) MacMillan, Grand Valley, Ont., Carol (Donald) MacKay, Sydney, and Carmel (Harold) MacKinnon, Sydney; sons, John “Jackie” (Theresa), Cold Lake, Alta., and Maurice (Anne), Georgetown, Ont.; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carl and a son, Joey, in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church Monday 2 p.m. with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Frank Rowe Pike
53, Halifax
Frank Rowe Pike, 53, of Halifax, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Long Canal Lake, Halifax County.
He was born on July 3, 1946, in North Sydney and was the son of the late George and Gladys (Rowe) Pike.
He attended St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. He graduated from Thompson High School, North Sydney, St. Francis of Xavier University, Antigonish and Mount St. Vincent, Halifax. He was an Adult Education instructor with the Province of Nova Scotia. Frank was a founding member of the “Brunch Club,” Halifax and a member of the Club Ski “50.”
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Dey, New Jersey; uncle and aunt, Leslie and Helen Rowe, North Sydney; aunts, Jean Dawe and Louise MacDonald, Halifax; several cousins.
He will be missed by family and friends.
Cremation has taken place, under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. No visitation by request. Burial will be held at a later date.
No flowers please. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel, Halifax or the Ronald MacDonald Children’s Charities of Canada.
Mary Proctor
62, Sydney
Mary M. Granville Proctor, 82, 74 James St., Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully at her home of many years on Tuesday, March 28, 2000.
Born in Harbour Grace, Nfld., she was the elder daughter of the late Andrew and Agnes (Fowler) Granville.
She was a long-time member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Sydney. Mary graduated as a registered nurse in St. John’s, Nfld. She studied further at St. Martha’s, Antigonish, where she took more specialized nursing courses. A certificate in secretarial practice from the Cape Breton Business College was obtained by Mary at the age of 70 years. She will be dearly missed by her family.
Mary is survived by two sons, Michael (Joan) Proctor, Ottawa and Allan (Maria) Proctor, Milton, Ont.; one daughter, Christine (Lloyd) Proctor-Hahn, Sydney. Also surviving are her sister, Agnes (Eugene) Mouland, Gaylord, Mich.; and six grandchildren, Michael, Sean, Janna, Kimberly, Jackie and Natalie.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Allan in 1975 and three brothers, Mike, Larry and Leo.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Proctor will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Sunday, April 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, followed by a reception in the reception room on the second floor level of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Margaret (Higgins) Sophocleous
69, Sydney
Margaret (Higgins) Sophocleous, 69, of 358 Newlands Avenue, Sydney, N.S., passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 31, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Catherine (Murphy) Higgins of Reserve Mines. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney. Margaret was also a member of the Sydney Lioness Club, Branch 12 Royal Canadian Legion and the Old CNR Pensioners’ Bowling League. She volunteered her time to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Harry; two sons, Dino (Blanche), Ben Eoin, Andrew (Stacy), Bedford; three daughters, Dianna (Grant) MacDougall, Cornwall, Ont., Maria (Charlie), Sydney and Melina (Earl) MacLeod, Sydney; four brothers, William, Glace Bay, John (Nan), Detroit, Peter (Beth), Garvie (Joanne) both of Toronto; two sisters, Ellen (Ronald) Bird, Toronto, Annabelle Thomson, Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Josie Higgins, Glace Bay and a special sister, Isabell Musial, Glace Bay. She is also survived by numerous relatives, including five grandchildren.
Margaret was predeceased by a sister, Janet and four brothers, James, Andrew, Patrick and Alex.
Visitation will take place Sunday, April 2, 2000, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. MacGillivary Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mess will be held Monday, April 3 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating and Fr. Leo Boone concelebrating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery.
