Captain Michael A. Tobin
90, North Sydney
Captain Michael A. Tobin, 90, of 80 Archibald Avenue, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away at 6:14 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Born in Dunville, Newfoundland, October 26, 1909, Captain Tobin was the eldest of 10 children. He was the son of the late John Tobin and Julia (nee Glynn) Tobin. He was predeceased by his first wife Kathleen (Grant), his brother John (Jack) and his sisters Theresa (Reddigan), Carmel (O’Reilly), Mary (Mealey) and Louise (Kaufman).
He is survived by his wife Nora (nee Ryan), three sons, Michael (Elaine), Terry and David (of North Sydney), two brothers, James (of Dunville, Newfoundland) and Anthony (of Hamilton, Ontario), and two sisters, Rita Rosskoph (of Florida) and Maude Masurack (of California).
Captain Tobin was a master mariner and had a distinguished career of more than 50 years at sea. He first went to sea aboard a Norwegian whaler in 1927 under Captain Borgen. He then served aboard the Argyle, the Clyde and the Home (of the Reid Newfoundland Company) from 1928 to 1934. He sailed aboard the Glencoe from 1934 to 1940, earning his First Mate’s ticket in 1939. As a member of the Merchant Marine, he served in perilous conditions throughout the entire duration of the Second World War. He sailed on the Burgeo from 1940 to 1955, initially as First Mate under Captain Gullage from 1940 to 1946 and then as master from 1946 to 1955. Captain Tobin brought the William Carson, the first car ferry, to the Gulf and sailed her from 1955 to 1966. He then served as captain of the Leif Eriksson from 1966 to 1968 and finally as master of the Ambrose Shea from 1968 to 1974. He remained active after his retirement in 1975. He served as a navigator on the St. Lawrence River piloting ships to Montreal.
He sailed for six decades without an accident, including four decades as master. In recognition of his distinguished marine career, he received an honourary diploma from the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1983. Captain Tobin’s career was profiled in Harry Bruce’s ‘Lifeline’ (1977) and in Rannie Gillis’s ‘This is Not the Mainland’ (1999). His life story was also the subject of a feature article in a recent issue of “Cape Breton’s Magazine.”
In his retirement, Captain Tobin took up gardening with a passion and played golf until the age of 85. He was also an avid walker and reader. He had a lifelong interest in the history, language and culture of Newfoundland and this was reflected in the composition of his library. Known for his kindly demeanor and gentle smile, he will be sorely missed, fondly remembered and eternally loved by his family and friends.
Captain Tobin was rested at W.J. Dooley’s Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney, N.S., Sunday, April 2, 7-9 p.m. and will be resting today (Monday), April 3, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, North Sydney, N.S., with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Holy Cross Cemetery Fund.

James A. Boone
Sydney/Dominion
James A. Boone, 91, of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the guest home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Burke) Boone.
Jim was a former resident of Xavier Apartments in Sydney as well as a former resident of Cottage Avenue in Dominion.
He was very active in community and church affairs in Dominion. He served as a member of council and for 14 years was a provincial government appointee on the Dominion Board of School Commissioners. Jim served on the Board of Cape Breton County United Way of Giving and headed the Drive for Funds in Dominion. When the Catholic Charity Association functioned he served on the board and was also a warden at St. Eugene’s Parish, Dominion. Jim was also associated with the Dominion Credit Union Board. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Glace Bay Council. He also served on the 3rd degree team in Glace Bay. He joined the Dominion Fire Department in 1930 and at one time held the position of deputy chief. He was later made an honourary member of the fire department. Jim was employed for one year in the coal industry at No. 1 A Colliery. He was a very active businessman. In 1933 he opened Boone’s Bakery on Union Street. He continued the baking operation until 1949 when it was taken over for a few years by his brother Bill. Jim along with Buddy Grace established Boone and Grace Motors, a car dealership on Union Street, Glace Bay. Later he joined the sales staff of R.J. Logue Ltd. on Pitt and Prince streets, Sydney, and continued on with the firm now known as MacIntyre Chev Olds Ltd., Disco Street. He retired in 1978. He was an avid gardener. Jim loved Dominion and was very proud of the local history.
He is survived by three sons, Aubrey (Josephine) Boone, Halifax, Leonard (Kaye) Boone, Ottawa, and Rev. Leo Boone, St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney; three daughters, Ann (Bernard) MacIsaac, Ottawa, Alice Boone, Sydney, and Gladys (Garfield) Doherty, Dartmouth; sister-in-law, Kenzie Boone, Glace Bay, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Jim was predeceased by his wife, the former Olive Kuhn, five sisters, Bertha, Loretta, Alice, Margaret, Gladys, seven brothers, Ben, Joe, Stan, Thomas, Fabian, Adrian and William. He was also predeceased by his son, John.
Visitation will take place Wednesday 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Eugene’s Building Fund.
Members of the Glace Bay KOC Council are asked to meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for prayers.

Melvin Lawrence Burton
64, Sydney
Melvin Lawrence Burton, 64, Walter’s Lane, Sydney, passed away at his residence, on Tuesday, April 4, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Melvin was a son of the late Stanley and Elizabeth (Jeans) Burton.
He was a retired self-employed carpenter.
Melvin is survived by his companion, Rosie; daughters, Darlene Tucker, Anna (Darrell) Walters, Noel (Darren) Reid, and Tanya Burton, all of Sydney; son, Melvin, Sydney; sisters, Hilda Steele, Reserve, Edna Ponee, Coxheath, Marge MacLellan, Sydney, Eleanor Lee, Howie Center, Norma Wadden, Ontario and Phyllis Williston, Ontario; brother, Stanley (Zeila), Coxheath; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy, brother, Wallace and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

88, Grand River Falls
C. Margaret MacCuspic, 88, Grand River Falls, Richmond County, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Grand River Falls, Margaret was the daughter of the late Angus M. and Kate (Walker) Morrison. She was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Loch Lomond.
Margaret is survived by her nieces, Marion Peters and Peggy (Archie) MacLeod, both of Dartmouth; nephews, A.D. (Fema) Morrison, Cleveland, N.S., and Sandy (Judy) Morrison, Grand River Falls; several grandnieces and nephews and several great-grandnieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Neil and brothers, Murdock, Angus, and Malcolm.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and also, Calvin Presbyterian Church, Loch Lomond, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Friday 2 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in the Pioneer Cemetery, Loch Lomond.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Strait Richmond Hospital Palliative Care.

John Hector MacNeil
80, Michigan
John Hector MacNeil, 80, formerly of Christmas Island passed away on Monday, March 27, 2000.
He was the son of the late Allan J. and Mary Catherine MacNeil.
Beloved husband of Mary Isabelle (Mabel). Dear father of Mary Diana (Dr. Jack) Putman, Florida, Marian (Tom) Foote, Theresa (Terry) Adkins, Joanna (Mike) VonEper, Texas, John J. (Jill), Florida, Barbara (Erwin) Tonch, Bernice (Pete) Tegowski and Sharon (Rick) Harb. Brother of Anna Mae Murphy, Neil, Rhodena MacDonald, Josephine Garnier, Dolena MacDonald, Roy and the late Libby MacKinnon, Angus and John C. Grandfather of Christina and Colleen Putman, Sean, Shannon, and Kirsten Foote, Brian, Kevin and Mary Adkins, Lauren VonEper, Kerrie and Kaitlin MacNeil, Karen, Laura, David and Katherine Tonch.
Funeral mass was held at St. Clement Church, Dearborn, Mich., March 30, 2000.

Mary Martha Quinn
80, East Bay
Mary Martha Quinn, 80, of East Bay, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney she was the daughter of the late Danny and Sadie (MacPherson) MacIntyre of Sydney.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Mary loved her home life and will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna (Pat) Murphy, Northside East Bay, Sadie (Wayne) Chaisson, Sydney, and Ann Marie (Harold) Crawley, Northside East Bay; four sons, John, Sydney, Wayne (Bernadette), Sydney, Michael (Daveen), East Bay, and Billy (Anne Marie), Northside East Bay; four sisters, Theresa (Donald) MacArthur, Rita Taushaus, Suzie MacEachern and Catherine, all of Sydney; one brother, Johnnie (Catherine) MacIntyre, Sydney Forks. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Frank in 1987, a daughter, Ada, who died in infancy, two granddaughters, Lori-Lynn and Melanie Rose and one grandson, Frank, a sister, Peggy and a brother, Mickey.
The late Mrs. Quinn will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Francis Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, East Bay.
Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, East Bay.
