Annie Laurie Garland
85, Sydney
With great sadness we announce the passing of Annie Laurie Garland, 85, of 195 Hospital St., formerly of Styles Lane, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday, April 8, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Peddle and Evangeline (Kendall) Peddle.
She was a life-long member of Christ Church and a life-long member of the ACW Christ Church. She was also a former member of the Christ Church Sanctuary Guild and a devoted Sunday School Teacher.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband George A. Garland in 1968, brothers, Rueben and Stanley and sisters, Mary Fry, Pearl Dunn, Blanche Lynch and Evelyn MacMullin.
She is survived by sons, James (Delores), George (Helen), daughters, Mary (Bill MacKinnon), Rose (Ray Mortimer), of Sydney, and Barbara Lordly of Ottawa, and one sister Vivian MacLeod of Sydney. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton St. today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Christ Church, corner of Trinity Ave. and George St. on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Brown officiating. Burial in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Christ Church Memorial Fund, 52 Harold St., Sydney, B1P 3L9 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Donald A. King
83, Sydney Mines
It is with sincere sadness that we the family of Donald A. King announce his passing. He resided at 16 Yorke St., Sydney Mines and passed away at the Northside General Hospital, Saturday, Apr. 8, 2000.
He was born in Sydney Mines April 28, 1916, and was the son of Charles and Melina (Janes) King. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Don was a member of the North Sydney Seventh Day Adventist Church. During his working years he had been employed by the Dominion Coal Co. and later by Devco until his retirement in 1975. He owned and operated his own construction company for more than 15 years.
Don is survived by his wife the former Alice (Queenie Ashe) as well as two daughters, Donalda (the late Dorian) Billing, of Toronto, Ont. and Alyson (Sheldon) Jenkins of Sydney Mines, a granddaughter Shelley Ferne (Jenkins) (Brian) Carter and two great-grandchildren, Dorian and Marina Carter. He also has four step-grandchildren, Dorian Jr., Charmaine, Cameron and Blake and six step great-grandchildren, all of Toronto. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by seven brothers and five sisters.
Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home of Sydney Mines where he will be waked today (Monday), Apr. 10 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Tuesday, Apr. 11, at 2 p.m., conducted by Pastor John Lyons and Pastor Dan Wilson. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Michael James Lahey
73, Sydney
Michael James Lahey, 73, of 60 Rosewood Drive, Sydney, died after a courageous battle with cancer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Saturday, Apr. 8, 2000.
Born at Main-a-Dieu, he was the son of the late John Will Lahey and Anna MacLellan Lahey.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish and worked at Sysco for 45 years, retiring in 1988, and was an executive member of Local 1064, the United Steel Workers of America. He had served in the Royal Canadian Army-Signals Corps and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 138. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Steel Center Credit Union. He was an avid boater until recent years, and held the amateur radio call sign VEIBVA.
Beloved husband, father and brother, he is survived by his wife Cecilia (MacIsaac), daughters, Sharon Columbus (Jack), Sydney, Michele Lahey (Bill Gatward), Edmonton, Colleen Harris (Blake), Cole Harbour, Donna MacNeil (Glenn), Sydney, Cecila Marie Flynn (Kevin), Hamilton, Ont., sons, Gregory (Lynn), Stellarton, Michael Jr (Joan), Sydney, grandchildren, Erin, Lauren, Jeffrey Columbus, William, Sophie Gatward, Stephan, Robert Harris, Sara, Parker MacNeil, Melanie, Allison Lahey, Sherill, Colleen Lahey, Adam, Merrill, Maggie Flynn, sisters Katherine Clutsam, Nashville, Tenn., and Vera MacIsaac of Toronto.
He was predeceased by a brother in infancy.
Visitation will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
John (Dookie) MacDonald
63, Dominion
John (Dookie) MacDonald, 63, of Dominion, passed away Saturday, Apr. 8, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald. Dookie was a retired coal miner and also enjoyed bowling, darts and was an avid camper.
He is survived by companion Beatrice MacDonald, and daughter Cathy MacDonald (Bruce Burke), Glace Bay, sons, John (Laurie), Derrick (Pauleen), both of Dominion, David, Ontario, brothers, Bobby (Rosalie) and John, both of Glace Bay, sisters, Kathleen (Cecil) Currie, Rose (George) Smith, both of Dominion, Agnes (Kenneth) Pastuck, New Waterford, Cecilia (Peter) MacPherson, Ontario, Shirley (Dan) Chiasson, Reserve, Janice (Darrel) Mackie, Ann (Clary) MacDonald, both of Bridgeport and six grandchildren.
Dookie is predeceased by sisters, Melissa White, Thersa Cooke, and a brother Melvin.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Apr. 11, at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Hugh MacIntyre
75, Marion Bridge
Hugh MacIntyre, 75, of French Rd., formerly of Canoe Lake, died Sunday, Apr. 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Malcolm and Effie MacIntyre. He was a retired woodsman and a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #128, Whitney Pier. He was also a member of Zion United Church, Gabarus Lake.
He is survived by his wife the former Ann Marie (MacLellan), four sons, Donald, at home, Hughie (Cheryl), Hillside, Mira, John Peter, at home, Ronnie (Ann), Toronto, two daughters, Susan, at home, and Sally (Bill) Chase, Calgary, Alta., two sisters, Betty Mrazek, Sydney and Ethel Bernasky, Glace Bay. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Michael and Alicia.
Predeceased by one brother Albert.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Zion United Church, Gabarus Lake Wednesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral from Zion United Church Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lewis Crewe officiating. Burial in Zion Cemetery, Gabarus Lake.
Isabell Neil
88, Glace Bay
Isabelle Neil, 88, of 228 Wallace Rd., Glace Bay, died peacefully Saturday, Apr. 8, 2000, at home, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Jessie (Gillis) MacNeil. Isabelle was a member of St. John’s Church in Glace Bay. She was also a member of the CWL, St. John’s Parish.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean MacPhee (Jim), Sydney, and Lois Steele (Wayne), Halifax, two sons, Richard (Sheila), Glace Bay and David, at home, five sisters, Florence “Floss” MacNeil, Glace Bay, Kate Nagel, Ontario, Annie MacVarish, New Waterford, Gert MacNeil, Glace Bay, and Millie Hadland, Ontario. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Neil and five brothers, Mike, Simon, John G., Bernie, and Francis.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
