Clarence Patrick Perry
81, Little Lorraine
Clarence Patrick Perry, 81, of Little Lorraine, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2000 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Little Lorraine, he was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Dolan) Perry.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Main-a-Dieu and served with the Merchant Marines. He retired from the Fortress of Louisbourg in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Bernardine (Burke); seven sons, Rufus (Margaret), Louisbourg, Bernie (Roberta), Catalone, Gary (Heather), Catalone, Johnie (Glenys), Louisbourg, Clarence (Yvonne), Louisbourg, Tommy (Anne), Bateston, Blaine, at home. Also surviving are seven daughters, Theresa (Bob), Louisbourg, Patricia (Eddy), Catalone, Thelma (Teddy), Halifax, Judy, Louisbourg, Sheila (Eddy), Catalone, Elaine (Gary), Louisbourg and Doreen, Big Lorraine; a brother, Maurice, Little Lorraine, and by 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Rufus, Joseph, Jack and Thomas; four sisters, Margaret, Patricia, Barbara and Mary; and by a daughter, Patricia, in infancy.
Visitation for Mr. Perry was held Friday at Immaculate Conception Parish, Main-a-Dieu. Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu with the Rev. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, under the direction of W.A. Chant’s Funeral Home Louisbourg.
Edith Theresa Petrie
83, Sydney
Mrs. Edith (Eda) Theresa Petrie, 83, of Grand Lake Rd., Sydney, died Sunday, Apr. 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late James and Philomena (Martini) Antinello. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish and the CWL.
She is survived by three sons, Tony, Sydney, Jerry (Arleen), Sydney and John (Valda), Sydney, her sister, Bertha Doolan, Sydney, and five grandchildren, Laura, Christopher, Shauna, Paula and Johnathan.
She was predeceased by five sisters, Fanny Marmon, Mildred Ratchford, Theresa MacInnis, Violet Woodland, Emma Doolan and by brothers, Joe Antinello and Tony Antinello.
Visitation will be T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Augustine’s Church with Rev. Jim Atwood officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Joseph E. Boutilier
78, Florence
Joseph E. Boutilier, 78, of 25 King St., Florence, formerly of Alder Point, passed away peacefully Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of the late John and Isabean (O’Toole) Boutilier. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Parish, Florence. He was a veteran, serving overseas in the Second World War.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela (Davies), formerly of England; his sons, Raymond (Merle), Alder Point, Michael (Susan), Margaree, John (Heather), Cambridge, Ont., Brian (Noela), Guelph, Ont. and Martin, Toronto; his daughters, Carol (Murdoch) Matheson, St. Catharines, Ont., Sandra Gear, Mill Creek, Anne Marie (Dan) Powers, Sydney Mines, Joan (Paul) MacDonald, Scotch Lake and Carinia (Joe) MacLean, Point Aconi. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and his sister, Dorothy MacNeil, a resident of Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Catherine, brothers, Johnnie and Raymond and sisters, Eva, Evelyn, Mildred, Maggie and Mary.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will take place Wednesday, 10 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, Florence, with the Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society; Cape Breton Palliative Care or to St. Stephen’s Church, Florence.
Arrangements are under the direction of the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
John Charles (Jack) Brodie
89, Sydney
John Charles Brodie, 89, of William Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Guysborough, he was a son of the late Burton and Nellie (Clyke) Brodie.
Jack is survived by one daughter, Janette (William Sr.) Lucas, Sydney; three sisters, Bertha Pelley, Antigonish, Eliza (Ted) Drakes, Vancouver and Laura Clyke, Guysborough; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Bertie, Harry and one brother in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church, Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Archbishop Vincent Waterman officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Leo (Dan) Chiasson
90, Grand Etang, Inverness Co.
Leo (Dan) Chiasson, 90, of Grand Etang, Inverness County, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Community Health Center, Cheticamp.
Born in St. Joseph du Moine, he was the son of the late Dan Chiasson and Elise (Poirier) Chiasson.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. He worked in the coal mines in New Waterford for several years. He then worked at building bridges for the Department of Highways for 29 years almost province wide. He was a member of New Horizon Senior Citizens Club, St. Joseph du Moine and a member of KOC Council No. 3850, Cheticamp.
He is survived by two sons, Bernie (Elizabeth), Toronto, Eugene (Simone), Cheticamp; two daughters, Bertha (Mrs. Wilfred Doucet), Grand Etang, Germaine (Mrs. Aurel Fiset), Grand Etang; two brothers, Arthur (Lucy), New Waterford, Willie (Eleonore), St. Joseph du Moine; one stepbrother, Joseph (Yvonne), Waltham, Mass.; two sisters, Lucy (Daniel Gallant) and Roseanne Mason, both of New Waterford; one stepsister, Josephine Taylor, Welland, Ont.; grandchildren, Mark, Kevin, Glen, Tina, Brenda, and Sharlene and a great-grandson, Brendon.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Deveau, stepmother, Elizabeth (Lizza), two brothers, Alex, Johnnie, a stepbrother, Samuel, sister, Elizabeth and a stepsister, Marie Jeanne Charron.
Visitation is 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Cheticamp Funeral Home, today (Tuesday). Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. Cremation to follow. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, St. Joseph du Moine.

James (Francis) Mailman
52, Main-a-Dieu
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden death of Francis Mailman on Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short, courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Liscomb, Guysborough County, he was the son of the late Ellsworth Mailman and Ada Winnifred (Mailman) Mailman.
He was a member of MacMillan Memorial United Church, Catalone. He was self-employed as a lobster fisherman for 35 years. He served on the board of directors of the Main-a-Dieu Credit Union for 16 years and was secretary of the Main-a-Dieu Harbour Authority. His spare time was spent hunting and woodworking.
Beloved father, husband, brother and son, he is survived by his wife, Cathy (Kennedy) and son, Billy, at home; nine sisters, Hilda (Mrs. Gerald Rudolph), Kentville, Louise (Mrs. Melvin Baggs), Glace Bay, Dorothy MacKinnon, Glace Bay, Ivy (Mrs. Jim Wadden), Main-a-Dieu, Martha (Mrs. Eric Timmons), Main-a-Dieu, Sheila (Mrs. Daniel MacMillan), Rose (Mrs. Harry Glidhill), Ruth (Mrs. Terry Butts), all of Catalone, Gertie (Mrs. Walter Moore), Louisbourg; four brothers, Albert (Marilyn), Main-a-Dieu, Wilfred (Marilyn), Glace Bay, Lorence (Alice), Main-a-Dieu, Jeff (Joanne), Main-a-Dieu and sister-in-law, Edna Mailman. Also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by infant sisters, Ruth and Lucy and one brother, Harvey.
Visitation will take place today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish, Main-a-Dieu, with funeral services taking place Wednesday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at First United Church, Main Street, Louisbourg, with the Rev. Clayton Austin officiating, under the direction of W.A. Chant Funeral Home, Louisbourg. Interment in Loch End Cemetery.
