Edith Theresa Petrie
83, Sydney
Mrs. Edith (Eda) Theresa Petrie, 83, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late James and Philomena (Martini) Antinello. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish and the CWL.
She is survived by three sons, Tony, Sydney, Jerry (Arlene), Sydney and John (Velda), Sydney; her sister, Bertha Doolan, Sydney; and five grandchildren, Laura, Christopher, Shauna, Paula and Johnathan.
She was predeceased by her husband, John George in 1996, five sisters, Fanny Marmon, Mildred Ratchford, Theresa MacInnis, Violet Woodland, Emma Doolan and by brothers, Joe Antinello and Tony Antinello.
Visitation was held Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Augustine’s Church with Rev. Jim Atwood officiating.
Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Tony Victory
45, Howie Centre
Anthony Christopher Victory, 45, of Floral Heights, Howie Centre, formerly of the United Kingdom, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brave fight with cancer.
Born at Liverpool, England, he was the son of Clifford J. and Doris (Dunn) Victory, Howie Centre.
He was a member of the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union, Local 480 and held the position of chief cook for the last 10 years with the Cape Breton County Correctional Centre. Tony was an outstanding dedicated father, a loving son, a caring supportive brother and a giving uncle and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by two sons, Devin James and Arron Cameron, both at home; two sisters, Susan Baldwin (Gerard) and Donna Baker (Henry), both of Sydney; three brothers, Lawrence (Christine) and Cliff Jr., both of Sydney, Craig, Moncton, N.B.
The late Mr. Victory will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with the Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
James Lionel Corbett
44, New Waterford
James Lionel (Jimmy) Corbett, 44, of New Waterford, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2000.
He was the son of Harry and Lorna (McNeil) Corbett.
He is survived by four children, Jim Dan, Campbell River, B.C., Harry, Matthew and Kerrianne, New Waterford; sisters, Lynn (Sandy) Mclsaac, New Waterford, Karen (Phil) Sceviour, Lower Sackville; and brothers, John (Cathy), Campbell River, B.C. and Paul (Araksi), Calgary, Alta.
Jimmy was enrolled as a full-time student at UCCB and was an active member of AA, New Waterford Branch.
No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 13 at 10 a.m. at Saint Agnes Church with Fr. Robert Neville officiating. lnterment to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
Edward Emsley
79, Glace Bay
Edward Emsley, 79, of 7 Minto St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, April 11, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Toronto, he is survived by a grandson, Brian Mason, Glace Bay and a granddaughter, Debbie (Terry) Mestoruk, Downsview, Ont.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten’s Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Lawrence Alexander Gillis
79, Grand Mira North
Lawrence Alexander Angus Gillis, 79, of Grand Mira North, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Grand Mira North, he was the son of the late Martin D. and Catherine (Campbell) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish and a former member of St. Margaret’s Choir, the Cape Breton Gaelic Choir, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12. He worked for Municipal Ready Mix, the Department of Highways and at one time operated a family farm in Grand Mira. He served in the Second World War as a military policeman and was stationed in England, France, Belgium and Holland.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Charlotte Elizabeth Donovan; daughters, Shauna (Gerard) Landry, Sydney, Virginia (Doug) MacSween, Grand Mira, Vivian (Darryl) Peters, Trenton, Ont.; sons, Martin (Veronica), Sydney, Greg (Francis), Grand Mira, Howard (Sharon), Halifax; sisters, Claire (Mrs. Harry Murphy), East Bay, Florence (Mrs. Armond Presseau), Ontario; brother, Phonsie (Evelyn), Mount Denson, N.S. and 18 grandchildren.
Lawrence’s warm smile and gentle nature will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his son, Lawrence Hugh in 1971, brothers, John Alex, Allan, Bernard, Dan and Joseph, sisters, Annie, Mary Theresa, Sr. Josephine CND and Lucy Ellen in infancy.
Visitation will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira North with the Rev. Gerald Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Margaret’s Parish Cemetery Fund.
Robert Douglas Knox
44, New Waterford
Robert Douglas Knox, 50, of Sydney, died suddenly at the V.G. site of the QEII, Halifax.
Born in Rexton, N.B., he was the son of the Douglas and Euella (McFee) Knox.
He was the retail manager of Kmart, By Way and Invit Co-op on Baffin Island. He loved the outdoors and was an amateur mineral explorer and very community-minded.
Surviving besides his parents, are his former wife, Jeanette; daughter, Laurie, Sydney; son, Scott Robert, Winnipeg; brothers, Michael, Halifax, Steven, Burton, N.B., Ronald, Lower Sackville, Jeffery, Vancouver; sisters, Julia, Saint John, N.B., Betty, Fort McMurray, Alta. and their families.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Halifax Regional Crematorium. A memorial service will take place at a later date in Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
