C. Bruce MacDonald
51, Sydney Mines
Bruce MacDonald, age 51, a resident of Amber Drive, Sydney Mines, passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Clifford (Chip) MacDonald of Hunters Mountain, Victoria County and the late Evelyn (Feltmate) MacDonald.
After completing high school, Bruce attended St. Francis Xavier University, Sydney Campus for one year, followed by a two-year program at NSIT in Halifax, graduating with his medical laboratory technologist diploma. He was employed with the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney until retiring in 1985 due to illness.
Bruce was a member of the Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologists, he was a member of the board of directors of the N.S. and P.E.I. Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), and a former member of the North Sydney Kinsmen Club. Bruce will also be remembered as a talented musician, and drummer in several rock bands on the Northside over the years.
Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, the former Jane Rose; daughter, Stephanie (Moffat) Fraser, Thorold, Ont.; son, Christopher, Halifax; three grandchildren, Brandon, Meaghan and Christopher; two sisters, Judy MacDonald and Linda MacIver.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Memorial service will be held Thursday 3 p.m. from St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial of ashes in Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Dialysis Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital.
Roderick Ward MacLennan
63, South Bar
R. Ward MacLennan, 63, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was the son of the late Gladys and Rod MacLennan of South Bar.
Ward is survived by his wife, Louise (Cossitt); six children, Glenda Cornelson, Winnipeg, Shauna McElhinney (Ray), Sydney, Michelle Cordeiro (Paul), Sydney, Stephen MacLennan (Susan), Petawawa, Dana MacLennan, Berwick, Stephanie Riggs (Stephen), Vancouver; and special daughter, Laurenda Spears, Berwick. He is also survived by sisters, Elizabeth Tolan and Janet Weiland, both of Sydney, and eight grandchildren.
Ward MacLennan was a school bus driver for 23 years and a member of the South Bar Volunteer Fire Department.
He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held, under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel at Trinity United Church, Thursday, April 13, at 2 p.m., Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society or Palliative Care would be appreciated.
Henrietta Matthews
81, Sydney Mines
Henrietta Matthews, 81, of Sydney Mines passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret (Guy) Bonnar.
She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Ralston) Harrietha, North Sydney, with whom she resided and Gloria (Ronnie) Barns, Sydney Mines; her son, Lawrence, Sydney, and her special niece, Lorna (Lloyd) Tucker. Also surviving are her sisters, Lovie, Jennie, Missie and Lorraine; her brother, Lemmie Bonnar; and 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willard in 1992, her daughter, Gladys Haggett, her grandson, Calvin Harrietha, her sisters, Margaret and Jessie and her brother, Sylvie.
Visitation today (Wednesday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Thursday at 3 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines, the Rev. Brenda Drake MacDonald officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Robert Douglas Knox
44, New Waterford
Robert Douglas Knox, 50, of Sydney, died suddenly at the V.G. site of the QEII, Halifax.
Born in Rexton, N.B., he was the son of Douglas and Euella (McFee) Knox. He was the retail manager of Kmart, ByWay and Invit Co-op on Baffin Island. He loved the outdoors and was an amateur mineral explorer and very community minded.
Surviving besides his parents, are his former wife, Jeanette; daughter, Laurie, Sydney; son, Scott Robert, Winnipeg; brothers, Michael, Halifax, Steven, Burton, N.B., Ronald, Lower Sackville, Jeffery, Vancouver and Russell, New Waterford; sisters, Julia, Saint John, N.B., Betty, Fort McMurray, Alta., and their families.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Halifax Regional Crematorium. A memorial service will take place at a later date in Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Barbara Agnes MacIntosh
87, Port Morien
Barbara Agnes MacIntosh, 87, of Seaview Manor and formerly of 27 Birch Grove Road, Port Morien, died Wednesday, Apr. 12, 2000, at The Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Militia Point, Inverness Co., she was the daughter of the late Donald and Jessie (MacGregor) MacIntosh. She was active in the Church and community work until she became an invalid, after which she came to reside with her sister in Port Morien. She was a member of Malgawatch United Church.
Miss MacIntosh is survived by a sister Kenena Spencer and a brother George.
Predeceased by brothers, Rev. Rod, Alex, Rev. Paynter, and Kenneth.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Apr. 13, from 1-2 p.m. at which time the funeral will be held at Patten Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating.
The body of the late Miss MacIntosh will be transferred to Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh, for visitation on Friday, 1-2 p.m. where the service will take place in the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Aaron Billard officiating. Burial will be Malagawatch Cemetery.
Isobel MacPhee
85, Halifax
Isobel MacPhee, 85, formerly of Sydney, recently of Halifax, died at Northwood Centre, Halifax on April 12, 2000.
She was the youngest child of the late Daniel and Isabella (MacAskill) MacPhee, and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was born and educated in Sydney and was employed for many years as a bookkeeper at Wrights’ Home Furnishings where her sister, Jessie, also worked. Isobel was a devoted, life-long member of St. Andrew’s United Church where she was for many years an active member of UCW Unit 6. She was treasurer, for an extended period, of the “Junior Congregation” Sunday morning Sunday School classes. Isobel was an avid gardener, an accomplished painter and enjoyed knitting and other forms of needlework. She took great interest in her family, caring for her parents for many years with the loving help of sister, Jessie. Isobel was a kind, gentle, dignified lady who, perhaps because she never married, took a special interest in her nieces and nephews and their children.
She will be much missed and lovingly remembered by the Hills: Don (Vivian), Dartmouth; Laurie (Linda), Ottawa and Patricia (Wayne Jewers), Lunenburg, as well as the Ritceys: Jed (Betty), Truro; Isobel (Harold Cream), Truro, Joanne, Truro and brother-in-law, G.C. Ritcey, Truro. She has 18 grand nephews and nieces and one great-grand nephew.
She was predeceased by brother, Donald and sisters, Sara (Mrs. Gordon Hill), Jessie, Margaret, Mary (Mrs. Mayme Ritcey), Kathryn; brother-in-law, D. Gordon Hill and nephew, Kirk Ritcey.
A memorial service, Rev. Dale Irving officiating, will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.L. Mattattall Funeral Home with burial to be in the family plot in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
