Pearl Jermaine MacVicar
71, Glace Bay
Pearl Germaine MacVicar, 71, a resident of Taigh Na Mara and former resident of Beacon Street, Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Bridget (MacDonald) McNeil. Pearl was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was a former member of the Glace Bay Citizen’s Band Radio Club and the dart league in Glace Bay.
Mrs. MacVicar is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Darrel Nega), Glace Bay; daughter-in-law, Anita (Polegato) MacVicar, Dominion; sons, Daniel (Treena) and Kevin, all of Alberta; brother, Jerry “Toot” McNeil; sisters, Catherine MacDonald, Madeline (Mrs. James MacInnis), both of Glace Bay and Beatrice (Mrs. James MacDougall), Toronto; grandchildren, Melanie, Marla and Christopher. Also surviving are her extended family, the residents and staff of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Michael; son, Billy; brothers, Ambrose, Joseph (Patrick and Aloysius in infancy); sister, Dorothy (Mrs. William MacLeod).
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacVicar will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke’s United Cemetery, Donkin.
Donations in Pearl’s memory to Taigh Na Mara Bus Fund are suggested as expressions of sympathy.
Robert Francis Madore
62, Glace Bay
Robert Francis Madore, 62, of 12 Harrington St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Strickland) Madore. Robert was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. For years he drove transport trucks and he worked for several companies such as Hillman Transport, Seaboard and the RR Transport Company, Montreal. He was an avid dart player and he loved listening to music. Robert loved working around electronic equipment, he especially loved to fix televisions and radios.
He is survived by his former wife and special friend, Cecelia (Brazauckas) Madore, 201 Shaft St., Glace Bay; four daughters, Barbara Madore, Mary Ann Madore, Linda Madore and Christine Madore, all in Montreal; one brother, James, Guelph, Ont. and one sister, Annie Madore, Ontario. Robert was also survived by three half-sisters, Minnie Cameron, Glace Bay, Eva Strickland, Halifax and Annie Osborne, Nfld. and several grandchildren.
Visitation will take place today (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Robert, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Frances W. Peach
Port Morien
Frances W. Peach, 89, a resident of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, and formerly of Port Morien, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the manor.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Susan (Martel) Peach. She was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien.
Mrs. Peach is survived by daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Maurice Charlebois), Hazel McDonald and Linda Garland; son, Roger Peach, all of Ontario; brothers, George, Halifax, Melvin, Donkin, Joe and Leroy, Port Morien, Ted, Annapolis Valley; sister, Alice Fraser, Annapolis Valley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William; brothers, Gordon, Aulay and Turner; sisters, Sadie Tiller and Beatty Boutilier.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Peach. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with Rev’d Paul Findlay officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Anglican Cemetery, Black Brook.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Elizabeth Jane Strickland
100, Glace Bay
Elizabeth Jane Strickland, 100, of Seaview Manor and formerly Grant Street, Glace Bay, died at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex on Wednesday, Apr.12, 2000.
Born in Burnt Island, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Lavinia (Edwards) Keeping. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Strickland is survived by daughter Norma (Stanley) Peat, London, Ont., a son Robert, Guelph, Ont., also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Chesley and a daughter Irene.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, Apr. 14, at the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Glace Bay, at 2:30 p.m. with Richard Volkes officiating. lnterment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Gerald E. Travis
66, Sydney
Gerald E. Travis, 66, of 619 Keltic Dr., formerly of 480 Hills Rd., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Anne (Travis) Bradbury and the late Gideon Travis, Sydney. He was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Church, Whitney Pier. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces and was a member of the peacekeeping mission in Korea. He was a member of Branch 12 Legion, Sydney, and a member of the Polish Cultural Association.
He was co-owner and operator of Howard and Travis Trucking until his retirement in 1995. He operated Travis’ Christmas Tree Farm, Hills Road with his son, Jerry.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Peggy (Ryba); son, Jerry, daughter-in-law, Norma and two grandsons, Stephen and Paul; Peggy’s children, Edward (Donna), Wally (Barbara), Lynette, all of Sydney and by Laeora, Newfoundland and three grandsons, Patrick, Ryan and Nolan.
He is also survived by four brothers, Wally (Pat), Halifax, Donald (Elaine) and Wayne (Lucie), both of Ontario and Gideon (Lunda), Sydney. Surviving are six sisters, Violet (Ken) Butler, Halifax, Cora Sheppard, Betty (Doug) Ross, Lillian (Peter) Moroz, all of Sydney, Phyllis (Leonard) MacMullin and Ina (George) Thorne, both of Ontario; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Gladys (Howard); a brother, Max and a sister, Olive.
The late Mr. Travis will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Polish Church, Whitney Pier, 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Tadeusz Tusnak officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
John Charles (Jack) Brodie
89, Sydney
John Charles Brodie, 89, of William Street, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2000.
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Annie Lucy Bowden, Sydney and Gertrude May Clyke, Guysborough.
Alice Marie Chartrand
Chartrand, Alice Marie (nee Boivin) passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at the age of 67 years.
Predeceased by her parents, William Boivin and Laura Leduc; sisters, Edna and Lucille and brother, Stanley.
She is survived by her loving companion, Bill ten Heggeler; sisters, Rosemae, Jeaninie, Marie and Laura; brothers, Lester, Leo, Raymond, William, Roy and Lloyd; children, Lloyd (Valerie Arsenault), Bob, Lise and Suzanne (David) Lambert; grandchildren, Annie Claude, Katie Anne, Stephane, Jonathan, Mary Allison and Tabitha.
Alice was an active volunteer at the Port Theatre and was on the council at the Beacon Apartment Building at Cameron Island.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Cooperative Funeral Home, 222 Lasalle Blvd., Sudbury, Ont.
