Regis George
84, Sydney
Regis George, 84, a resident of George Street, Sydney died suddenly Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Yorke. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Hamilton, with whom she resided; one son, Eddie Murphy, Groves Point; six granddaughters, Danielle Hamilton, Sydney, Melissa Murphy, North Sydney, Elise Murphy, Ontario, Terri Ann Long, Sydney, Carrie Hamilton, Moncton and Kelly Spooney, Sydney Mines; two grandsons, Dwayne Hamilton and Paul Hamilton, both of Toronto. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Jennie Young, Josephine Yorke and Winnifred Yorke, all of North Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred George, in 1978, an infant son, Richard, brothers, Gus, Tony, Frank, Gordie, Bernie and Martin and sisters, Kay, Mary and Margie.
No visitation, by request. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of choice.
Sam MacNeil
84, Scotch Hill, Inverness Co.
The death of Sam MacNeil, 84, of Scotch Hill, Inverness County, occurred at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 13, 2000.
Born at Scotch Hill, Margaree Harbour, he was the son of the late John J. and Jessie (McDaniel) MacNeil.
He was a farmer until ill health forced him to retire. Sam will be greatly missed by his family and friends everywhere, especially in the Margaree, Sydney and New Waterford areas.
He is survived by one sister, Mary Coady, Margaree Forks; two brothers, James, Moncton, N.B. and Hugh (Shirley), Scotch Hill. Mr. MacNeil is also survived by 12 nieces and 10 nephews.
Mr. MacNeil was predeceased by one sister, Catherine LaRusic and two brothers, Malcolm and Hugh.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael’s Church, East Margaree, Monday, April 17, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Inverness Funeral Home.
Victor David James Morford
80, Donkin
Victor David James Morford, age 80, a resident of Donkin, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, after a valiant battle with cancer. His loving family was at his bedside.
Born in Folkestone, Kent, England, he was the son of the late Reuben and Amy (Bodger) Morford.
Victor joined the army as a member of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in June of 1940 and was overseas until 1945. Upon returning home he worked in the coal mines – Caledonia No. 20 and No. 26. After he retired in 1984 he volunteered for a short time as a cook at Loaves and Fishes in Sydney. He was a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Martin Lodge No. 101, IOOF and Queen Victoria Rebekah Lodge No. 63. Victor was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 5, Donkin, having served in several offices for many years. He was awarded the meritorious service medal in 1972.
Above all else, Victor enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking and baking, berry picking, and a good game of cards. Victor was a special “brother” to the War Brides and for the past number of years acted as “Father Christmas” at their annual Christmas party.
He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Rosalind (Childs) Morford; children, Linda (Eric) MacKay, Donkin, Jean (Richard) Gardiner, Glace Bay, Richard Morford, Donkin, Patricia (Vince) George, Stettler, Alta., Eileen (Harris) Martin and Derek (Michele) Morford, Donkin, Stephen Morford, Ottawa, Kent Morford, at home, and Glynis (Brent) Clarke, Donkin; sisters , Ruby (Stan) Hillis, Ollie Kelloway, Amy Slade, Mary Kelloway and Rosie Vaters; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Victor was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Iris and Gloria, as well as one sister, two brothers and one granddaughter in infancy.
At Victor’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church in Donkin with Rev. Margaret Collins, Rev. Pat Findlay and Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Private family committal will take place at Forest Haven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Alma Cornelia (Connie) O'Neill, RN
Eastern Passage
O’Neill, Alma Cornelia (Connie), RN – Oceanview Manor, Eastern Passage, formerly of Dartmouth and 120 Main St., Glace Bay, died Thursday, April 13, 2000.
Born June 3, 1911, at home in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late William Robert and Florence Matilda (MacSween) Roney.
She was a graduate of Glace Bay High School and worked briefly at the Metropolitan, Woolworth’s and Eaton’s stores in Glace Bay. She was a 1936 graduate of the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a general duty nurse in Hackensack, N.J. and the Glace Bay General Hospital. She completed training as an X-ray technician and headed the X-ray department of the Glace Bay General Hospital, working there until her marriage on July 28, 1945.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
She was an excellent wife, mother, homemaker, seamstress, neighbour and friend, as well she was a dedicated caregiver to her elderly friends and neighbours. She canvassed in her neighbourhood for several charities.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Goar; daughter, Margaret, son-in-law, Dr. Richard Haber, grandchildren, Julie and Jonathan, Toronto; son, Gerald (Jerry), daughter-in-law, Mary (Morley), grandchildren, Patrick, Maureen, Kevin and Colin, Dartmouth; sisters, Helen, Fontana, Calif.; niece, Connie (Roney) Fettes, Halifax; several other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters, Harriet Jean, Margaret, Elsie Doris and Lottie, brothers, John Milage, William Roy and Harold in infancy.
Visitation Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m., also Saturday 11 a.m.-12 noon, both in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, after which time the remains will be removed to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Brookside, Glace Bay for funeral services at 2 p.m., Rev. Eric Lynk and Rev. Doug Murphy officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney-Glace Bay Highway. Reception will be held in St. Paul’s church hall.

Ellen Sue Scott
71, Scotch Lake
Susan Ellen Scott, 71, of Scotch Lake, Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy illness.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Morrison) Audoux.
Sue had been employed as a housekeeper for several families in North Sydney over the years. She was member of St. Joseph Parish, Bras d’Or. She was an avid bowler and had bowled in a mixed league for many years, and had enjoyed her time with friends in a women’s club in Scotch Lake before she became ill.
She is survived by her companion, Alex Walker; son, Bill ‘Hub’ (Joanne), Canfield, Ont.; sister, Cecilia (Les) Toth, Welland, Ont.; brother, Lauchlin ‘Bud’ (Peggy) Audoux, Sydney Mines; four grandchildren, Locklyn (Bud), Tracy, Jeannie, Denise; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, David, Coady, Daniel, Billie; 12 nieces and nephews and three sisters-in-law, Patricia Billard, Helen Hodge and Eileen Winstanley.
She was predeceased by her husband, Shirley Scott, brothers, John and William Joseph and sister, Winnie.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will take place Saturday, 2 p.m. from St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial of ashes in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association, Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Cancer Society or any charity. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
Dennis Cormier
90, East Bay
Dennis John Cormier, 90, of East Bay, and formerly of 112 Welton St., Sydney, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born Dec. 25, 1909, in Friar’s Head, Inverness County, he was the son of the late John and Catherine Cormier.
Dennis was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. For 60 years he was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1588. He was a superintendent for J.W. Stephens Construction Ltd. in Sydney, having built numerous well-known landmarks throughout Cape Breton.
Dennis is survived by five sons, Francis “Chebot” (Miriam), Antigonish, Richard (Sandra), East Bay, Daniel (Linda), Los Angeles, Joseph “Babe” (Allyson), Howie Center, and Michael, Los Angeles; a sister, Lucy Ostrynski and five grandchildren, Craig, Sean, Trina, Francis and Ainsley.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Arthur and three sisters, Catherine Cormier, Mary Kelly, and Annie Poirier.
The late Mr. Cormier will have visitation Monday, April 17 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating.
Burial in the parish cemetery.
