Frankie James Mombourquette
83, L'Ardoise
Frank James (Frankie I) Mombourquette, 83, of L’Ardoise, N.S., died Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital.
Born in L’Ardoise, July 3, 1916, he was the son of the late Alex and Maggie (Barron) Mombourquette.
He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Parish and was very much involved in all aspects and roles of community life. He was a long time member of the parish council, an usher at church, a founding member of the Dr. Wm. B. Kingston Memorial Clinic, the L’Ardoise Men’s Club and Acadian Festival. He retired from driving the mail between St. Peter’s and L’Ardoise after 56 years of service. He had operated Frank’s Bus and Taxi service from 1943-1971. He was co-owner and operator of S and M Texaco Service Station from 1962-1967. On January 1, 1963, he started his own company “Frank’s Fuels.” His business motto was “Let’s Be Warm Friends,” a motto he always lived by.
He served as municipal councillor for District 15 (L’Ardoise) from 1952-1967 and as a member of the Richmond Municipal School Board during the same period of time. In 1992, on the occasion of the 125th Anniversary of Confederation, he was awarded the confederation medal for his dedicated service to the community. He was an ardent member of the Progressive Conservative Party.
Frank is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Kathleen Martell; daughters, Rose (Joe) Cooke, St. Peter’s, Patricia (Rene) Samson, Betty Anne (Emile) Boulet, both of L’Ardoise, Jeannette (Paul) Parry, Lower Sackville, Germaine (Robert) Gargan, Halifax; sons, Frankie (Florence MacMillan) and Gregory (Barbara Pilon), both of L’Ardoise. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, Pierre, Todd (Jennifer), Chad (Trish), Adam, Scott, David, Denny, Colleen (Kevin), Russell (Saskia), Karen (Darrell), Janelle, Laura, Jamie, Brent and two great-grandchildren, Aico and Julia. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Annie Mae.
He was predeceased in 1963 by his only brother, Charlie and two grandsons in infancy.
The remains will be resting at the L’Ardoise Funeral Home from 2-9 p.m. Sunday and Monday (April 16 and 17). Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18 from Holy Guardian Angels Church with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Cremation to follow.

Charlene Patricia Moore
45, Cole Harbour, N.S.
Charlene Patricia Moore, RN, 45, 59 Park Edge Crescent, Cole Harbour, N.S., passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2000, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in New Waterford on July 20, 1954, she was the daughter of Eileen and the late Charles Moore, 2815 Roaches Rd., New Waterford.
Charlene attended Dalhousie University and received her bachelor of science in psychology and her bachelor of science in nursing. She attended the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing. She was employed with Oakview Terrace as director of education, Quality Assurance and Infection Control. She also held a position with Bodi Metric Profiles in Dartmouth.
Surviving are her mother, Eileen Moore, RN; grandmother, Elizabeth O’Flaherty; brother, Bryan (Sharon), New Waterford; sisters, Eileen Shaw, RN (Hector), Coldbrook, N.S., Shauna Moore, Halifax, Karen Wyse (Reg), Bedford, and her long-time friend and relative, Christine Shaw, RN, with whom she resided. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews, Kara, Farrah, Ryan, Garett and Brea.
There will be no visitation at her request. Funeral mass, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, today (Saturday) at 2 p.m., Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, N.S.
John D. "Jack" Hayes
91, Glace Bay
John D. “Jack” Hayes, 91, of Melrose Ave., Glace Bay, died Sunday, Apr. 16, 2000, at Victoria Haven in Glace Bay, N.S., where he had been a resident for the past eight years.
Born in Glace Bay, son of the late William and Bridget (Walsh) Hayes. Jack worked for the Dominion Coal Company and later Devco for 43 years until his retirement on PRL in 1968 at age 60.
He is survived by three sons, Jimmy (Pearl), Dartmouth, N.S., Wayne (Lynda), Sydney, N.S., and Allister (Honey), Glace Bay, N.S., and a sister, Catherine (Mrs. George Gallant), Glace Bay, N.S. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his wife Floss in 1990, and by three brothers, William in infancy, Matt and James and four sisters, Mary, Veronica, Anne and Elizabeth.
The remains will rest at the V.J. MacGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, N.S., with visitation Tuesday, Apr. 18, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at Saint Anne Church, Main St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, Apr. 19, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney-Glace Bay Highway.
Martha Aliene MacDonald
Sydney
Martha Aliene MacDonald, a resident of the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, and formerly of 38 Brown St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, Apr. 13, 2000, at the guest home.
Born on Oct. 31, 1901 in Dominion, N.S., she was the eldest daughter of the late Duncan G. and Rebecca (Caldwell) MacDonald.
Martha graduated from Sydney Mines High School at age 16, and in September of 1924, enrolled in the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1927. She remained on the staff of the Montreal General Hospital and for a number of years served as Associate Director of Nursing. She retired in 1966 in order to return to the family home to care for her brothers and sisters. She entered the Cove Guest Home in Sydney in January of 1991. Martha was a former member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by one sister, Edna L. Rask of Ashford, Conn.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Clarence, Clyde, David, George and Andrew and five sisters, Ethel, Mildred, Rebecca, Gertrude and Janette Matheson of Fort St. John, B.C.
Visitation will be held in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cove Guest Home in Sydney.
Roderick G. "Doddie" MacMullin
Glace Bay
“Doddie” MacMullin, of 327 King Edward St., Glace Bay, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Facility.
Born Feb. 28, 1912, he was a son of the late George and Louise (MacDonald) MacMullin. He retired in 1977 from the electrical department of Devco. He devoted his life to the Cooperative and Credit Union Movements obtaining a Social Studies Diploma from St. Francis Xavier University. Some accomplishments include President of the N.S. Credit Union League, two terms as vice-president with the International Credit Union Movement, Board of Directors of CUNA Mutual International, and locally he served as president of the Glace Bay Central Credit Union and served on the Boards of the Glace Bay Credit Union and Coady Credit Union, Reserve Mines. A Community leader, Doddie was involved in the development and direction of such organizations as the MacDougall Girls Pipe Band, St. Anne’s Parish Council and St. Anne’s Camp. His special time in retirement was spent with family and friends in Margaree where you would always see him either working in the garden or just puttering.
Doddie is survived by his wife Deane, sons, Cyril (Arlene), Halifax, Starr (Agnes), Bedford, Shawn (Brenda), Glace Bay, and daughter Annadeane (Ron), Ottawa, and by grandchildren, Marc, Jaye, Matthew, Allan, Andrew and John, brother George (Tiny), Windsor, and sisters, Muriel Ryan, Passchendaele, Vera Caume, Moxie Oliver, both of Reserve Mines, Theresa Howard, Detroit, and Eileen Pohdy, Windsor. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers Cyril, George (Bub), Phonse and Gerald, sisters, Lucella Mackie and Kay Bryden.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday, 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Charles Edward McCormick
50, Englishtown
Charles Edward McCormick, 50, of Englishtown, died Sunday, Apr. 16, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Leonard and Theresa (MacDonald) McCormick. He was a Second Mate on the Canada Steamship Lines where he worked for 33 years.
He is survived by his first wife, the former Gail Hawkins, his children, Bonnie, Indian Brook, Karen and John, Sydney Mines, his common-law-wife Susan Rose, Englishtown, his step-children Patrick, Holly and Justin LeBlanc. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Stephanie, Ashlea, Shelby and Kristen, who loved him dearly, and his brothers, Joseph (Ann), St. Catharines, Lenny (Bertha), Brantford, Danny (Charlene), Thorold, Frank (Heather), London, Raymond (Linda), Dartmouth, Billy (Jessie), Howie Centre, Jimmy (Ann Marie), Sydney Mines, and his sisters Patricia (Floyd) Musgrave, Frenchvale, Mary McCormick, Sydney Mines, Lena Goodall, Brantford and Agnes (Terry) Jessome, Florence.
Charles will be remembered as an avid story teller. His love of music and singing will leave lasting memories for all who knew him.
Visitation Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
