Dwayne Michael Paul, 29, Waycobah First Nation, occurred Friday, April 14, 2000, in Waycobah.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of Michael John and Geraldine Cecilia (Googoo) Paul, Waycobah. He was a construction worker and a member of the Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah.
He is survived by his wife the former Tanya Gould, daughter, Tikisha Mary Jewel, at home, son, Kyle Michael James Julian, Waycobah, adopted son, Earl David Joseph Gould, at home, brothers, Michael John Jr. (Shannon), Jason Andrew, Harrison Grant Peter, all of Waycobah, nephews, Leon Paul and Michael Henry, niece, Vicky Elaine. He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Andrew and Annie Paul, maternal grandparents, Michael and Helen Googoo.
Visitation after 4 p.m. today at the family residence, 96 Subdivision Rd. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday from Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Sister Mary Irene Peck
87, Antigonish
Sister Mary Irene Peck, 87, a Sister of Saint Martha of Bethany, Motherhouse, died at Bethany on Sunday, Apr. 16, 2000.
Born in Whitney Pier, and baptized Loretta Teresa, she was the daughter of the late George Peck of Whitney Pier, and Catherine (Baldwin) Peck of Louisbourg, N.S.
Sister Irene entered the Sisters of Saint Martha in February 1935. She served the congregation in the pioneering field of homemaking in our convents in Dominion, Canso, and at Bethany in Antigonish, N.S., Blairmore and Banff, Alta., St. Martha’s Catholic Center, Boston, U.S.A., Kamloops, B.C., and the Cardinals Residence, Toronto, Ont. She served as receptionist for five years at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, and retired to Bethany in September of 1976. Sister Irene was community leader for seventeen years.
She is survived by three sisters, Genevieve (Jennie), Margaret Smith and Sr. Georgeanna, CSM, all of Antigonish, and two brothers, George, Antigonish, and Maurice, Westmount, N.S.
She is predeceased by six sisters, Blanche, Carrie, Cecilia, Dorothy, Florence, and Sr. Catherine Hugh, CSM, and three brothers, Clifton, John and Joseph.
The remains are resting at Bethany, where a Bible Vigil will be held on Monday, Apr. 17, at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under C.L. Curry Funeral Services Ltd., Antigonish.
Melvin James Russell Tutty
73, Glace Bay
Melvin Tutty, 73, of 30 Victory Road, Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, Apr. 15, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay he was the son of the late James and Phobe Jane (Samms) Tutty. Melvin was retired from the Steel Plant where he had been employed for 35 years. Melvin was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay.
Melvin is survived by sons, Melvin Jr. (Angela), Danny (Cindy), both of Glace Bay, one daughter Debora (Cyril) Hill, Reserve Mines, sisters, Doleena (Austin) Kiley, Shirley (Gerald) Bruffato, both of Glace Bay and Cora Anthony of Etobicoke, Ont., brothers, Jack (Alice) Tutty, Kenneth (Victoria) Tutty, both of Glace Bay, six grandchildren, Darryl and Dwaine Hill, Michael and Stephanie Tutty, Brandon and Brett Tutty and four great-grandchildren.
Melvin was predeceased by his wife Mary (Steel) Tutty, four children in infancy, sisters Anna Penny and Rita O’Keefe and a brother in infancy.
Melvin will always be remembered and sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday, Apr. 18, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Wednesday Apr. 19, at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Louis Royal (Roy) Bastien
86, Sydney
Louis Royal (Roy) Bastien, Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Xavier Apartments, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, April 17, 2000.
Born in Alymer, Quebec, Roy was a son of the late Louis and Agnes (Quinn) Bastien. Roy worked for Ferro Enamel, Oakville, Ont., retiring in 1979.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Ella (MacDonald); two stepdaughters, Patricia Johnston, Sydney Forks and Anna MacInnis, Derby Point. He is also survived by special nieces, Diane Hillinger, London, Ont., and Yvonne Rodwell, Burlington, Ont. and by several nieces, nephews, cousins and step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Lorette and Jermine, a brother, Ben and a stepdaughter, Marguerite MacKinnon.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial mass will be announced at a later date.
Thomas F. MacDonald
87, Glenville
Thomas F. MacDonald, 87, Glenville, formerly of Sydney Mines, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Born at Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late William B. and Lucy (Praught) MacDonald, Sydney Mines.
He was a member of Stella Maris Parish, Inverness. He was an avid horseman and had race horses in Canada and the U.S.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas for 3 1/2 years in Europe.
Surviving are his wife, the former Regis MacDonald; four sons, Glenn, Stevenson, Alabama, U.S.A., Lowell, Montague, P.E.I., Kirby, Paris, Ont. and Perry, Windsor, Ont.; one sister, Marjorie Biel, London, Ont. and one brother, Louis, Halifax, N.S.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Cynthia Walsh, two sisters, Frances and Mary, one brother, Joseph S.
The late Mr. Thomas F. MacDonald will rest at Inverness Funeral Home today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Stella Maris Church, Inverness with the Rev. Alex MacLellan officiating.
Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Stella Maris Cemetery Fund or to a charity of your choice.
Wilfred Fraser MacGillivary
80, Sydney Mines
Wilfred Fraser MacGillivary, 80, 50 Brown St., Sydney Mines, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Neil and Catherine (MacLean) MacGillivary.
He was a member of Carman United Church and was a retired Devco employee. He was a former member of the Northside Kinsmen Club and a past president of the Northside Hockey Association and an honourary member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8, Sydney Mines.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Verna Plant; his daughter, Dale (Mrs. Doug McLellan), Halifax and brother, George, Westmount.
He was predeceased by brothers, Danny, Ralph, Neil and Archie and sisters, Catherine and Christine.
There will be no visitation and a memorial service will be held Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in Carman United Church with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
