Ruth Anita MacLeod, RN
72, Glace Bay
Ruth MacLeod, RN, 72, of 118 Upper MacLean St., Glace Bay, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Winnifred (Paddock) Melbourne.
She was a graduate of Glace Bay High School and a graduate of the 1949 Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing. Ruth took a two-year post-grad study at the Halifax Infirmary and she worked at the Sydney City Hospital and Point Edward Hospital and from there she went to the Glace Bay General Hospital in 1960, where from 1960 to 1979 she was the OR supervisor and nursing supervisor until she retired. She was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Lawrence; son, Scott (Patsy), Glace Bay; sisters, Edna (Mrs. Charles Fraser), Glace Bay, Pearl Fortune, Glace Bay, Sylvia Anderson, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Scott Jr., Lyndon, Ronnie and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by a son, Stewart in infancy, sisters, Abbie Provoe, Emily Aspro and Ida Ferguson.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Thursday, April 20, 2000, at 2 p.m. in Epworth United Church, Glace Bay, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Marie Redmond

The death of Marie Redmond, 75, of 2 Kennedy Dr., Glace Bay, occurred at her home, Monday, April 17, 2000.
Visitation will be in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Further arrangements will be announced.
Melvin James Russell Tutty
73, Glace Bay
Melvin Tutty, 73, of Glace Bay, who passed away Saturday, April 15, 2000, was also predeceased by a sister, Olive MacIntosh.
Sharon Elizabeth Blanchard
42, East Bay
Sharon Blanchard, 42, of Portage, East Bay, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Campbell) MacKinnon.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. Sharon was employed at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney for the past 20 years. She was an avid tarabish player and enjoyed playing the bagpipes.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; one daughter, Shannon, at home; two sons, Danny and John Peter, both at home; three stepsons, Tom, Joey, both of Sydney and Robert, Coxheath; three brothers, Neil (Darlene), Sydney Forks, Donnie (Betty), Coxheath and Anthony (Debbie), Portage, East Bay and three step-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two step-grandchildren.
The late Mrs. Blanchard will have visitation today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Palliative Care, or The Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
John Charles (Jack) Brodie
89, Sydney
John Charles Brodie, 89, of William Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Guysborough, he was a son of the late Burton and Nellie (Clyke) Brodie.
Jack is survived by one daughter, Janette (William Sr.) Lucas, Sydney; three sisters, Bertha Pelley, Antigonish, Eliza (Ted) Drakes, Vancouver, and Laura Clyke, Guysborough; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Bertie, Harry and one brother in infancy and by two sisters, Ann Lucy Bowden and Gertrude May Clyke.
Cremation has taken place. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Frances Theresa MacDonald
76, Sydney
Frances MacDonald, 76, of 484 Prince St., Sydney, formerly of Shore Road, Whitney Pier, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2000, in Lakeridge Health Care, Oshawa, Ont.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lucy (Dalton) Bowman.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney, where she served as a former choir member and also as a Eucharistic minister. She worked for 22 years with the Department of Labour in the Provincial Building, Sydney. She was a member of the Sydney Co-Op, and was a former secretary with the Whitney Pier Historical Society.
Frances had a great love for Whitney Pier, its people and fond memories of growing up on Shore Road and Broadway. Also in her youth, she had fond memories as a student at Holy Redeemer Convent.
Surviving are two sons, Jude, Halifax, N.S. and John (Janice), Oshawa, Ont.; three sisters, Agnes (Malcolm) MacLean, Sydney, Mary MacInnis, Dartmouth and Lucy (Allan) Gillis, Sydney; two grandchildren, Luke Thaddeus and Anna Frances MacDonald, who were a great source of strength and enjoyment in Frances’ life.
Predeceased by two sisters, Anne Moffatt and Johanna Keliher, one brother, Edward and a brother in infancy.
The late Mrs. MacDonald will have visitation in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney, Thursday, 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2000 in St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. A. MacDougall officiating.
Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Whitney Pier Historical Society or the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
John Kenneth (Bud) Mallett, OSTK, CD
69, Lower Sackville
John Kenneth (Bud) Mallett, OSTJ, CD, 69, Lower Sackville, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2000, in the PalIiative Care Unit, Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre.
Born in Yarmouth, N.S., he was the son of the late John and Madeline (Muise) Mallett.
John retired from the Armed Forces as a laboratory technician with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1971, after 22 years of service, which included service in Korea and Germany.
Following his retirement from the Armed Forces he joined the staff of the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children as manager of sterile processing, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. He was an officer in the Order of St. John (St. John Ambulance), charter-member of the Oromocto and Dartmouth Lions Clubs, a member of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada, and a member of Branch 95, Royal Canadian Legion.
John loved spending time with his grandchildren and travelling with his family and friends. His other interests included golfing, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, the former Lilly Edwards, Sydney; daughter, Shawna McGovern and husband Jeffrey, Newport, N.S.; son, Stuart and companion, Josee Vaillancourt, Toronto; four granddaughters and one grandson. He is also survived by sisters, Mary (Mrs. Ernest Doucette) Yarmouth, Martha (Mrs. Charles Copeland), Bridgewater, Barbara, Beatrice (Mrs. Stanley Cottreau) and Margaret (Mrs. Doug Jackson), all of Yarmouth, Shirley (Mrs. Joe Welsh), Toronto, and Muriel (Mrs. Elton Hamaty), Wallaston, Mass.; one brother, George, Newmarket, England; many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother, Everette, Halifax, half-sister, Lillian (Ingemi), Brooklyn, N Y., and half-brothers, Donald and Leo, Massachusetts.
Cremation has taken place, with funeral arrangements under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Homes, Lower Sackville.
A memorial service will he held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in Knox United Church, Lower Sackville, Rev. Robert Chapman officiating, followed by interment at Oakridge Memorial Gardens.
A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Department, QEII Health Sciences Centre, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
