Nicholas Epifano
83, Glace Bay
Nicholas Epifano, 83, of 196 East James St., Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dominic and Carmella (Antonello) Epifano. He was a devout Christian and a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, where for many years he was an altar server. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant for 49 1/2 years, having worked in various departments. In later years, he was an operator on the Brown Bridge. He was also a member of the Sydney Pensioner’s Club. He was fond of boxing and in his youth took part in amateur boxing matches that were popular in the local area. He was a life-long resident of Whitney Pier.
Nicholas was the loving father and devoted husband for 62 years of Elizabeth (Walsh); three daughters, Mary (Ron) Grolman, North Bay, Ontario, Patricia (Martin) MacLellan, and Nicholette (Stan) MacLellan, both of Sydney; one son, Nicholas Joseph (Karen), Glace Bay, and a foster son, Archie (Linda) Walsh, Sydney; one sister, Florence, Hamilton, Ont.; three brothers, Joseph (Dora), Louie (Tilley) and Tony (Vera), all of Sydney; one aunt, Alva Pezzareallo; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by three sisters, Mary Epifano, Margaret Fernandes and Lucy Candelora; one brother, Peter Epifano in infancy.
The late Mr. Epifano will have visitation in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney, today (Monday), April 24, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care.
“Nicholas will be sadly missed and always remembered as a kind, compassionate and loving man, to mention but a few of his many fine attributes that will live on in those his life has touched.”
Elena Hooper
79, Reserve Mines/Donkin
Elena Hooper, 79, of 75 Rear Main St., Reserve Mines, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Luigi and Bertha (Young) Favaro. Elena was a former resident of Donkin. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Port Caledonia. Elena also attended St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn at home; four sons, Hibbert (Norma), with whom she resided in Reserve Mines, David (Mary), Reserve Mines, Kevin (Elizabeth), Donkin, and Tony (Bernadette), Edmonton; one brother, Leo (Doreen), Detroit; one sister, Georgina Arbuckle, Donkin; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Elena was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Hooper; two brothers, Basil and Anthony; five sisters, Marie Hooper, Louise Murphy, Isabelle MacDougall, Florence Howie and Bertha Favaro; one son, Bobby.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, 849-4505. A memorial service will take place today (Monday) at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy for Elena, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care.
Barbara Ellen Huntington
87, Marion Bridge
Barbara Ellen Huntington, 87, of Marion Bridge, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Marion Bridge.
Born at Cains Mountain, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Carmichael) MacKenzie.
She is survived by a sister, Mabel (Mrs. James Morrison), North Sydney; sons, Merrill (Viola), Halifax, Lyndon and Lowell (Helen), all of Marion Bridge; daughter, Lorna (Jack) Stuckless, Halifax; one daughter-in-law, Sharon, Halifax; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by husband, Frederick; son, Terry; sister, Jennie and three brothers, Angus Kenneth, Dan Murdoch and John.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Willis Henderson and Rev. Lewis Crewe officiating. Interment in Huntington Cemetery at which time the committal of her son Terry will also take place.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Judge Michael Leo McIntyre
Glace Bay
Judge Michael Leo McIntyre, who passed away Thursday, April 20, 2000, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Facility, was predeceased by faithful family friend, Margaret King. Leo was also a member of the John Bernard Croak Branch No. 3 Royal Canadian Legion.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay (today) Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Members of the Glace Bay Council of the KOC will assemble at the funeral home tonight at 7:30 p.m. for a prayer service. Legion members will form an honour guard and colour party as part of the funeral service. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday, 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with the Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Leo’s memory are suggested to the Taigh Na Mara Bus Fund, 974 Main St., Glace Bay, N.S., B1A 4Z8, or to a charity of choice.
Ronald Hughie "Rannie" O'Handley
70, Glace Bay
Ronald Hughie “Rannie” O’Handley, 70, of 3 First St., New Aberdeen, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Ronald and Mary (MacMullin) O’Handley.
He is survived by sisters, Marion, Ontario, Adeline (Douglas) MacIntyre, Veronica (George) MacPherson, Margaret MacNeil, all of Glace Bay. Rannie will also be sadly missed by Cletus and Mary Stanley, with whom he resided, and by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Archie, Johnny and Donnie; sisters, Christine, Gertrude and Mary.
Respecting his personal wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be arranged for a later date.

Dorothy Marguerite Cox
68, Sydney
Dorothy Marguerite Cox, 68, of 110 Moxham Dr., Sydney, passed away peacefully early Easter Monday, April 24, 2000, surrounded by her loving family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Clarice Burke.
Dorothy graduated from Holy Angels Convent and went to work with Household Finance in Sydney for 13 years, where she met her husband. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Dorothy was also an active member of St. Anthony Daniel’s CWL for a number of years.
Surviving are her loving husband of 40 years, Rod; two sons, Wayne (Michelle), North Carolina, Glenn (Karen), Sydney; three sisters, Mary Rooney, Westmount, Claire Crofton, Dartmouth, Yvonne MacKay, Sydney River; two grandchildren, Danae and Logan.
Predeceased by two sisters, Eileen and Rita and one brother, Fred.
The late Mrs. Cox will have visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Fr. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
