Donald John MacAskill
79, Gabarus
Donald John MacAskill, 79, Gabarus, passed away at his residence Monday, April 24, 2000.
Born in Forchu, Donald was the son of the late Malcolm Dan and Elizabeth (Morrison) MacAskill.
Donald was a veteran of the Second World War and an honourary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12. He was a retired lobster fisherman and a member of the Heather Masonic Lodge, Framboise.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Bernice; daughters, Linda (Kenny) Austin, Skye Glen and Elizabeth (Richard) Chandler, Whycocomagh; sons, Malcolm, Point Edward, Stewart, Victoria Bridge and John Angus, Gabarus and seven grandchildren.
Donald was predeceased by a grandson and by sisters, Mary Mae MacInnis and Sadie Cornet.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic Service held at 6:45 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Zion United Church, Thursday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lewis Crewe officiating. Interment in Zion Cemetery.

Helen (Nellie) MacEachern
Bridgeport
Helen (Nellie) MacEachern, of 1170 Main St., Bridgeport, passed away Monday, April 24, 2000, at her residence.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Delaney) Oliver.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
Mrs. MacEachern is survived by a daughter, Sheila Girolami, Toronto; sons, Billy (Judy) and Shane, both of Glace Bay; brother, Cecil (Helen), Berwick, N.S.; sisters, Mary King, Toronto, Charlotte (Mrs. Sheldon Metcalfe), Reserve Mines, Sr. Magdalen, Sisters of Charity, New York. Also surviving are six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Walter, brothers, John, Barty, Billy, Danny, Joe, Leo, sisters, Elizabeth and Rita.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. MacEachern. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Thursday 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Nellie’s memory to St. Joseph’s Parish Fund or charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

Duncan Thomas MacKinnon
St. Margaret's Village
Duncan Thomas MacKinnon, 16, of St. Margaret’s Village, Cape Breton, passed away in an automobile accident on the morning of Sunday, April 23, 2000.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the son of William A. and Mary Florence (MacKinnon) MacKinnon, St. Margaret’s Village.
Besides his mother, Mary Florence and father, Willie A., Duncan is also survived by sisters, Karen and Carbella (Jodi); brothers, Maynard (Mary Lynn), Floyd (Carman), Sherman (Deanna), Robert (Georgeina) and Neil; two nieces and nine nephews.
Duncan was a student attending Cabot High and was a member of the North of Smokey Wrestling Club. Duncan was a wrestler who competed with total dedication, heart and spirit and often came out on top.
He will be sadly and forever missed by family, friends (in particular, his best friend, Jimmy Lee) and all who ever crossed his path.
We love you, Molar!
The body will be resting at the home of Maynard MacKinnon, Sugar Loaf, from Wednesday at 2 p.m. until Thursday at 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Andrews United Church, St. Margaret Village with the Rev. Rose Hannah-Gaskin officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the North of Smokey Wrestling Club.
Arrangements under the direction of the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.

Margaret McKinnon
87, North Sydney
Margaret McKinnon, 87, a generous lady and mother to many, a resident of May Street, North Sydney, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Mabou, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Angus William and Mary Belle MacDonald.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, and in earlier years an active member of her community in many charitable ways and she enjoyed a weekly ladies card club.
She is survived by two daughters, Rodina (Mrs. Lloyd Rintoul), North Sydney and Philadelphia, Peggy (Mrs. John Bothwell), Calgary; one son, John (Lynn), North Sydney; one brother, Neil MacDonald (Robena), Victoria, B.C.; four grandchildren, Dr. Natalie Rintoul, Philadelphia, Liana Rintoul, Chicago, Earl and Neil Bothwell, both of Calgary; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Drake. Also by an extended family the Harris children, Edward, Gloria, Alena, Rodina and Nina.
She was predeceased by her husband, John McKinnon, brothers, Angus, John, Joseph, sisters, Mary and Kate.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Thursday 2 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church Improvement Fund or the Canadian Save the Children Fund.

Constance Margaret (Leonard) Pendergast
75, Glace Bay
Margaret Prendergast, 75, of 9 Burke’s Lane, Glace Bay, died Monday, April 24, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Zelma (Conway) Leonard.
Mrs. Prendergast was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay. She was a former employee of the British Canadian Co-op in Glace Bay in her earlier years. She retired from the Sydney Denture Clinic in the early 80s.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Zelma (Bo) Kibyuk and Barbara (Kevin) MacMullin, both of Glace Bay; five grandchildren, Connie, Shauna, Patricia, Janet and Kevin James. Also surviving are three sisters, Jean MacLean, Glace Bay, Murial MacKillop, Bridgeport, Eileen Cameron, Thunder Bay, currently at home and one brother, Thomas Leonard, Glendale, N.S., also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick and an infant son, William George, two brothers, Robert and Lloyd Leonard.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Thursday 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Black Brook.
Any memorials may be made to the Palliative Care in Margaret’s memory.
