Emma Gertrude Snyder (Lee)
73, Glace Bay
Emma Gertrude Snyder (Lee), 73, of 59 Drew St., Glace Bay, passed away Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (McInnis) Lee.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Page, daughter, Linda, two brothers, Alexander and James.
She is survived by sons, Robert (Delores), James (Deborah), both in Belleville, Ont., Bruce (Carrie), Orleans; brothers, Arthur (Doris), Glace Bay; sisters, Margaret MacKenzie, Nora (James) Jackson, Elizabeth MacLeod, Rachael Shaw and Charlene (Reggie) Egan, all of Glace Bay, Edna Christie, Fort Erie; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Joanne, Michael, Matthew, Emma and Jacob; great-grandchild, Clarissa. Emma will also be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.
Emma and her husband Page were longtime employees of the Department of National Defence and travelled extensively throughout the country, finally settling in Belleville, Ont. Emma returned and retired in her native Cape Breton, which she dearly loved.
At Emma’s request there will be no visitation. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, 11 a.m. in St. John The Baptist Church with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating.
A memorial service and interment will take place in Belleville, Ont., at a later date.
Donations in Emma’s memory are suggested to the Lupus Society.
Phillip Kemp Larade
51, Sampsonville
Philip Kemp Larade, 51, of Samsonville, Richmond County, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at home.
Born in Samsonville, he was the son of Theresa Landry (Larade) and the late Paul Larade.
He was a member of the IWEW Local 1852 and an employee of Georgia Pacific, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by his wife, the former Laura Sampson; son, Kempie (Elisha), St. Peter’s; daughter, Jolene and grandson, Dan, at home; his mother, Theresa; sisters, Charlena (Alfred) Sampson, Wanda (Michael) McGrath, Beverly, all of Samsonville, Pauline Deveaux, Zelma (Francis) Collet, Cheticamp, Patricia Larade (Joseph Martell), Rockdale and special ‘sons’ Norman Penny and Francis Martin.
He was predeceased by his father, Paul and a brother, Cecil.
The body is resting at the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s with visitation Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Rev. Francis Cameron officiating.
Family flowers only by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. W.B. Kingston Memorial Clinic, L’Ardoise, Strait-Richmond Hospital, Evanston or a charity of choice.
Clayton LeFrense
55, Sydney Mines/Isle Aux Morts.
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Clayton LeFrense announce his passing on Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 55 years.
He will be sadly missed by his loving family, two daughters, Barbara (Glen) Devereaux, Port aux Basques, Aretena (Rodney) Branton, Eastern Passage, N.S.; one son, Blair LeFrense (fiancee, Tracy Fudge), Enfield, N.S.; four grandchildren, Sarah, Jordan, Spencer, Jennifer; three brothers, Abbot (Anne), John (Edna), both of Isle Aux Morts, Randolph (Starla), Sydney Mines, N.S.; five sisters, Sue (George) Crane, Sydney, N.S., Doris Hayman, North Sydney, N.S., Betty Mauger, Port aux Basques, Una (Tom) Seymour, Mary Ann (Frank) Durnford, Isle Aux Morts, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth (Lillington) LeFrense, sister, Barbara, two brothers, Wendell and Hector.
Family and friends were received at Holy Spirit Anglican Church in Isle Aux Morts, Wednesday from where the funeral took place Thursday, April 20, 2000 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Hubert Vallis officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, flowers and/or donations may be made to the LeFrense family.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Port aux Basques.
Mary Margaret McKenzie
85, New Waterford
Mary Margaret (Magie) McKenzie, 85, of the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2000, in New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Mary Sarah (McLellan) Ryan.
She was a member of St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. She will be remembered as an avid baseball fan and a lady who loved bingo.
She is survived by two daughters, Cecilia (Mrs. Rudy Magilaro), Sydney River and Marcie (Mrs. Russell Chiasson), Glace Bay; 10 sons, Raymond (Annie Mae), Angie (Heather), Hughie (Mary), Duncan “Buller”, Murray, all of New Waterford, Jimmy, Toronto, Sandy (Brenda), Wayne (Sherry), Jerry (Mary) and Brucie, all of New Waterford; 34 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and a sister, Marie Campbell, New Waterford; two brothers, Jeremiah Ryan, New Waterford and Duncan MacEachern, Sydney Mines.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Wilson McKenzie and one daughter in infancy, two sisters, Cecilia and Mary, brother, John Hugh Ryan, grandson, Murray, granddaughter, Margie Magilaro-Racki, two grandchildren in infancy.
Visitation will be in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday from St. Agnes Church with Fr. Robert Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Gertrude (Mama) Sparling
86, Sydney
Gertrude (Mama) Sparling, 86, of 10 MacPherson Crescent, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, April 25, 2000, after a brief stay at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary Bridget O’Toole and William Wall.
She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1989 and her youngest daughter, Darlene, mother of Carl in 1972. Also predeceased by sisters, Veronica, Stella, Anne, Gladys (Toots); brothers, William, Michael and John and daughter-in-law, Pauline (McGillvary) Sparling.
Gertrude is survived by one sister, Mary Coffey, Maryland, USA and brother, Patrick Wall, Sydney. She was considered the eternal friend and great Matriarch of nine surviving children, George (Claire), Roland (Joan), River Bourgeois, Joan (Ronald) Donovan, Orleans, Ont., Colin (Diane), Korena (Ken), John (Mary), Greg (Shirley), Dolores (Steven) Fifield and Carol Ann (Steve).
She will be sadly missed by her 28 grandchildren, who preferred to call her “Mama”. Also survived by 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and God children; her very special friend, Mrs. Catherine McCormick, and daughters-in-law, Jeannette, mother to Roland’s children, Sally (MacGillvray) Sparling, mother of Colin’s children.
Mama had the innate ability to make each one of her grandchildren feel as if he or she was number one and for that they cherished her. Gertrude was very interested in politics and a similar interest was instilled in her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Branch 12, Royal Canadian Legion and was an Honoured Royal Lady of the Elks Lodge.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
May her great effort on earth, reward her in Heaven.
Robert W. Steele
63, North Redding
Robert W. Steele, 63, of North Reading, died Friday, April 21, 2000, in Tijuana, Mexico.
Born in Nova Scotia, educated in Cape Breton, Bob worked as a freight delivery driver with Carolina Freight Co. and was a member of Teamsters Local No. 25, Knights of Columbus No. 4544, Canadian American Club of Watertown and was an active fund-raiser for cystic fibrosis.
Beloved husband of S. Catherine (MacDonald). Father of David R. Steele, Cambridge, Debra A. Pfitzenmayer and her husband Kenneth, Pembroke, N.H. and Diane K. O’Leary and her husband William, Salem, N.H.; son of Amelia (Jerritt), Baddeck, N.S. and the late Roland Steele. Brother of Josephine Steele, Fairfield, C.T., Nelson Steele, Scarborough, Ont., James Steele, Norwalk, C.T., Gordon Steele, Sydney, N.S., and the late Elsie Mills. Grandfather of Kay Leigh S. and Jenna R. O’Leary. Robert is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 4-9 p.m. in Cota Funeral Home, 335 Park St., North Reading. Funeral: Thursday, April 27, 9 a.m. from the funeral home, mass in St. Theresa’s Church, 63 Winter St. (Rte. 62), North Reading at 10 a.m.
