Christina Effie MacKinnon
73, Aspy Bay
Mrs. Christina Effie MacKinnon, 73, of Aspy Bay, Victoria County, died peacefully at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour, Wednesday, April 26, 2000.
Born in Meat Cove, she was the daughter of the late Roderick and Cassie (Fraser) MacKinnon.
She was a member of Aspy Bay United Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Sadie Margaret (Maynard), Toronto, Alice Allin (Frank), Dingwall, Belinda Fraser, Dingwall, Rita Dermody, Sydney; three sons, Allister MacKinnon, Sydney, Henry David MacKinnon (Jackie), Dingwall, Douglas MacKinnon (Jessie), Pleasant Bay; stepdaughter, Atlantia MacKinnon (Simon Dan), Bay. St. Lawrence; six sisters, Hannah, Annie Jane, Katie Mae, Effie, Christy, Rosie and three brothers, Roy, John Roy and John A. Old Nanny will be sadly missed by her 22 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren, as well as everyone who knew and loved her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Allister (Sandy) MacKinnon, daughter, Carol Ann Dermody, sons, John Dan and John Leslie and three sons in infancy, Harold, Chester and Joseph, sister, Dolly Brown and brother, Wilson MacKinnon.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held Friday, 2 p.m. in the Aspy Bay United Church, Rev. Rose-Hannah Gaskin officiating assisted by Rev. Darleen Young. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in the Aspy Bay United Cemetery.
Brian David McCabe
53, South Bar
Brian McCabe, son of Florence and the late Jack McCabe, died on April 25, 2000, at home, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer.
An educator for 33 years, he was most recently the Director of the UCCB Institute for Education. Prior to this he held various teaching and administrative posts with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.
He served as president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and was first vice-president of the Canadian Teachers Federation. In addition, he held numerous community posts dealing with all aspects of teaching, and he especially enjoyed working with his graduate students to help challenge them to the truth.
A strong believer in giving back to the community, Brian was recognized for his community service when he received the United Way Ann Terry Award for volunteerism. He served for 10 years on the Board of Island Alternative Measures including Board chair. He served on the Board of Cancer Care Nova Scotia including its Planning and Priorities Committee. A lector in his parish of St. Alphonsus, he made contributions there, whenever asked. Since 1992 he served as a Nova Scotia Justice of the Peace.
Besides his father, Brian was predeceased by his wife Georgina (Dingwall) and a brother, Derek.
He is survived by his mother, Florence McCabe, daughter Natalie (Halifax); sons, Scott and Patrick (Sydney); granddaughter, Faith-Lynn (Sydney); brothers, Gary (Shirley), Newport, N.S.; Shaun (Beverly), Sydney; Thom (Anita), Ottawa; Dana (Cheryl), New Waterford; sisters, Heather Sampson, South Bar; Denyse Landry, Thornhill, Ont.; Wendy (Stan) Cheung, Ajax, Ont.; Janine (John) Tubrett, Sydney, Leanne, Oshawa, Ont.
No viewing by request. The body has been cremated. The funeral liturgy will be held on April 27, 2000, at 4 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church, Victoria Mines, with Fr. Paul McGillvray officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Alphonsus Memorial Fund or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Centre would be appreciated.

Delores Victoria Nearing
63, Glace Bay
Dolores Victoria Nearing, 63, of 7 Carroll St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Louisbourg, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Dorothy (MacNeil) Baker.
Mrs. Nearing was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was a member of the Sergeant’s Mess, Glace Bay. Dolores was a former employee of Woolworth’s, Toby’s and Ein’s and Pharmasave, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Nearing is survived by her husband, Russell; daughters, Lynda Joyce (Mrs. Arthur “Teddy” King), Glace Bay, Patricia Nearing, at home; sons, Russell Jr. (Florence Rowe), Glace Bay and Leonard Joseph (Sherri), Edmonton; brothers, Albert Baker, California, Michael Baker, Montreal; sister, Dalphina Ranson, Louisbourg; grandchildren, Dana and Christopher King; step-grandchildren, Kevin David and Ashley Edwards. Also surviving are special friends, Verna Matheson, Rosella Billard and Clarence and Kay Sampson.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Nearing will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 1:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Donations in Dolores’ memory to the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Rita Emma Peddle
88, New Victoria
Rita Emma Peddle, 88, of 149 Daley Rd., New Victoria, Cape Breton, formerly of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Sarah (Phillips) Boutilier.
Mrs. Peddle was a member of the Jehovah Witness Congregation.
Surviving are her daughter with whom resided, Faye DeBow; son, Lloyd, Bridgewater; sister, Mildred (Mrs. Raymond Hill), New Victoria; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Henry, four brothers, John, Gordon, Clayton and Wilson, sister, Dorothy Hartigan and sisters, Milley and Minnie, who died in infancy.
Visitation will be held Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Stanley Pink
73, Catalone
Stanley Pink, 73, of Catalone, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Cape La Hune, Nfld., he was the eldest son of the late Hugh and Fannie (Lafosse) Pink.
He fished his own boat, the Ann Elizabeth for many years, later becoming a supervisor at National Sea Products, Louisbourg. He spent most of his life in Cape Breton, first in Louisbourg, then in Catalone, where he retired in 1990. He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church. He was also a member of the Orange Lodge Benevolent Society.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nora (Keeping); three sons, David (Martha), New Boston Road, Stanley (Karen), Louisbourg, Conrad (Laura), Howie Centre; six grandchildren, Annie, Mary Lynn, Matthew, David, Lacey and Lindsay; two great-grandchildren, Jason and Alexandra; four brothers, Frank (Rose), Tom (Blanche), Archie (Eileen), Calvin (Jane), all of Newfoundland; six sisters, Jane, Louisbourg, Margaret (Clyde), Rosie (Gerald), Annie (Cyril), Millie (Les) and Loretta, all of Newfoundland. Also many nieces and nephews and in-laws that loved him like a brother and friend.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Germaine.
Visitation will take place at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Louisbourg, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Funeral services will take place Friday, 2 p.m. from St. Bartholomew’s Church, Rev. Paul Finley officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the W.A. Chant Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Robert Smith
86, Sydney
Robert Sheach Beveridge Smith, 86, of Payne Street, Sydney, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 25, 2000.
Born in Bathgate, Scotland, on Oct. 16, 1913, he was the son of the late David and Mary (Smith) Smith.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by his twin sisters, Margaret (Goodie) and Elizabeth, Helen, brothers, Richard and Dave. He was also predeceased by his first wife, and mother of his children, Ellen (Burke) and second wife, Harriett (Benway), son-in-law, John Beaton and granddaughter, Melinda Marie Birmingham.
Bob is survived by three daughters, Mary Alice “Posey” (Joe) MacKinnon, Whitney Pier, Helen “Bunty” Chartier, Kitchener, Ont., Phemie (Floyd) Birmingham, Kitchener, Ont.; eight grandchildren, Heather (Ross) Digou, Brian (Sheila) McKinnon, Diane (Derrick) Erickson, CBRM, Bob (Diane) Beaton, Francis (Dawn) Beaton, B.C., Kenny Beaton, Malcie Beaton and Craig Birmingham, Kitchener, Ont.; 12 great-grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Digou, Brittany and Skylar Erickson, Morgan, Liam and Laughlan McKinnon, CBRM, Eric Beaton, Kitchener, Ont., Hunter, MacKenzie and Courtney Beaton, Tyler Beaton, B.C.
As a young man, Bob was employed in No. 12 Colliery until joining the army, serving in the Second World War as a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders and serving again in the early 50s in the Korean Conflict (with the Princess Pats). He was employed as a salesman for various firms including Schwartz and Co., New Waterford. He owned and operated a general store in South Bar and then later in Scotchtown. He was a former chief of the Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Dept. He moved to Kitchener, Ont. in 1965 and worked with the Waterloo District School Board. He retired 20 years ago and after suffering a stroke in 1992, he returned to Cape Breton taking up residence with his daughter Posey. He was a member of the United Church of Canada and at one time was a member of the King Edward Lodge 108, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. An avid reader his favourite author was Bobby Burns. Bob’s life motto was “It’s better to wear out than to rust out.”
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
