Angus Samuel Johnson
67, Glace Bay
Angus Samuel Johnson, 67, of 159 South St., Glace Bay, died suddenly at home on Friday, March 24, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Margaret (Peggy) Johnson and the late Murdock Johnson.
Angus was retired, having worked for the Dominion Coal Company then Dupont Canada in Kingston, Ont., and Atomic Energy Canada, Heavy Water Plant, Glace Bay. Angus was an active participant in church organizations and served in several capacities at Newsom United Church. At the time of his death he was a church Elder. He was past master, Maple Leaf Lodge No. 88, New Waterford, and also a member of the Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, the Isle Royal Chapter of Rose Croix and the Nova Scotia Sovereign Consistory 32 degrees.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (MacAulay); son, Loren; sisters, Margaret Archibald, Halifax, Joan Marchand, Sydney and Kay (Dick) Rudback, Halifax; and several nieces and nephews.
Angus will be long remembered by his family and friends for his compassion, good nature, kind heart, sense of humour and work ethic.
Visitation was held Monday from 7-9 p.m. and and will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at Newsom United Church, Glace Bay, Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens following the church service.
A Masonic Service was held Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home.

John Walter Kane
78, Glace Bay
John Walter Kane, 78, of Glace Bay, formerly of Reserve Mines, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Bridget (Fennel) Kane.
John was a supervisor of the maintenance department with Victoria Park upon his retirement in 1977. John was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of John Bernard Croak Branch No. 3 Royal Canadian Legion, Glace Bay, and was also a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. John was a decorated Second World War veteran and was wounded in combat when serving in Italy.
John is survived by daughters, Betty Johnson, Glace Bay, Coreen (Gord) Tapp, Oshawa, Ont.; sons, John Jr. (Glorice), Bowmanville, Ont. and Barry, Calgary, Alta.; brother, Sam, Glace Bay; and sister, Gertrude Jessome, Glace Bay. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lisa (Tom) Pennington, Ont., Scott and Jason Giovannetti, Brampton, Ont., special nephew, Al and wife Theresa Gallant.
John is predeceased by his wife, Mary Evelyn (Gallant) Kane.
Visitation for the late Mr. Kane was held from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donation’s may be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation.
Mary Christina (Tootsie) (Gillis) MacCormack
82, Sydney
Mary Christina (Tootsie) (Gillis) MacCormack with family at her side, died peacefully after a brief illness, Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Her passing is a great sadness and family and friends will dearly miss her.
Born in Glace Bay to Joseph and Sarah (MacDougall) Gillis, she later married Colin A. MacCormack and lived on Matilda Street in Whitney Pier for over 50 years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, Whitney Pier. Strong in spirit and quick in wit, she was the central figure of a large, devoted family.
She is survived by her children, Colleen (Vince) MacNeil, Bras d’Or, Elaine (George) Schmid, Mississauga, Ont., Delores (Frank) Starzomski, Sydney, Heather (Steve) Fraser, Ben Eoin, Lisa (Dave) Raitt, Toronto, Ont. and Daniel (Cathy) MacCormack, Halifax; daughter-in-law, Janice (Colin) MacCormack, Sydney; brother, Roderick Gillis, Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Jenny (Alec) MacEachern, Sydney, Sally Gillis, St. Peter’s and Sr. Theresa Gillis, CND, Montreal. She is also survived by grandchildren, Cindy, Jim, Brian, Mary Beth, Maureen, George, Cora Lee, Krista Ann, Tanya, Amanda, Darren and Jeffrey and by great-grandchildren, Hayley, Brennan, Kate, Megan, Kaitlyn, Matthew and Nikolas.
Her husband, son, Colin G. MacCormack and sisters, Annie (Joseph) O’Neil, Florence (Babe) Aucoin, Peggy Gillis and Mary Mackenzie, predeceased her.
Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
The funeral will be held at St. Mary’s Polish Church, Whitney Pier, Wednesday, March 29 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Mrs. MacCormack’s name to the MacGillivray Guest Home Memorial Fund, in remembrance of her brief but happy residence.
Neil A. MacDonald
49, Sydney
We’ve lost a dear brother, loving uncle, and very close friend.
Neil A. MacDonald, 49, of Alexandra Street, Sydney, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, March 25, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Normanda (MacSween) MacDonald.
He was employed at Sydney Steel Corp. with the Railway Dept. Neil was an avid Boston Bruins fan. He coached Cape Breton County Minor Hockey for several years and was active with the Cardinals Fastball Team in the Glace Bay and District Fastball League.
Neil is survived by his sister, Catherine (Ronald) Muller, Sydney; brother, Ambrose (Dolena), North River. He was a devoted uncle to his niece, Rose Ellen MacDonald, Halifax; four nephews, Delton MacDonald, Sydney, Jimmy MacDonald, Halifax, Ronnie and Trevor Muller, both of Sydney; his two grand-nieces and two grand-nephews.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Tuesday) 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Wednesday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Stewart officiating. Interment in Sandfield Cemetery.
William Young MacDonald
55, Port Hawkesbury/Irish Cove
William Young MacDonald, 55, of Port Hawkesbury and Irish Vale, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., he was the son of the late John F. (Philip) and Anne Jane (Cash) MacDonald, Irish Vale.
He was a graduate of Johnstown Academy, Xavier Junior College and St. Francis Xavier University. He was a teacher for 32 years in the Port Hawkesbury school system, having served 20 of those as principal of Centennial Elementary. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury, where he volunteered much of his time as Eucharistic minister, lector, religious education teacher and a member of the parish council.
Bill was strong in his belief of the co-operative movement, having served on the board of directors of the Strait Co-op and Strait Area Credit Union for many years. He was a member of the N.S. Teacher’s Union in which he was extremely active having served in all executive positions in the Inverness South District as well as serving on various committees on the provincial level.
Bill received great pleasure in serving on the board of directors of the Cape Breton Children’s Aid Society where he was the chairman of the first Cash Crusade for Kids and subsequently served in all executive positions on the newly formed Children’s Aid Society of Inverness-Richmond.
Bill was able to spend many summers at his Irish Vale home and never missed an opportunity to invite one and all for a “wee” cup of tea.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, the former Judy Morrison; children, Scott, Jeff and Shannon; sister, Sr. Mary E. MacDonald, CND, Toronto and mother-in-law, Nancy Morrison, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 7-9 this evening (Tuesday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, from where vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial of the cremated remains at a future time in Johnstown Cemetery.

Louis P. Marshall
Eskasoni
Louis Peter Marshall, 71, of 25-A Shore Road, Eskasoni, passed away Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at North Sydney, he was the son of the late Peter and Magdalene (Bernard) Marshall.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. In his earlier years Louis worked in the local fishery. He also did work for most of his life as a carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, the former Susie Denny; five daughters, Mary Catherine, Mary Ann, Anna T., Charmaine, and special daughter, Margaret Simon, all of Eskasoni; nine sons, Joe, Shubenacadie, Peter (Kim), George (Malklit), Fred (Kim), Charlie (Alexina), Pat (Sonia), Henry (Sandra), Mike (Judy), all of Eskasoni, Peter Tom (Nancy), Chapel Island; one sister, Annie M. Darvelle, Halifax; one brother, Frank, Boston; 32 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight godchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Bridget Paul, Ellen Paul, Mary Pierro and a sister, Mary Ann in infancy, six brothers, Charlie, Joe P., John P., Stephen P., William P. and by an infant brother, Louis.
The late Mr. Marshall will have visitation Thursday, March 30, 2000 in the family residence after 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
