Dora Ella Vickers
74, Sydney Mines
Dora Ella Vickers, 74, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Gear) Butts.
She was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. Before her retirement in 1989, Dora was employed by the Northside Victoria District School Board. Also, she was an auxiliary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 8, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by three daughters, Josephine (Mrs. Charlie Boomer), Riverview, N.B.; Priscilla (Mrs. Willie Robinson), Judy (Mrs. Tommy Gillis), both of Sydney Mines; five sons, Brian (Mary), Lingan, Sheldon (Jan), Sydney Mines, Darrell (Nancy), Belleville, Ont., Ronald (Rhonda), Eastern Passage, James (Judy), Dartmouth; seven sisters, Ester (Mrs. William Tremblett), Irene (Mrs. Albert Rice), both of Sydney Mines, Jannie MacAskill, Millville, Lillie Jessome, Newfoundland, Ada (Mrs. Rockie Manzic), British Columbia, Violet Osborne and Ruby Brooks, both of Ontario. Dora is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Ballintyne, one daughter, Charlene Elizabeth in infancy, one son, Sidney Carl, three sisters, Gerty Tremblett, Alice Devoe and by her twin sister, Doris Ellidia and one brother, James.
Visitation will be held in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Mildred Violet Chisholm
95, St. Peter’s
Mildred Violet Chisholm, a resident of Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, formerly of Grand Greve, passed away very peacefully Saturday morning, March 4, 2000. At the time of her death she was a patient of the Strait Richmond Hospital lovingly attended by her two daughters, Theresa Krumrie, Amherst, N.S., and Margaret (Jackie) Morrison, Pt. Edward.
She is survived by her sister Hattie MacNeil, St. Peter’s and one brother James Bouchard, Port Hawkesbury.
She was predeceased by one son Clifford Bouchard in 1957 and her husband James W. Chisholm in 1981.
Violet is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas, Montreal, Violet, Hampton, N.B., Chuck, St. John, N.B., Heather, Parrsboro, N.S., and Stephen, Amherst, N.S. She was a great-grandmother to six children.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church Monday (today) at 2 p.m. with Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Funeral is under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Amy Esther (Chislett) Ernst
75, North Sydney
Amy Esther (Chislett) Ernst, a resident of 44 Jackson Drive, North Sydney, passed away Friday, March 3, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary (Jackson) Chislett. Amy enjoyed an extensive nursing career that began upon graduating from the Glace Bay General Hospital in 1947. From there she provided excellent care in many hospitals throughout the province beginning with: Harbourview Hospital in Sydney Mines, Hamilton hospital in North Sydney, and Neil’s Harbour hospital, before leaving for Halifax to work in Pediatrics and with Polio and Tuberculosis patients. She later practiced in Lunenburg before returning to Cape Breton and the Northside General Hospital. Later, she was involved with air ambulance nursing, and finally as an R.N. with Devco, retiring in 1979 from Prince Mine.
She also enjoyed being an amateur radio operator with the call sign of VEI AMY. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church in North Sydney, and at one time was a very active member of the Esther Unit of the U.C.W.
She is survived by her husband Lester; two daughters, Ann Marie Lochead, Blockhouse, N.S., Sandra (Terry) Gillis, Glace Bay; son, George (Diane), Big Bras d’Or; one granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth.
She was predeceased by one brother Reuben Chislett.
Abiding by Amy’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date in Lakeside cemetery North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the I.W.K. or the Children’s Wish Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home North Sydney.
Roderick MacMullin
86, Sydney Mines
Roderick MacMullin, 86, of 18 Peck Street, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Mar. 4, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Neil and Mary (MacMullin) MacMullin. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. He worked as a blacksmith in the Machine Shop at Princess Colliery.
He is survived by his sons Neil (Rita), Edward (Cathy) in Sydney Mines, Johnny (Kathleen), Big Bras d’Or and Patrick at home, his daughters Christine “Tina” (Ernest) Williams, Sydney Mines, Betty (Thomas) Matthews, New Glasgow, Geraldine, Ontario, Helen (Peter) Mansfield, Dartmouth, Barbara and Rose Mary, Vancouver and Margaret Anne in Halifax, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Johnny, Vancouver and his sisters Margaret Wheten, Christine (Alex) MacMillan, Rhodena Moore, Annie Mae Nolan, all of Sydney Mines and Florence in Miami.
He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine Nolan, his brothers Rory (Little Roddie), Archie and Michael and his sisters Katie MacPhee and Effie MacDonald.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Annie Morrison
82, Sydney
Annie Morrison, 82, of 132 Hospital St., Sydney, died Saturday, Mar. 4, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine (MacDonald) MacKinnon. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband Douglas of the MacGillivray Guest Home, daughter Margaret, Toronto, and many nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her sister Mary Morrison, four brothers, John Angus, John Joseph, James and Lauchie.
Visitation will be held at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, in St. Joseph’s Church with Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Richard Arthur Evans
67, Sydney Mines
Mr. Richard Arthur Evans, 67, of 6 Burke St., Sydney Mines, died peacefully Sunday, Mar. 5, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Richard and Annie (Harding) Evans.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. During his lifetime he was employed as a federal public servant, having retired from the Canada Employment Center in Sydney.
He is survived by two sisters, Shirley (Mrs. James Pickles), Sydney Mines and Gwen Lynk, Marion Bridge, nephew, David Pickles and his wife Michelle and their children Kailey and Michael, Calgary, Alberta, and a niece Lisa Lynk, Coquitlam, B.C.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 4-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Cremation will be followed by burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
As memorials, donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Church or to a charity of choice.
