Ethel Loretta May
78, Brs d'Or
Ethel May, 78, of 51 Church Rd., Bras d’Or, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Farrow) Young.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her husband, Philip; her sons, David (Judy) and Doug (Debbie), both in Hamilton, Ont.; her grandsons, Todd, Christopher, Mike and Bryan and her great-granddaughter, Natasha. Also surviving is her sister, Madonna, Florence, and her brothers, David, Bras d’Or and Leo, Hamilton.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Kathleen Alderson, Tina McNamara, Margaret Ronayne and Mildred King and her brothers, James, Arthur, Louie, Billy, Russell and Alex.
Visitation Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Following cremation burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Karoline Siepierski
Sydney
Karoline Siepierski passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. She was 94.
Mrs. Siepierski was born in Poland on Dec. 5, 1905, and was the daughter of the late Michael and Victoria Kaspzyk.
She came to Sydney (Whitney Pier) in 1927, where she resided until her death. Karoline was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Polish Church and during the war years worked at the local steel plant.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Mrs. Henry Poswiata), two sons, both of Sydney, Chester (Mona) and (Kaz) Kazimer (Louise), with whom she resided, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind sisters, Mrs. Helen Rozicki, Sydney and Sophie, Poland.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter in 1941, two sisters, Mary Paruch, Sydney and Stella, Poland, two brothers, Peter and John, in Poland.
The late Mrs. Siepierski will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Main Level, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday). Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Jim MacLean officiating. Interment in the Old Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier.
Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Building Fund or a charity of choice.
Mildred Rose Steele
88, Sydney
Rose Steele, 88, of Sydney, who passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2000, served with the RCAMC during the Second World War. Following the war, she returned to her nursing career in the St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney, as a supervisory nursing teacher and operating room head nurse.
Rose was predeceased by a sister, Ella Pride.
Sarah Jane (Sadie) Bishop
71, Scotchtown
Sarah Jane (Sadie) Bishop, 71, 43 King St., Scotchtown, died peacefully after a brief illness, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on March 15, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Waterford, she was the eldest daughter of the late John and Mary (MacNeil) Bishop.
Sadie was employed with Sears, New Waterford, until her retirement. She was a very special lady and although small in stature, she was strong and steadfast throughout her lifetime and had a great dedication to her family and faith.
Surviving are her three sisters, Theresa and Connie, at home, Kay and Charlie Boudreau, Dominion; two brothers, Fred and Dorothy, Lingan, Ernie and Alma, Scotchtown,; also a sister-in-law, Barbara Bishop, Scotchtown; 15 nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew Charles (Buddy) Boudreau, Dominion; a number of grandnieces and nephews; also special cousins, Agnes MacEachern, Nummie MacEachern and Shiela Petrie, Friend Duncan Varrence.
Sadie was predeceased by two brothers, Neil and Johnny, sister-in-law, Mae.
The body will rest at her family residence, 43 King St., Scotchtown, with visitation Saturday and Sunday. Funeral mass will be held Monday 10 a.m., St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Burial in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.

Anna Marie Fraser
85, New Waterford
Anna Marie Fraser, 85, New Waterford, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Essen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Anna Marie (Pollanz) Drobesch.
Mrs. Fraser immigrated to Canada as a small child, received her schooling at Saint Agnes School in New Waterford. She often travelled to be with her son and his family at various Canadian Foreign Service missions. She loved to share her bingo winnings with her progeny.
Surviving are a son, Peter J. Jr. (Carol), four grandchildren, Kevin (Peggy), Sean, Regan, Brendan, three great-grandchildren, Colin, Catherine and Cristopher.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter J. Sr., a brother, Herman Drobesch, Jr.
The late Mrs. Fraser will have no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Memorial mass to be said in Vancouver at a future date.
Thanks to the many who have helped Annie these last months, especially Anne Gillis for her tender loving care, Flora Gardner, Dr. Azaire and nurses at New Waterford Hospital.
Osborne Philip MacLean
61, North Sydney
Osborne Philip MacLean, 61, of 9 View St., North Sydney, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of Annie MacLean and the late William (Wick) MacLean.
He was a retired stevedore with CN Marine, an active bowler on the Northside and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Besides his mother, children and grandchildren; he is survived by sisters, Donna Petre and Sharon MacLean (Burke), both of Toronto; brother, Brendon J. MacLean, Sydney Mines and his many friends.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his wife, Astrid Munroe.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
