Albert Frederick Greaves
November 30, 1911 - July 28, 2004
GREAVES, ALBERT FREDERICK Born November 30, 1911 – Died July 28, 2004. Albert Greaves was born, attended school, and lived in Montreal until he was twenty-eight. He joined the Dominion Bank after high school working in Montreal, Napanee, and Cobourg. In 1940, Albert married Betty Gray of Boston, Massachusetts, and over the next ten years they had three children: Harold, Elizabeth, and Susan. Two years after moving to Cobourg, he and his beloved wife, the late Betty Greaves, decided to make this their permanent home. Albert then left the bank in 1947 and went to General Foods where he held a variety of positions until his retirement in 1974. Throughout his life, Albert loved numbers. Perhaps because of his affinity for numbers and working with them directly, during his final years of employment, he fought a valiant rearguard action against the coming of computers and the automation of production schedules. When he took early retirement from his position as production planner at General Foods, the company retired his comptometer with him. After forty-eight years of employment, bridge, a game involving numbers, became his passion. Over the years, Albert contributed as he could to the life of the town holding various offices in the Home and School Association, the Boy Scouts, the Board of Cobourg Union cemetery , the Board of Legion Village, and in both St. Peter’s Anglican and Calvary Baptist Churches. Albert felt that if he could help, he would. He enjoyed being a part of the community in general and, in recent years, particularly the communities of Legion Village and the Calvary Baptist Church. For over ninety years, Albert enjoyed life although he never forgot the Depression. It remained a puzzle to him not only that people today could earn large salaries but also that they would actually spend them. Although his health remained good until his ninetieth year, he held no fear of dying. He was buoyed by a strong conviction that after his life, there would be a happy eternity to spend with Betty. Albert leaves his three children, his grandchildren: Lisa (and Richard), Geoff and Kate and great grandson Elliot Albert . A service in celebration of Albert’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Thursday August 5th, 2004 at 2 pm.; reception to follow in the Church Hall. Private interment to take place in Cobourg Union cemetery. If desired donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church or charity of your choice.
