James Gordon Johnson
July 12, 1927 - October 7, 2010

Johnson, James Gordon went to be with his Lord on October 7th 2010, at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Shirley, loving father of son Mark (Joanne), stepson Craig (Rosemary), stepdaughter Deborah and grandfather of Jessica and Michael Lucas. Dear brother of Shirley (Robert), Robert (Jeanne), Wallace (Ellen) and the late Eldon (Gloria). Born in Pembroke, Ontario, James travelled the world, living and working as a communications consultant. He was chair of the board of Teen Haven, in Montreal, until lately and a director of the Cobourg Rotary Club. Rotary work was where he found his greatest satisfaction. Friends will be welcome at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East in Cobourg, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 on Thursday, October 14th and at the funeral at MacCoubrey Funeral Home at 1:30 on Friday, October 15th. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in James’ name to The Rotary Foundation.

Gordon "Gord" Lester Armstrong

Armstrong; Gordon (Gord) Lester at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Gord Armstrong, long time member of the United Steel Workers of America Union, Local # 7175, was the beloved husband of Bernice Marie Armstrong (née Allen). Dear father of Jeffrey (Karen) and Casey (Margaret). Grandfather of Stephanie, Nik, Cole and Micheal. Brother of Frederick (Laurie). Son of Arnold (deceased) and Muriel (née Smith) Mitchell and step-son of John Mitchell. A Celebration of Gord’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E., Cobourg. Loving step-father of Amy, Jamie, George and Nikki and grandfather of Rianna and Tristan. Dear son of Joyce Gillan and the late Gerald Gillan. Brenda Lee Moore - (August 12, 1964 – October 1, 2010) - passed away peacefully at home with family present. Brenda Moore (neé Campbell). Loving wife of Dion Moore of Cobourg, Ontario. Beloved daughter of Raymond and Amie Campbell of Haliburton and daughter in law of Bonnie and Kurt Eser of Bewdley, Ontario. Sister of Brian (Sue) Campbell of Colborne, David (Sue) Campbell of Castleton, sister in law of Joe (Christine) Moore of Napanee, Lisa (Sean) Mandziak of Little Britain. Brenda will be missed by nieces and nephews, Wesley and Amy of Castleton and Cody Campbell of Colborne, Megan and Lucas Moore of Napanee, McKayla, Brooke and Carson Mandziak of Little Britain. Brenda will be missed by her animals (children) cats Twinkle, Cleo and Max, dog Earl. Brenda owned and operated Brenda’s Hairstyling (Little Lake and Colborne) for over 23 years. She was active in the community (sponsored sports) and in her church (Baltimore United). Brenda loved animals and was actively involved with Canada Caring for Kidz in Mexico. (she both sponsored and worked for this organization.) Special thank you to Dr. Moorsom, Port Hope Access Centre and Northumberland Hills Hospital Chemo Department. Babb, Ann Peacefully at Extendicare in Cobourg on Friday, September 10th, 2010, Ann Babb (nee Roelfsema) at 87 years of age. Beloved wife of the late William Babb. Dear mother of Bruce Babb (Carol), Carol Boundy (Harold), and Don Babb (Maida “Rusty”). Cherished grandmother of Gordon (Kirsten), Richard (Jodie), Pamela, Mark, Chad (Tanya), Tristan, Devin, and great grandmother of seven. Survived by her four sisters and one brother. A Memorial Service will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Wednesday, September 15th, at 11 am. Interment to follow at St. George’s cemetery in Gore’s Landing. Visitation to be held on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 am. Those wishing may make a memorial donation by cheque to the Alzheimer Society.

Bernice Loreen Read
July 18, 1926 - September 7, 2010

READ, Bernice Loreen (nee Daniel). Known by many as Bea, was born July 18, 1926 in Virden, Manitoba to Mary McLeod (Daniel) and Nelson Daniel. She passed away peacefully on September 7, 2010 at Northumberland Hills Hospital after a short re-occurring battle with cancer. She was the youngest of 5 children; her sister Myrtle Daniel (Hayhurst) and brothers Wesley Daniel, Norman Daniel, and Doug Daniel. She was raised by her oldest sister Myrtle as a part of her family, due to the untimely death of her mother. Bea was loved like a daughter and was raised as such. Within this family there was Jean Madison, Howard Hayhurst (Margaret), Gordon Hayhurst (Betty), Neil Hayhurst (deceased), Nel Breadner (deceased) (Bill), and Freda May (deceased). She will be forever loved and remembered by her husband Major Angus Vaughan Read, her children Marilyn - deceased (Rob), Loreen (Jim), and Brian (Kym), and her grandchildren Nicole, Tim, Graham, Kate and Cassidy. Anyone who knew Bernice personally, knew of her caring nature and drive to help those in need. Not only supporting her family, especially her grandchildren in sports and school, Bea was always putting her own needs second, as she touched the lives of many people through her career in nursing and her generous volunteerism. Bea had two nursing lives, one with the Military and the other as a civic nurse. The military took her places such as Winnipeg (Marilyn born 1952), Regina (Loreen born 1955), Edmonton, Shilo, and Fort Churchill. It also took her around the world to places such as Germany, (Brian born 1957) . As a civic nurse she was involved with the Saint John’s Ambulance and was awarded the Officer of the Order Saint John – 1985, Presented by the Governor General. With the Victorian Order of Nurses she was inducted as an Honorary Life Member – 2009. With the Canadian Cancer Society she was awarded the Service Award for 20 years of service in 2010. She was a Past President of the Lioness Club - 1978, and a Past President of the Inner Wheel – 1991 to 1992. She was continually involved at St Peter’s Church as the 1st Chair of the Health and Healing Committee, Friends at 10, and many other roles within the local Church. Bea was a wonderful storyteller and loved to reminisce about growing up in Manitoba, her earlier times in Cobourg, and her nursing career (Graduated Virden Collegiate Institute (1945), Graduated Brandon General Hospital (1948) – RN, Graduated University of Alberta (1965) – Diploma in Public Health). Her passing is a sad time for friends and family but also a time to celebrate her full and well-lived life. The family would like to thank everyone who has supported them through this trying time. Visitations will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, on Friday, September 10th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Peter’s Church, King Street East, Cobourg on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Bernice Read Nursing Scholarship, Canadian Cancer Society, St. Peter’s Anglican Church, or St. John Ambulance will be gratefully accepted.

Norman Keith Sharpe
June 2, 1930 - September 5, 2010

Norman Keith Sharpe (Retired Major) It is with sadness in our hearts that we, the loving family of Keith Sharpe, announce his peaceful passing on Sunday, September 5, at the age of 80. Survived by his wife of 15 years, Linda (Sedgwick), they built a loving life together filled with family, friends and loved ones. Keith took great pride in everything that was going on in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Predeceased by his first wife Gwynneth (Chambres). Survived by brothers Forbes (Liz) and Craig (Norma). Children Blair (Brenda), Brian (Maria Eugenia), Douglas (Kris), Kathryn (William Livingstone) and Janet (Randolph McNally). Loved and respected by Linda's children Shawn (Brenda), Brent (Trista), Kathy (Dean). Grandchildren Malcolm, Amelia, Austin, Cameron, Marion, William, Valerie (John Armstrong), Eric (Kassandra), Josh, Aubrey, Madison, Curtis, and Brett. Great-grandchildren Amy, Allison and Landon. Loved son-in-law of Catherine Hogan and brother-in-law of Diane and Bob Adams, Patsy and Gordon Draper, and Roger and Alice Hogan. Fondly remembered by special family friends Lisa Gauthier and Susanne Fennessey. Keith had a long and illustrious thirty-year career in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring in 1979 having reached the rank of Major. He served in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps (later Logistics) in Canada and Germany, and with United Nations peacekeeping forces in both Cyprus and Egypt. After retiring from the military he held the position as business manager at Branksome Hall School in Toronto. His love of stamp collecting, specializing in Canadian Military stamps and Orchids, earned him many local and national awards and hours of enjoyment. Keith was a kind, selfless and generous man, who will be well remembered for his irreverent sense of humour and his abiding love for his family. He loved deeply and was well loved in return. A Memorial Service will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Wednesday, September 8th at 1 pm. Interment to follow at St. Michael’s cemetery. Visitation to be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to Palliative Care unit in the Northumberland Hills Hospital would be appreciated by the family.

Martin Edward Whaley
May 27, 1955 - August 30, 2010

WHALEY, Martin Edward - Peacefully at Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto on Monday August 30th, 2010 in his 56th year. Youngest son of the late Earl and Evelyn Whaley. Dear brother of Richard Whaley, Carolyn Atkins (Bob deceased), Dianne Knight (Ron) and Linda Whaley (Brian). Predeceased by his brothers Peter and David. Dear nephew of Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill. Loved dearly by several nieces. A graveside service will be held at Salem cemetery on Friday, September 10th at 1 pm. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

MacLeod, Neil Lloyd - Peacefully and in the presence of family at the Hawkesbury General Hospital on Sunday, August 29th 2010, Lloyd MacLeod of Cobourg, Ontario, formerly of Dalkeith, Ontario, at the age of 90. Son of the late Roderick M. MacLeod and the late Catherine McCuaig. Beloved husband of 52 years to Helen (nee Rutherford). Loving father of Gordon (Diane) of Mount Albert, Ontario, and the late Ralph (Eleanor). Stepfather to Irwin Sproule (Jean), Linda LeRoy (Arthur), Edwin Sproule (Carolyn) and John Sproule (Judy). Dear brother of Kenneth (Florence) of Fergus, Ontario and the late Alexander (the late Helen). Will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Kailey and Kara, his step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A private interment to take place at a later date at Kirk Hill United Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations on Lloyd's behalf may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
