James Kelvin McDonald - 04/09/2003

The death is announced (5 April 2003) of James Kelvin McDonald (76) of Rockland (Ottawa), and previously for forty years of Kingston and Hartington. For 37 years a professor in the Spanish and Italian department at Queen's University, he was a committed internationalist. This passion was particularly appreciated by later generations of students through his devotion to La Casa, an on-campus house for undergraduate and graduate students in Spanish. Although he was active for many years in the NDP, his single greatest significant achievement was his chairmanship in the 1960s of the Grand Campaign, a successful but by no mean easy fund-raising drive to save The Grand Theatre from destruction. Subsequent generations of Kingston area talent, as well as a host of international stars who have since played The Grand, have every reason to celebrate the achievement of James McDonald and the large committee of concerned citizens he mustered and led. James is remembered and celebrated by his loving wife Luella, and by his six children and their families: son Tam and his partner, Bernice Kaplan, of London England; son Piers and his wife Ofelia, grandson Ewan and granddaughters Lara and Vanessa, of the Yukon; daughter Megan and her husband Brent Slobodin, and grandsons Conal and Kieran, of the Yukon; daughter Moira and her partner Andrew Snow, of Ottawa; and daughter Jane and son Simon, both of Ottawa. A public Memorial Service will be held at the Morgan Memorial Chapel at the Theological College at Queen's University, at 2 p.m. on Friday April 11. Flowers can be sent ahead of time to the chapel, or donations made to the Grand Restoration Project, 218 Princess Street, K7L 1B2. Messages of condolence can be addressed to the website of the Ottawa funeral home, (https://), where cremation has already taken place. James McDonald's ashes will rest in Cataraqui cemetery , where a private family service will be held. Further private remembrances will be held on the land he loved for more than a quarter of a century in Hartington; in West Vancouver, where he grew up; and in the ancient home of his fathers, on the Isle of Skye.
