SAWYER - Bernice
Peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital on Tuesday September 28, 2004, at the age of 72 years. Bernice (nee Rowling) was the beloved wife of the late Wilfred "Bill” Sawyer. Proud and loving mother of Cindy Whitehouse (John), Tracy Johnston (Terry) and Ron (Shelly) all of North Bay and William (Debbie) of New Brunswick. Lovingly remembered by her seven grandchildren. Dear sister of Maxine Wheeler (Wes) of Huntsville, Orma Freeman & Terry Rowling both of Toronto, Clara Hammond (Jim) of Hanover and George Rowling of Guelph. Bernice will also be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews. In accordance with her wishes no visitation. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Forest Lawn cemetery (1075 Tower Drive) on Tuesday October 5th, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev’d. Dr. Wayne Short officiating. Following the service family and friends are invited to gather at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23, 150 First Ave. W. from 2:30 pm – to 4:30 p.m. for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

If desired donations to the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Center, or the charity of your choice will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.

VALOIS - Robert Joseph
Dear son of the late Adelard & Florence Valois. passed away at his home, Callander, on Sunday September 26th, 2004 at the age of 58 years. Robert Valois was the beloved husband of Antoinette (nee Landry). Dear father of Lyne Lafreniere (Brian) of Mattawa, Nicole Valois (Kevin Dinsmore) of Emsdale and Julie Valois of North Bay. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Halyna, Christopher, Antonio & Emily. Dearly loved by his late father in law Antonio Landry, brothers in law Andre & Adelard Landry and sister in law Anna Landry all of Mattawa. Dear brother of Grace Ferrel, Patrick (Suzanne), Leo (Liliane) Louis (Mariange), Charles (Sharon) and Anne-Rita (Earl Crowe). He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Jean-Paul. Proud to be a transport driver Robert worked in the logging industry for many years. He was employed by several different logging companies throughout his career. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. until time for a memorial service in the chapel at 7:30 p.m.

McGALE - Martin
After 35 years working in the diamond drilling industry around the world and 24 years of retirement around 'the Bay', Martin McGale passed away peacefully on Sunday September 26, 2004. Martin leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Rose Angelina (Toner). He will be missed by his sons Allan and wife Audet, Dan and wife Marilyn, and John; by daughters Kathy and Deborah; by grandchildren Karen, Al, Jackie and Iain and by his great grandson Alexandre. Martin was born at the height of the silver boom in 1920 in Cobalt to Jack and Mary McGale. He is predeceased by brothers Tom, Pat, Chris and Jim and sister Viola (Brady). All of us will have warm memories of Martin at the cottage, playing cards or dancing - always with his special sense of humour. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm and Wednesday morning from 9-10:30 am. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church. Interment at the North Cobalt cemetery.

Memorial donations to the North Bay Association for Community Living or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.

SMITH (nee Leduc) - Sharon
passed away at the North Bay General Hospital-Scollard Site on September 16, 2004. Sharon Leduc was the beloved wife of the late Albert Patrick Smith, at the age of 56 years. Loving mother of Steve (Lori) Scott and Ron (Andrea) Scott both of North Bay. She will be sadly missed by her 8 grandchildren Jenna, Megan, Christopher, Lucas, Tyler, Laken, Kelsey and Allie. Also survived by brothers and a sister; Joseph (Deb), Brian (Sue), Terry, Allan, Kim (Peter) and predeceased by her brother Gary (Rhonda). Family will be receiving friends at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, September 18th from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 PM. Funeral service will be held in the Martyn Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, September 19th at 2:00 PM.

Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Sharon's memory.

HARDAGE (nee Stevens-McEwan) - Irene May
Wife of the late Harold Hardage. passed away peacefully on Wednesday September 15, 2004 at the North Bay General Hospital, McLaren Site. She is survived by her son Gary Stevens, daughter Gloria Nevill (Bernie) and two grandchildren Sheri and Steven Nevill. Also survived by her sister Norma Kippen (Eric). Predeceased by her parents Jean and Lorne McEwan, brother Bill and first husband Ernie Stevens. Thanks to Dr. Rod Shemilt and the nurses and staff on the third floor for all their care and support. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday at 3 pm. Interment at Terrace Lawn cemetery.

CHATELAIN-McLAREN - James Alexander "Jimmy"
At the North Bay General Hospital, Scollard Site on Tuesday September 14, 2004 at the age of 23 after a hard fought battle with lympho-blastic lymphoma. He leaves behind his wife Jennifer Chatelain-McLaren and his children Nicole, age 4, and Austin, age 1. Also survived by his biological father Terry McLaren, Mother Barb Chassie and the man who loved and raised him, John Chassie, his sisters Amanda Miron and Sherry-Ann Chassie, his grandparents Ralph and Camille White and Bernard and Wilda Chassie and by his in-laws Sharon and Dan Chatelain. Lovingly remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Jimmy loved all sports but he excelled in baseball and will be sadly missed on the field. Special thanks to all doctors and nurses in North Bay, Sudbury and Ottawa. An exceptional thank you to Pastor Pauline Glover (Aunt Peanie). Also, thank you to Pastor Ken Jeffrey and Pastor Eric Strachan. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Friday from 5-7 pm. The funeral service will follow at the Gateway Pentecostal Church at 7:30 pm. Cremation at the Forest Lawn Crematorium.

EVANS - Pauline Joan "Judy"
Peacefully on Tuesday September 14, 2004, at the North Bay General Hospital at the age of 79 years. Pauline Joan "Judy" Evans was the beloved wife of the late William "Bill" Evans, who predeceased her in 1975. Proud and loving mother of Linda of North Bay, Bill (Mary Lennox) of Manotick, Wayne (Lorette) of Brandon, Manitoba, Tim of North Bay, Rob of Sudbury and Steve (Karen Young) of Toronto. Predeceased by her daughter Patty (Randy Lowry) of Woodstock. Judy will be loving remembered by her grandchildren Chad, Kimberly, Sarah, Jeff, Amanda, Colin, Jill and Eric. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Thursday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held in the Martyn Funeral Chapel on Friday at 11am. Interment will follow in Terrace Lawn cemetery.

THOMAS - Brenda
passed away peacefully on Monday September 13, 2004 surrounded by family and fellow nurses at the Civic Hospital 2 ˝ days after returning from a 3 month struggle in the Princess Margaret Hospital. Brenda battled bravely against leukemia and its treatment for 15 months. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Sadly missed by her husband Brian, son Kevin and his wife Sarit of Toronto and their children Rebecca and Cameron and by her son Mark and his fiance Victoria Lampkin of Oakville. Also missed by her father Clarence Rennick, her sister Beth Brouse and one niece and two nephews and family. She was a long time active and respected member and Life Master at the North Bay Duplicate Bridge Club and was a long time member of the North Bay Nordic Ski Club. Brenda will be remembered as a caring, dedicated and professional nurse in the Critical Care Unit at the North Bay Civic Hospital for 25 years. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 am at St. Andrew's United Church. Interment to follow church reception at the North Bay Union cemetery.

PENNER - Beverley Anne
Peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital, on Saturday September 11, 2004 at the age of 55 years. Beverley Anne (nee Hall) was the beloved wife of Robert Henry Penner. Dearly loved mother of Allan Maitland (Debbie), Bruce Maitland (Tammy), and Brian Maitland (Bobbi - Jo), and Christopher Penner, and step mother of Robert Penner (Cindy Mac), Angela LeRoy (Bill) and Susan Rochon (Jeff Perrin). Beverley will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Kenneth, Robert, Eric, Christina, Justin, Nikita, Branden, Courtney, Alysha, Emily and Brian. A dedicated wife and mother Beverley enjoyed knitting, cooking and baking and Bingo. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Tuesday, September 14th, 2004 from 1:30pm until time for a memorial service in the chapel at 3:30 p.m. Interment of ashes will follow in the Spruce Grove cemetery , Iron Bridge, Ont.

WHALLEY - Ernest Charles
Peacefully at the Algonquin Nursing Home on Saturday September 4, 2004 in his 93rd year. Predeceased by his first wife Effie Owen and by his second wife Lila Strikefoot. Beloved son of the late W.D.C. Whalley and Carrie Mildred Hurlburt. Left to mourn are his brothers and sisters Lorna, Earl, Garth (Shirley), Sheila (Ernest), Don (Anita), Doris (Edgar), Ruth (Cy), Hazel (Lawrence), Bill (Simone) and Keith (Dawn) and his sister-in-law Viena. Predeceased by his sisters Gertrude and Mildred, and brother Bob. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church on Wednesday at 1:30 pm. Interment to follow at the Calvin Township cemetery.

SOUTER - James Michael (Jim)
Jim passed away suddenly at the family cottage on Monday, August 30, 2004 in his 66th year. Beloved husband of Margaret. Loving father of Michael (Michelline), Amanda, and Stephanie Bray (Bill) all of North Bay. Brother to Patricia Yound (Ean). Jim served on the Board of Directors for the Youth Drop in Centre and was the Secretary Treasurer on the Executive of the Nipissing Bar Association. He was appointed to the North Bay Hospital Commission on January 12, 1972. He served on the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman to the Hospital Commission from 1972-1973 and was re-appointed to the Hospital Commission as Chairman in 1974 for 1 year. Jim was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #617. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from City Hall) on Wednesday from 7-9pm and Thursday 7-9pm, with a Masonic Service on Thursday at 7pm. Funeral Service will be held at Trinity United Church on Friday at 11:30am.

Interment to follow at Forest Lawn cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

HUGHES - Eliza Jane "Elizabeth"
The Campbell & Hughes family sadly announce the passing of Elizabeth (nee Campbell), beloved wife of the late Frank Hughes, at Cassellholme on Sunday, August 29, 2004, at the age of 95. She was the daughter of the late Donald & Mary (Carr) Campbell, long time residents of Trout Mills. She married Frank Hughes on May 10th, 1935. Eliza worked for many years at the popular Marine Room, owned by the Hughes brothers on Trout Lake and over 20 years she spent as the baker at Kresges on Main Street. Yummy Buttertarts & Lemon Pies! She was a lifetime member of the Trout Mills Women's Institute. Eliza was predeceased by her siblings Bessie (Bill) Gore, Millie (Tom) Slack, Annie (Poli) Dupret, Don Campbell and Jack Campbell. Survived by William (Harriett) Campbell of North Bay and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from City Hall) on Thursday from 1:30 until time for Funeral Services in the Chapel at 4:00 PM. Interment to follow on Friday morning at 11:00 am at the family plot at Terrace Lawn cemetery.

JOMANTAS - Erika
Peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital on Wednesday August 18th, 2004, after a brief illness. Erika (Nee Paulsen) was the beloved wife of the late Vladas Jomantas. Beloved mother of Marion and her husband Ken Collier, of Kingston and Diane Pask and her partner Pat Sauro of North Bay. Much loved grandmother of Lori dePencier and Melissa Pask both of Kingston, Jeffrey Pask of North Bay and great-grandmother of Ashton also of Kingston. As well as her parents and husband Erika was also predeceased by her son Julius and sister Herta. Sadly missed by her sister Gisela in Germany. A kind woman she will be missed by her many friends and co-workers of the former Civic Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) on Sunday August 22nd at 3:00 p.m. with reception to follow.

NORTHRUP - Calvert Murray
passed away peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital, Scollard Site on Wednesday August 18, 2004 in his 92nd year. Dear husband of 57 years to Nellie. Loving father of Murray (Diane) and Trudy Stanton (Rick) all of North Bay. Papa will be sadly missed by grandchildren Aaron (Sandra Daniher), Colleen (Michael Rollason), Kendra, Stacy, Meaghan (Steve Bowler) and Kristy and by great grandchildren Kailey Northrup, Daniella and Gibson Northrup and Jack Rollason. Predeceased by 5 brothers and sisters. Calvert was a WWII veteran and a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 23 and the North Bay Elks Lodge. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from city hall) this evening from 7-9 pm. An Elks service will be held at 7 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday at 2 pm. Interment to follow at the Forest Lawn cemetery.

BROWN (nee Pipher) - Dorothy "Dot"
Dorothy, beloved wife of the late Wilfred Brown, in her 81st year, died peacefully in her sleep at Cassellholme on Wednesday, August 18, 2004. Loving mother of Dayle (Kathie), Kincardine, Marena Geddes (Bob), Ottawa, and Heather (Wallace), North Bay. Dear grandmother of Jordi, Kady, Lindsay, Shane, Deanna, Derrick and Emily, and great-grandmother of Travis and Taylor. Dorothy was a dedicated and active member of Trinity United Church in her younger years, She had a beautiful singing voice and shared her talents with church choirs and choral groups in North Bay and Florida, where she spent many winter months. Dorothy cherished the many times spent with her family and grandchildren, and enjoyed entertaining friends and neighbours at MacDonald Ave. on Lake Nipissing. She loved music, swimming and playing cards, . especially bridge. On her returns from Florida, she always had a new card game to teach her grandchildren. She taught and played the piano for many years at West Bay Field school, and adored all of her special students. A special thank-you to all of the dedicated, compassionate staff at Cassellholme, Empire Living Centre, Para-Med, and VON who went out of their way to care for her over the last five years. Dorothy was loved by all who knew her, and she will be sadly missed. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug 22, 2004 at 12:00 Noon at the Marlyn Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate Dorothy's life will follow at 1 p.m. in the Martyn Funeral Home Chapel with a luncheon to follow. Interment on Monday at North Bay Union cemetery
