Steffensen, Dr. Roberto
CEO, Geostudio, Inc.
6 August 1935 (Rome) — 31 December 2010 (Ottawa)

Roberto Steffensen, PhD, devoted husband and lifelong partner of Bianca Niccoli and doting, unfaltering father of Sabina and Isabella, has died unexpectedly at his home. He was raised and educated in the heart of Rome by his parents Feliciano Steffensen and Hilda Bolliger. He is predeceased by his older brother Paolo (Rome) and is survived by his younger sister Elena (Vatican City/Rome) and cousins, nephews, and nieces throughout Italy, Switzerland, and England. )
Doctoral studies in geology at the Università di Roma followed compulsory service as an officer of the Italian military. After post-doctoral work in The Netherlands he immigrated to Canada with his young family to accept an Assistant Professorship in the Département de Géologie et de génie géologique at the Université Laval in Québec. He was soon seconded to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, Houston) as part of a select group of scientists responsible for the initial examination and analysis of the lunar materials collected by the Apollo astronauts. )
Dr. Steffensen returned to Ottawa where, following work on several remote sensing projects for the National Research Council of Canada, he established Geostudio, Inc. which pioneered the computerized interpretation of satellite telemetry data for land use studies with particular emphasis on vegetation identification and analysis. )
A gregarious world traveller fluent in several languages Roberto easily made friends everywhere, whether in the bush of northern Quebec or the beaches of Mexico and the Caribbean. He cherished the bonhomie of his several dear friendships in Ottawa, in Italy, and throughout the world and was invigorated by their many debates and long, animated conversations. )
Roberto’s foremost love was his family. His greatest joy, his daughters’ daughters, will miss his comforting presence more than words can express. Adriana and Clara (Sabina Steffensen and Paul Stoesser, Toronto) and Sophia and Anna (Isabella Steffensen and Mike Grimes, Kanata) enjoyed the most privileged love and generosity of their irreplaceable Nonno. Roberto also revelled in the successes of his daughters in their numerous activities of competitive swimming, cycling, and horseback riding and rejoiced in their later achievements as students, as young wives and mothers, and as career professionals. To his sons-in-law he imparted by quiet unswerving constancy the model of how to be both husband and father. For over fifty years Roberto’s nearest, dearest treasure and singular love, Bianca — wife, lover, companion, confidant — knew him best, loved him unequivocally, and now suffers his absence most grievously.
