Armstrong, William George Donald (Don)
July 24, 1927 - August 21, 2009
A musician, sportsman, civic and business leader, Don “Shoes” Armstrong passed away Friday, August 21st surrounded by his family. Born in Ottawa, he joined the family shoe business in 1946, becoming the President of Armstrong and Richardson Shoes a few years later. He met his soul mate, Eileen Middlestadt, when she had a lead part in the Orpheus Society’s 1948 production of “Sweethearts”. (Don was in the chorus.) They married in 1949 and went on to produce six children: Betty Anne, Geoffrey, David, Richard, Craig and Andrew. In turn, their children went on to produce 11 grandchildren. Don and Eileen continued to sing together in Orpheus and later in the choirs of St. James and Woodroffe United Church. In the meantime, Don was very involved in local business and civic affairs, serving on the executives of the Junior Board of Trade (Jaycees), the Ottawa Board of Trade, the Ottawa Executive Association and Rotary. He also served as an alderman for Capital Ward for two terms in the ‘60’s. He was probably most proud of having served on the Board of Directors for Calian Technology for over twenty years. Don loved sports! He skied well into his 60’s and golfed regularly until his 82nd year. In fact, he often boasted of being the most senior member, not in years, but in length of membership of the Ottawa Hunt Club. He also played a few hands of gin and euchre, too. His absence will be felt by his extended family and friends in Ottawa, Mont Ste. Marie and Florida. Friends may pay respects at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore and Baseline Road) Nepean, on Tuesday, August 25 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Woodroffe United Church, 207 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa on Wednesday, August 26th at 1 p.m. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff at the Ottawa Heart Institute and ask that any donation be made to the Heart Institute.
