Proud and distinguished Veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy and one of Canada’s pioneer into the launch of the Allouette 1, Canada’s entry into research in space. Bill's greatest joy was his family, and he is deeply mourned by Lee, his beloved wife of 50 years, his children Anne and Bruce (Wendy), his cherished granddaughter Kloë, and his brother-in-law Bill Rigby. Bill is also survived by his brother Bob and sister Janice in Dartmouth, N.S. Bill retired from the Department of External Affairs after 39 years of public service. Trained as an electronics technician, his career allowed him to travel the world, including postings to Germany, Belgium, Japan and Czechoslovakia. In retirement, he enjoyed cooking, diving, lunch with his friends, cruises to exotic locales and tinkering in his workshop. Unexpectedly in Toronto on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in his 43rd year. Son of Roy and Jocelyne. Brother of Julie (Sean O’Connell), Edward (Nathalie) and Jennifer (J.C. Gagne). Uncle to Justin, Adam and Alison. Well known for his theatre involvement in Toronto and Ottawa as an actor, director and playwright. He was involved as an actor in Salamandar Theatre and a tutor of drama for young people. Co-producer of Stage for Aids and Assistant Director of the play “Trying”, both took place at the National Arts Centre. He also acted in plays at the Ottawa Little Theatre and Upper Canada Playhouse. His heart and soul were put into whatever endeavour he was doing at that time, he will be greatly missed. Born in Barrie, Ontario in 1930 and married to Elizabeth (Robinson) in 1951, Herb leaves an abundance of friends in Hamilton, Calgary, Cranbrook, Red Deer, Regina, and Ottawa where he has lived since 1965. In all of these communities, Herb was an active member of the Anglican Church. Loving father to Heather (Peter Bennett), David (Lise Denis), Janet (EA Clarke), Ruth (Mishka Lysack) and Nancy (Larry Ross) and cherished Poppi to Margaret, Simon, Jeff (Michelle), Eric, Rebecca, Samuel and Charles. We will greatly miss Dad's dry sense of humour and thoughtful guidance. We have many happy memories of Dad skiing, watching baseball, swimming in the pool, summer camping trips, and geography quizzes on the way to Barrie. The family would like to sincerely thank the Ottawa Heart Institute for giving Herb outstanding care and treatment for the last 12 years and to the staff at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their kindness in caring for him these last few weeks. Surrounded by the love of his family, Bob Blackburn passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the age of 76. Son of the late Arthur and Cecilia Blackburn and much loved husband of Donata Blackburn (nee Wolkowycki). Bob will be deeply missed by his loving daughters Nancy, Ann (Bob) and Susan (Mark) and their mother Coreen Blackburn. To Donata’s children, Kelly Therien (Daniel), Adam Gilmour (Mandy) and Michael Gilmour (Tammy), Bob was a loving stepfather and incredible friend. He was the “best-ever” Papa to Allie and Kevin Blackburn, Connor and Lauren Bogart, Hannah and Riley Gilmour, Emelina and Analisa Therien and Aidan and Mackenzie Gilmour. His sisters, Joyce (Charles Hairr), Doreen Blackburn and Shirley (John Gregson) will miss his mischief, humour and love. He was a very special uncle to many nieces and nephews. “Pirate Bob” will always be fondly remembered by the Wolkowycki family. Loving Mom to Chuck (Paula), Fred (Celeste), Joseph Michael and Mary Jane (Gerard). Predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Wilbert, Emery, Gus, Charlie, Mable, Leona, Mazie, Edna, Theresa, and Rita. Survived by her good friend and sister, Frankie Cracknell. Gramma to Lisa (Michael), Matthew (Wendy), Seanna (John), Jeffrey (Stephanie), Andrea (Daniel) and Great Gramma to Madeline, Elizabeth, Molly, Charlie, Harry, Caroline and Charlotte and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. Eileen was a happy and grateful woman, living independently in her home with her little dog Kelly. She will be remembered for her strong spirit, her sense of humour and her appreciation for living every day “without a pain or an ache”. She loved art and music, and enjoyed playing her piano.
