CLARKE, Charles Amos
CLARKE, Charles Amos of Unionville, passed away quietly at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Tuesday December 4th, 2007 age 92 years. Dearly beloved husband of Jeanne Ker-Hornell Clarke, loving father of Barbara Takach & David Overland and his wife Beverley, step-father to Sarah and Jennifer Ker-Hornell, beloved grandfather of Darrin & Jennifer Jones. This extra ordinary man was born and raised on the dairy farm, south of Manila, Ontario in 1915. Charles' big love was music. He taught himself to play the violin and read music, later writing music and lyrics to perform publicly. Young Charles sang tenor with his 3 older brothers on the farm, with their sister accompanying them on the piano & organ. By the time Charles was 15 years old, in the 1930's the Clarke brothers were singing 4 part harmony, putting on concerts all over southern Ontario in churches and community centers. Charles had phenomenal memory that stood him in good stead in his later successful career in insurance. He moved to Toronto, aged 23, having recently married , and became active in charity work. In 1996 he was given awards from the Children's Aid Society and the Ontario Government for delivering 1531 babies to their designated homes for adoption- all over Ontario for a 25 year period. Charles and his late wife made this their life's work, as long as Doris was able. It seemed that whatever Charles did, he did well. He even sewed zippers into his 25 shirts, because a freak accident at the age of 12 robbed him of the first finger of his right hand, so he couldn't do up buttons. Charles was always organizing something during his life, and he later played golf, even getting a hole in one. He loved bowling, horseshoes and skated until he was 89 years old. He played a mean game of bid euchre, snooker and was Crokinole Champion of Unionville. In recent years he could be seen at fall festivals on the Unionville Main Street, with his antique crokinole board, challenging all comers to play for charity. He was treasurer of the Wyndham Gardens Residence. He was treasurer of the York Region Seniors Games Committee for 17 years resigning at the age of 90 in 2005. Charles loved to bake pies & growing baby's tears plants, so much so that he entered and won 1st prizes at the Markham Fair for his plants and his poetry. His high intelligence and pragmatic attitude took him through his very long life, with several life- threatening illnesses that he surprisingly overcame. Charles will long be remembered for his incredible stamina- his 6 foot 3 inch lanky figure, and slow drawling voice telling his never ending jokes. One close friend from 50 years ago described him as "one of the finest men on this planet." Charles was truly an extraordinary man! At his request, there will be no funeral service at this time, a memorial service may be announced at a later date. Private interment will take place later. If you wish to remember Charles, a donation to the Ontario Heart Foundation or the The Canadian Cancer Society, would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to DIXON-GARLAND FUNERAL HOME, 166 Main Street N, Markham, Ontario. Notice dated 2007-12-08
