Lt. Com. - retired Suddenly, but peacefully, at Granite Ridge Nursing Home, Stittsville, ON, on Friday, February 17th, 2006 in his 86th year. Much loved and devoted husband of Norah ( nee Paley ) in their 65th year of marriage. Dearly loved Dad of Lt. Com. Richard (Cathy ) Darthmouth, NS; Susan Baker ( Tom) Carleton Place, ON; and Gordon ( Wendy ), Almonte, ON. Cherished Grampa and Poppa to Jennifer, Justin, Jordon Powell, Jody Baker and Chelsea Powell. Dear son of the late Jonathan and Hannah Powell. Dear brother of Gwen Rattray ( Chuck ) Squamish, BC, and the late Idris Powell. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bill proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 33 years. A Memorial Service will be held at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road, Ottawa on Monday, February 20 2006 at 2:30p.m. Donations in Bill s memory can be made to the Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program, 103 Judson Street, Carleton Place , ON or the National Capital Sport s Council of the Disabled, 4-880 Wellington Street, Ottawa,ON. Richard John (Rick) Schumann - 02/13/2006

In hospital on Monday, February 13, 2006 at the age of 73 years. Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Elaine Salmon. Predeceased by his parents Daniel and Lilian (nee DeGray). He leaves to mourn his mother-in-law Elsie Salmon of Ottawa, his brother and sister-in-law Art and Veronica Salmon, his niece Erica, nephew Andrew, all of Oakville and cousins Brian, Wayne and Gale DeGray of Atlanta, Georgia. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rehabilitation Centre of the Ottawa Hospital, or the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Loving father of Lynne Gale (the late Gary), Martin (Cathy), and Gary. Cherished grandfather of Cindy (Terry), Terry (Janet), Cheryl and Tracy and great-grandfather of 6. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow. Interment Pinecrest cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated.

Mary Elizabeth Swain (nee Joyce) - 02/07/2006

Died peacefully in her sleep in her 92nd year at St. Patrick's Home, Friday February 3, 2006. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 27 March 1914, the daughter of Maurice and Elizabeth Joyce. Predeceased by her husband, Commander Robert Francis, R.C.N., her son, John Frederick and her sister, Honora, (Sister John Elizabeth). She is survived by her son Robert and his wife Wendy and granddaughters Deirdre and Moira; by her son David and his wife Sandy and granddaughter Sabrina and grandson Peter; by her daughter-in-law Jacqueline and grandson Christopher and granddaughter Nikola. A women of many talents and determination she had almost to the end a drive for life that touched all who knew her. Tenacious in her love of family and friends, a part of her heart always stayed in Nova Scotia. She loved water, sun and wind whether at Hubbards or at Sand Bay on the Ottawa, or on the balcony at St. Patrick's. A potter of distinction, she taught ceramics for many years in the Ottawa school system. She was lovingly tended in her last years by the caregivers at St. Patrick's, and the family extends its great gratitude to them. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Tuesday, February 7th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held in the Chapel at St. Patrick's Home on Wednesday, February 8th at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Notre Dame cemetery.

Dean Gregory Taylor Tower - 02/11/2006

At home, surrounded by his family on February 11, 2006, Dean Tower, long-time Ottawa family counsellor and broadcaster. Born May 1, 1937, in Norquay, Saskatchewan, third son of the late Courtney Leigh Tower and Hope Taylor. Beloved husband of Mary Jane. Dearest father of Johanna (Carleton Place), Michael and David (Ottawa); and dearest stepfather of Ellie (Veneto, Italy) and Thomas (Ottawa). Grandfather of Jeffrey and Bill, and great-grandfather of his special Lauren. Cherished brother of Hope (Edmonton), Courtney (Ottawa), Beverley (Norquay), Diana (Spruce Grove, Albeta) and Cecilia (Edson, Alberta). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road) on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, February 16 at 11:30 a.m. His ashes will be buried this spring near the family homestead in his beloved Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be gratefully appreciated.

Peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on Monday, February 13, 2006. Survived by her beloved husband Paul Ventura. Cherished mother of Brian Lauzon, Kim (Mike) Wieners, Tony (Nathalie) Ventura, Laura Ventura-King (John) and Leslie Ventura (Rick Hynes). Dear sister of William (Yolande) O Connell, the late Gordon O Connell and the late Dorothy Newton (late Ralph). She will also be missed by her many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Basilica, 220 Kent Street on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 10am with reception in the church hall followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Lung Association would be appreciated. Arrangement in care of the Central Chapel of Hulse Playfair and McGarry.

Sven retired from teaching at Ottawa Tech, Gloucester, and McArthur High Schools to farm in the Kemptville area. Peacefully in Ottawa on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at age 79 years. Beloved husband of Mary (nee Vickery). Loving father of Bob (Laurie), Jane (Brian Vaughan), Anne and Joe (Pauline). Will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Jessica, Amanda, Sean, Adam, Thomas, Nick, Dean and Laura. Dr. Armstrong led a distinguished career with Health and Welfare Canada. As the first Director of the newly created Medical Care Program, he implemented public health insurance in Canada in 1967. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Wednesday, March 1st after 11:30 a.m. until time of Service in the Chapel at 1 p.m. Interment Capital Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He will be missed.
