Fr. Thomas Joseph Paul Thompson

Our Dad, Fr. Thomas Joseph Paul Thompson, was born July 21, 1918 and died May 14, 2011 (the feast of St. Matthias) at the age of 92. These years were a devotion to Christ and His Church. Dad’s childhood, while a time that he recalled with great fondness, also involved tragedy: he nearly died from a protracted illness, then lost both his father and mother at an early age. The trauma was great, and when he left for school his academics suffered. His intellect was not to remain suppressed, however, and a brilliant academic career resulted in a masters degree in Latin and Greek. With the language of the Church mastered, he answered a call to the Catholic priesthood with the Basilian Order and taught at St. Michaels’ College School in Toronto. But upon meeting Helen Murphy, it became apparent that a dispensation from Rome to leave the practice of his priesthood and enter into marriage would be required. Joseph and Helen married , and eleven children were born into a family of vibrant Catholic Faith. Joseph continued his teaching career in Sarnia, Ontario, where his advocacy of unborn children resulted in a battle with the school board marked by student sit-ins supporting him and a lengthy court battle. Dad lost his job, but not his perseverance in his great fight against abortion. He worked as a janitor to support his family, enlivening them with his example, his love of God, his love of mothers and unborn children, and his rejection of any private or systemic encouragement of death. This example was rewarded with a return to teaching at St. Michael’s in Toronto. Dad’s intelligence was a conspicuous feature of his life, and particularly evident in his development of a new theological concept: using the Greek letter “chi,” he demonstrated how the scriptural assertion that “all things go in pairs by opposites” reveals the paradox at the heart of our existence. If we separate those paradoxical opposites we create disorder; if we observe them, we will be governed by a joyful order. His wife, our beloved Mother, died in 1994. Joseph consoled and guided his children through the aftermath of this tragedy with tremendous love. His duties as a husband discharged, he sought a return to the practice of his priesthood. Though obstacles arose, they were ultimately overcome by an unplanned encounter in Rome with Cardinal Ratzinger, who directly intervened to ensure Dad’s ministry as a priest would be resumed. The future Pope Benedict XVI saw, in a brief encounter, the great holiness that has characterized our Dad’s life. Our father died in a beautiful house surrounded by his children who were reciting the prayers he taught, and which sustained a life of loving devotion to his family and, first and foremost, Jesus Christ. One of his favourite quotes from his favourite author, G.K. Chesterton, precisely describes Dad’s life, which navigated with such success the pitfalls of what John Paul II termed the culture of death: “... to have avoided them all has been one whirling adventure; and in my vision, the heavenly chariot flies thundering through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling and prostrate, the wild truth reeling but erect.” May that chariot arrive him at the destination he always sought; may the body and blood of Christ bring him to everlasting life. Fr. Joseph is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, his beloved grandchild Matthew Dzisiak, and his beloved son-in-law, Eduard Koehl. He is survived by eleven children, 44 grandchildren, and one sibling, Fr. Vincent Thompson, C.S.B. The family gratefully acknowledges the people whose faith and love underpinned their professional care for Dad: Ronald Frias, Dr. Jennifer Wilson, Marcia, Dianne, and Margaret. And we thank especially those many priests and religious who attended to Dad’s spiritual needs, including: Fr. John, Fr. Roy, Fr. Liam, Fr. Kenneth, Fr. Boyd, Fr. Barringer, Brother Xavier, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, and Dad’s brother, Fr. Vincent. Dad’s wake was held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main St. S. Uxbridge (905) 852-3073 on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. His Funeral Mass was held at the Saint Basil’s Church (50 St. Joseph St. Toronto) on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Cross cemetery , Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Campaign Life Coalition, 104 Bond St, Suite 300, Toronto, ON, M5B 1X9.
