Stanton, Clara Laurine
Clara Stanton (nee Halbert), former owner of the Wildwood Inn on Sparrow Lake, passed from this life quietly on July 1, 2007 at the Trillium Manor in Orillia, in her 91st year. She was the beloved wife of Ernest Stanton of Port Stanton, who predeceased her on March 25, 1997. She is sadly missed by her children: Ron (and his wife Irene) of Port Stanton, John (and his wife Helen) of Port Stanton, Susan (and her husband David Pryke) of Port Carling, and Janet (and her husband Robert Shaw) of Port Stanton. Her son Christopher predeceased her. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Sandra, Bruce, Doug and Dianne; Marjorie, Chester, Gwen, Angela and Bryan; Kristin, Katie and Kelsey; and by 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. She was a dear sister to Norma (Mrs. Jack Gregory) of Orillia and predeceased by her sisters Ellen (Reynolds), Ethel (Turner), Laura (Mitchell), Elizabeth (McCaig) and brothers Harold, John and Edwin. She was born August 25, 1916 in Mono Township, the daughter of the late Martha and John Arthur Halbert. The family moved to Beeton in 1918 and then to Thornton, where Clara spent her formative years. She often recounted the joys and sorrows of farm life during the Depression. She remembered the family's disappointment when a trainload of potatoes shipped to the West sold for such a pittance that the family did not recoup the transportation costs. These setbacks were tempered by the satisfaction of doing her chores, mastering the ability to stack a neat pile of wood, picking raspberries in the heat of the summer then cooling off in the swimming hole. She attended S.S. No. 9 Innisfil Public School. Her father sat on the School Board and was one of the prime movers in getting a continuation school in Thornton, which Clara attended. She completed her high school education at Barrie High School. After high school Clara went into training as a nurse at Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. However she soon realized she was not cut out to be a nurse and left after the probationary period ended. She often wished she'd pursued a career in writing as she loved to write. After leaving nursing, she accepted a summer job at Wildwood Inn, on Sparrow Lake in the village of Port Stanton, where she met Ernest Stanton. They were married on October 19, 1936 at Thornton United Church. They began their married life in Port Stanton where Ernest earned money by trapping and operating a garage and boat livery. During the Second World War, the family moved where the war work took them. Ernest was a skilled machinist who oversaw the construction of deHavillands in St. Catharines and Mosquito bombers in Orillia. After the war they purchased Bayview Lodge from Ernest's brother Edwin. They operated this resort for a number of years then purchased Wildwood Inn from Ernest's brother Walter in 1955. Many of the guests became family friends during that time. They sold the lodge in 1967 to their son, Ron. Clara was active in the Sparrow Lake Women's Institute, the Anglican Church Women, and Junior Auxiliary. She is well remembered as the smiling face behind the front desk at the family resort, where she was a true partner in the business, working long hours waxing floors, cleaning windows, sewing drapes and tending the resort's huge flower gardens. When the rest of the family's day was done, she stayed up answering correspondence on the family's oak dining table. For the past four years Clara's home, in the real sense of the word, has been Trillium Manor in Orillia where new friends and caring staff became her extended family. An important milestone in her life was the celebration of her 90th birthday at Trillium Manor, when she was presented her with scrolls of congratulations from the Governor General, the Prime Minister and Premier. The family will recieve friends at the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia, from 7-9 P.M. on Tuesday July 3, 2007. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at 1 p.m.  Interment will follow at St. Luke's cemetery , Hamlet at 3 p.m. In memory of Mrs. Stanton, donations to the Trillium Manor Bus Fund would be appreciated by the family.
