KATHERINE (KATIE) BLISS

Katherine (Katie) Bliss, 76, of Mine Centre, Ont., passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Katie was born May 15, 1921 in Insinger, Sask. to the late Nickolas and Mary Serediuk.
She was united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1946 to David W. Bliss in Mine Centre, Ont. In 1996, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was an active volunteer in the Mine Centre area, and was very involved with her family.
She is survived by her husband, David; children, Tony and wife, Louise, of Emo, Ont., and their children, Kim Jo (Troy Calder) and Shane; David and wife, Denise, and their children, Shannon (Derek Jackson) and Laureen (David Searle); Kathy and husband, Bob, and their children, Jamie (Kim), Allyssa, Jasmin, Rob (Kelly), and Stuart (Kelly); Richard and wife, JoAnne, and their children, Todd and Tanis; and Jim and friend, Lori, and his children, Brande, Brittney, and Abraham.
Katie also is survived by two brothers, John (Daisy) of Langley, B.C., and Bill (Edna) of Wadena, Sask.; three sisters, Helen Pindus of Yorkton, Sask., Annie McEvoy of Surrey, B.C., and Doris Law of Fort Frances, Ont.; three brothers-in-law, Joe and wife, Connie, of Mine Centre, Ont., George and wife, Ruth, of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Robert of Mine Centre, Ont.; two sisters-in-law, Francis McKeil of Mine Centre, Ont., and Norma and husband, Ken Ryan, of Toronto, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Matt, George, and Tony.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Father Michael Lomaszkiewicz officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were Art McMillen, Stan McMillen, Joe Bliss Jr., George Bliss Jr., Ken Carlson, and Ken Cone.
Honourary pallbearers were Kim Jo Bliss Calder, Shane Bliss, Shannon Jackson, Laureen Bliss, Jamie MacDonald, Todd Bliss, Tanis Bliss, Brande Bliss, Brittney Bliss, and Abraham Germain.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, P.O. Box 444, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8, or to the Mine Centre Fire Hall c/o Larry Sweigard, Mine Centre, Ont., P0W 1H0.

DOUG KELLY

Doug Kelly, 52, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Friday, Aug. 15, 1997.
He was born Jan. 23, 1945 in Sabaskong First Nation to the late Jim and Marion Kelly. Doug had lived all of his life in Sabaskong, and on Sept. 19, 1966 he was united in marriage to the former Lucille White.
For many years, he had guided on the lakes, and worked for the band. Doug also was an active member of the board of directors for Oh-shki-be-ma-te-ze-win Inc. in Couchiching First Nation. He also was a board member of the Lake of the Woods Cultural Centre, and was a respected Elder who was regularly asked to participate in meetings.
Doug loved playing with his grandchildren, and also enjoyed fishing while still in good health.
He was predeceased by one brother, Clarence Joseph Kelly in infancy.
Doug is survived by his wife, Lucille Kelly of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; three daughters, Yvonne Geauvreau-Turner and husband, Jeff, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont., Cheryl and husband, Herb May, of Red Lake, Mn., and Marilyn Goodsky of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; one son, Clarence Kelly and wife, Becky, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; and nine grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Richard of Red Lake, Mn., Gilbert Kelly and Phillip Kelly, both of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; six sisters, Frances of Red Lake, Mn., Rosalyn Copenace of Thunder Bay, Ont., Phyllis of Kenora, Ont., Mary Kelly of Oshawa, Ont., Janet Kelly of Kenora, Ont., and Linda Kelly of Thunder Bay, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Sabaskong First Nation. Deacon Elmer Mainville and Elders Bessie Mainville, Peter Kelly, Fred Kelly and Peter White officiated, with interment in Sabaskong First Nation cemetery.
A wake was held Monday evening at Sabaskong First Nation.
In memoriam donations may be made to either the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Box 807, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3N1, or the Canadian Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 655, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M9.

MARGUERITE LICHTENSTEIN

Mrs. Marguerite Lichtenstein passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged on Aug. 19, 1997 after a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 3, 1922 in Moose Jaw, Sask., she grew up in Fort Frances and married Richard Lichtenstein on June 1, 1946. Following this, they moved to Atikokan, where she was active in the Eastern Star and the Atikokan Curling Club. They later moved to Emo and lived there until retirement in 1978.
During her stay in Emo, she enjoyed volunteering for "Meals on Wheels," and worked for the Emo Curling Club. Upon retirement, they moved to Winnipeg and lived there until her husband’s illness in 1989, following which they moved to Thunder Bay to be close to family.
Marguerite is survived by son, Calvin, and wife, Monica; daughter, Leslie Piechota and husband, Richard; and grandchildren, Michael, David, and Jenna Piechota.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1989; brother, Robert Andrews; and sister, June Selin.
She will be greatly missed by her family.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, Thunder Bay, Ont., with Rev. Gwen Nicol-MacDonald of Westminster United Church officiating.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.

ADRIENNE MCCULLOCH

Adrienne McCulloch, 65, of Barwick, Ont., passed away unexpectedly Aug. 9, 1997 while visiting in Grand Prairie, Alta.
Adrienne was a member of the Stratton United Church, where she helped with Sunday School when able.
Adrienne had a positive outlook on life. She struggled for many years with bad health, including having to be fitted with an artificial limb, but this never kept her from enjoying her life. She loved to travel with her husband, Donald, and often they took their grandchildren with them.
Adrienne was always happiest around children; when she volunteered at Sturgeon Creek School, every child there called her "Grandma."
Adrienne will be sadly missed and always remembered by her husband, Donald McCulloch, of Barwick, Ont.; his younger brother, Lorne (Ruth) of Manitouwadge, who Adrienne took into her home and heart when he lost his mother at the age of 10; her son, John (Eline) of Maple Ridge, B.C.; her son, Hugh, of Edmonton, Alta.; her daughter, Margaret (Sean) of Thunder Bay, Ont.; her ex son-in-law, Paul (Donna) of Stratton, Ont.; her grandchildren, Justin, Mark, Terra, Teresa, Brady, and Kaylee of Stratton, Ont.; granddaughter, Nicole, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; granddaughter, Dana, of Fort Frances, Ont.; Lorne’s children, Shannon and Glenda in Alberta, and Tara and Darren of Manitouwadge; her father, Gordon Melvin, of Valleyview, Alta.; brother, Hugh (Sal) of Valleyview, Alta.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place.
A prayer service will be held at the Stratton United Church on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997 at 7 p.m. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21,1997 at 2 p.m. at the Barwick Hall.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Adrienne, you will never be far from our thoughts and always in our hearts. We love and will miss you!

ELIZABETH BEATRICE ARMSTRONG

Elizabeth Armstrong, 84, of 610 First St. W., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
She was born Dec. 10, 1912 in Sleeman, Ont. to the late Joseph and Anna Triskle. Elizabeth was raised in Sleeman and on March 17, 1934, was united in marriage to Victor Armstrong.
Elizabeth and Victor lived in Sleeman until 1962, when they moved to Thunder Bay, Ont. until January, 1979, moving back to Rainy River District and settling in Fort Frances.
Elizabeth enjoyed the friendly family card games, knitting, cooking, and reading new recipes (and making changes she thought might improve them.) She also enjoyed spending time at the cabin.
Most of all, she loved her family, and spending time with them and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband, Victor Armstrong (June 28, 1984); seven brothers, John, Frank, Joe, George, Ken, Edward, and Alex Triskle; and one sister, Lillian McIntosh.
Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters, Betty and husband, Arnold Brown, of Fort Frances, Ont., Doreen and husband, Reg Kaus, of Sleeman, Ont., and Margaret and husband, Richards Ganyo, of Eagan, Mn.; one son, Robert Armstrong and wife, Wilma, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; six grandchildren, Laureen, Diane, Robbie, Lisa, Beth, and Kristin and their families; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Freeberg of International Falls, Mn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances. Rev. Patrick Playfair officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were Robert Carroll, Dennis Jodoin, Andrew Cordeiro, Robbie Armstrong, Andy Cordeiro, and Wayne Triskle.
Honourary pallbearers were all of her family and friends.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Knox United Church, 340 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 1E1, or to the charity of your choice.

PAUL DEGELMAN

Paul Degelman, 71, of 818 Second St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997.
He was born Oct. 24, 1925 in Fort Frances to the late Frank and Annie Degelman. In 1943, Paul enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces, and served with the army in Canada until his discharge in 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Fort Frances, where on Sept. 11, 1948 he was united in marriage to the former Arvilla Schickling.
He worked as the paper machine programmer for O & M and Boise Cascade, and retired in 1984 following 42 years of service.
In Fort Frances, he was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and a Third-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Paul enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and loved to take them hunting and fishing.
His life and passion was spending time with his family at their cabin on Red Gut Bay. Paul and Arvilla are well-known among their many Red Gut Bay friends and fellow cabin owners, and will be remembered for building together the East Road Red Gut Bay.
He was predeceased by his father, Frank Degelman, on April 24, 1989; and by his mother, Annie, on Feb. 8, 1962.
Paul is survived by his wife, Arvilla Degelman, of Fort Frances, Ont.; three daughters, Beverly and husband, Clare Brunetta, of Fort Frances, Ont., Janet Degelman of Winnipeg, Man., and Karen and husband, Russell Conway, of Victoria, B.C.; and five grandchildren, Paul, Danielle and Michael Brunetta, and Virginia and Olivia Conway.
He also is survived by one sister, Florence and husband, Kenneth Anderson, of Etowah, N.C.; two nephews, Kent and Rick Anderson; and one niece, Patti Afendoulis, all of Illinois.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Father Brian Primeau O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Frances.
Visitation was held Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m., with parish prayers offered at 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were Alvin Armstrong, Ernie Brunetta, Walter Sobkowicz, Bud Hebert, Jack Steinke, and Kent Anderson.
Honourary pallbearers were Russell Conway, Paul Brunetta, Michael Brunetta, Jack Egan, Herb Cridland, and Rick Anderson.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 655, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M9, or the East Road Red Gut Bay, c/o Lea Barr, P.O. Box 607, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M9.

JAMES QUENTON FALCONER

In loving memory of James Quenton Falconer, who passed away Aug. 17, 1997 at Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora, Ont.
James is survived by his loving wife, Edna (nee Parks); his sons, Jim (Barbara) of Edmonton, Alta., and Paul (and friend, Donna) of Red Deer, Alta.; daughter, Janette Stenhouse (Joe) of Red Deer, Alta.; and grandchildren, Ashleigh, David, Christopher, Michelle, and Christine.
James also is survived by his step-children, Vera Woods (Russ) of Alviston, Ont., Blair Parks (Janice) and Terry Parks (Mary Lou) of Fort Frances, Ont.; his step-grandchildren; and his step-great-grandchildren.
James was predeceased by his first wife, Eileen (nee Dunsmore), in 1963.
James was born Feb. 18, 1922 in Weyburn, Sask. He was a veteran of the Second World War, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 63.
He moved to Dryden, Ont. in 1981 to be a guard at the Dryden Paper Company. He also ran an upholstery business until his retirement.
James always enjoyed nature, life and a good joke. He was always happy to see the children.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997 from 1-2 p.m. at the Moffat Chapel. A funeral service followed at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Koebernick officiating.
A Legion service was officiated by Rev. Jim Kirkpatrick immediately after the funeral service.
Interment was in the Dryden cemetery.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association through the Moffat Chapel, Box 412, Dryden, Ont., P8N 2Z1.
