MOLLY RODLAND

Molly Rodland, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Ellen “Molly” Rodland was born Dec. 21, 1907 in Rollette, N.D. to the late John and Olive (Jacobson) Rodland. Around 1912, she moved with her family to Canada, where they farmed in Shenston, Ont.
Later, they moved to Fort Frances, where she attended high school. She then worked in various jobs, including the White Pine Inn.
During W.W. II, Molly lived in Toronto and did war work. After a lengthy illness and recovery, she taught herself typing and worked as a medical receptionist until her retirement to Fort Frances.
Aunt Molly, as she was known to many people, was as loving as she was determined. She was generous and fun. Her family and friends were the heart of her life. Molly most enjoyed spending time with her cherished and numerous nieces and nephews. She had many friends in her lifetime, and ws referred to as “the sweetheart of Green Manor.”
As well as reading, card games, Scrabble, and visiting, Molly was creative at petitpoint.
Molly was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Osmund, Jacob, and John; sisters, Christina (Nels) Almskog, Jenny Rodland, Agnes (Pete) Wolden, Inga Rodland, Laura (Folke) Gustafson, Jacobena (Albert) Mattson, and Jarda (Pete) Johnson; as well as nieces and nephews.
Aunt Molly is survived by her nieces and nephews, Cliff (Gertrude)? Elmwood, Aggie (John) Jacobsen, Joyce Asplund, Joyce (Ginter) Smith, Rudy (Joan) Gustafson, Raymond (Jackie) Gustafson, Jim (Barb) Gustafson, Larry Loney, Audrey (Clarence) LeForte, Janice (Robert) Munn, Gay Derksen, Larry (Anita) Mattson, Paul (Sharron) Johnson, Ann (Otto) Erb, Don (Jody) Johnson, and Janey (Stan) Novak.
She also leaves behind numerous great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service.
Pastor Robert Ek will officiate, with interment in the Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers will be Rudy Gustafson, Raymond Gustafson, Jim Gustafson, Larry Mattson, Don Johnson, and Paul Johnson.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Kenora-Rainy River Lung Association, Box 67, Kenora, Ont., P9N 3X4, or the Zion Lutheran Church, 1105 Scott St., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 1J7.

HELEN IRENE BOWMAN

Helen Bowman, 101, of 600 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000.
She was born Aug. 5, 1899 in Newbury, Ont. to the late Robert and Jane Johnston. Helen moved to Stratton, Ont. in 1906.
On May 11, 1921, she was united in marriage to Clarence Bowman. Following their marriage, they lived in Sleeman, Ont. for many years and raised animals, primarily fox and mink.
In the 1940s, they moved to Emo, Ont. to live until later moving to Fort Frances in 1995. Helen was very involved with knitting and chocheting, and was very proud of her button quilts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Bowman, on Feb. 16, 1950; three sisters, Sylvia Sundin, Gladys McGrath, and Myrtle Noble; four brothers, Roy, William, Lawrence, and Clifford Johnston; and two sons-in-law, Alex Yuill and Ted Bovair.
Helen is survived by four children, Sylvia Bovair of Langley, B.C., Freda Yuill of Fort Frances, Ont., Alphild Yuill and husband, John, of Red Rock, Ont., and Gordon Bowman and wife, Rita, of Port Hope, Ont.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Terry Yuill, Brenda (Yuill) Maenpaa, Sharon (Yuill) Tracy, Kenny Yuill (Jean), Donald Yuill, Judy (Bovair) Raynard, Valerie (Bovair) Reese, Dennis Bowman, Mary (Bowman) Chilvers, Peter Bowman, Susan Bowman, and Gordon Yuill (Colleen); 11 great-grandchildren, Christine (Raynard) McNurney, Marc Yuill, Kerry Yuill, Dale Tracy and Jordan Tracy, Kristen Maenpaa, Shauna Maenpaa, Scott Maenpaa, Max Reese, Jack Reese, and Lawrence Reese; one great-great-grandchild, Cody Yuill; one brother, Leslie Johnston of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Rev. Merna Major officiated, with interment in Fort Frances cemetery in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were Gordon Yuill, Terry Yuill, Ken Yuill, Donald Yuill, Jim Tracy, and Jarma Maenpaa.
Honourary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Susan Bowman, Mary Chilvers, Brenda Maenpaa, Sharon Tracy, Judy Raynard, and Valerie Reese.
Should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to either St. John’s Anglican Church, 360 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 1E1, or St. George’s Anglican Church, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.

NELLA SIMONE BAKER

In loving memory of Nella Simone Baker, 75, of Rose Manor, Fort Frances, Ont., who passed away Friday, Oct. 27, 2000 after a brief illness with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 6, 1925 in Pinewood, Ont. to the late Prosper and Georgina Davidson.
Nella enjoyed Bingo, crocheting, and babysitting her great-niece, Danielle, and nephews, Travis and Eric. She was a very caring and giving person, who was always willing to lend a hand.
She is survived by one brother, Leonard (Arlie) of Dryden, Ont.; three sisters, Verna Labelle of Thunder Bay, Ont., Theresa (Leo) Eberts of Wynward, Sask., and Eleanor (Don) Kuchma of Fort Frances, Ont.; and sisters-in-law, Irene Davidson of Sarnia, Ont. and Elsie Davidson of Thunder Bay, Ont.
She was a very special aunt to Diane Grabowski, Wendy Woodgate, Penny, Kevin, and Ricky Kuchma, and Kathy Bois. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Nella was predeceased by her two brothers, Clarence and Fred Davidson; and three sisters, Delia Carpenter, Isabel Nilson, and Helen Davidson.
A visitation was held Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with parish prayers at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral mass was held Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Father Eugene Whyte O.M.I. officiated, with interment in the Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were René Davidson, Leo Eberts, Richard Davidson, John Morin, Ron Deschenes, and Kevin Kuchma.
Honourary pallbearers were Gwen Bradley, Donna Mae Deschenes, Debbie Karpowich, Rosanna Gartley, and Rose Marie Morin.
The family requests that in memoriam donations be directed to the charity of your choice.

BRECK CHERNASKI

In loving memory of Breck Chernaski, who passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Breck was born March 7, 1927 to the late Karl and Antonina (Klopouschak) Chernaski.
Breck leaves to mourn his loving wife, Willa; brothers, Ed (Alice), and Phillip (Dianne); sisters, Reggie (Mrs. Ford MacLeod), Wanda (Mrs. Roy Folz), and Clem (Mrs. Emory Schiller).
Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Allan (Dorothy) Hayes, and Glen (Carol) Becker; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Breck was predeceased by his parents; his only daughter, Patti-Sue in 1995; and brothers, John, Karl, “Tap,” and Hammy.
Breck worked for 12 years in the yard office in Fort Frances for the C.N.R. In 1957, he was employed as payroll clerk for Mando at Camp 113 in Atikokan. Then on Sept. 23, 1958, he was hired as an assessor in Fort Frances.
On April 3, 1959, he became a firefighter. He was appointed fire chief on July 24, 1976, and held that position with pride until his retirement on March 31, 1987.
Breck was a well-known figure in Fort Frances. He was past president of the Rotary Club, and very proud of their accomplishments. He volunteered for many activities, including setting up the big tent for the annual bass tournament, setting off Canada Day fireworks, Red Cross service, the Santa Claus parade, manning the Salvation Army kettle, and many others.
He really loved to fish and enjoyed hunting partridge, ducks, and geese. He was an avid sports fan, with hockey, boxing and baseball being his favourites. Breck also was a superb cook, and was well-known for his cabbage rolls.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Patrick Playfair officiating.
Honourary pallbearers will be Pete Fylkow, Walter Wowchuk, Allan Hayes, Glen Becker, Bob Brown, and Les Howarth.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 840 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2N5.

AGNES BARBARA (KEHL) ROWLAND

Agnes Rowland, 82, of R.R.1, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Friday, Oct. 27, 2000.
She was born Dec. 24, 1917 in Waterloo Township, Ont. to Henry and Agnes Kehl. After living in Saskatchewan, the Kehl family homesteaded in the Crozier District, where Agnes attended Crozier #3 school.
She was employed in Winnipeg, Man., returning home frequently to work on the family farm and care for her parents.
On June 30, 1956, she married W. Clifford Rowland and they farmed in Crozier.
During the years 1958-1962, she worked as a cook at Tricomi’s Camp Manitou. Her hobbies included singing, gardening, crocheting, and keeping in touch with relatives and her many friends.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Cliff, in 1998; brothers, Carl in infancy, Walter, and Harold; and sisters, Lottie in infancy, Millie Kruger, Nettie Buffington, Elma Tate, Clara Law, and Alice Broughton.
She is lovingly remembered by brothers, Ken (Helen) Kehl and Dave (Muriel) Kehl; and her many nieces and nephews, along with many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Fort Frances. President John DeFrancesco officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Visitation was held prior to services on Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Pallbearers were Norbert Bragg, Allan McTavish, Don McTavish, Ken McTavish, Doug McTavish, and Bob McTavish.
Agnes’ wishes would be that “all” her friends also be her honourary pallbearers.
Should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society, P.O. Box 444, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 840 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2N5.

MARTHA ELLEN JARVINEN (ROEN)

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother, Martha Jarvinen, quietly at the Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home on Oct. 25, 2000.
Martha was born in Redby, Mn. She was educated in Fort Frances, Ont., later residing in the Vermilion Bay-Quibell area.
Martha was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed the outdoors, family gatherings, cooking, and sewing. She also had a great appreciation for music, Christianity Fellowship, and working with handicapped children.
No matter the circumstances, Martha always found time for her family and dear friends.
She was employed by the Ministry of Natural Resources at Blue Lake Provincial Park until she was stricken by a serious illness in 1980.
Martha is leaving to mourn her three daughters, Shirley Mills (Jim) of Chilliwack, B.C., Carol LaForte (Len) of Dryden, and Diane Fast (Ed) of Chilliwack, B.C.; her beloved son, Edwin Jarvinen of Thunder Bay, Ont.; grandsons, Darrell, Darren, and Chris; sisters, Ester and Beatrice; brothers-in-law, Bill and Tom; sister-in-law, Diane; and many nieces and nephews, and many very close dear friends.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Sulo, in 1987; brothers, Melvin and Minard; and sisters, Jeanette and Julie.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 at 1 p.m. in the United Pentecostal Church, with Pastor Irwin Wurch officiating.
Interment was in the Dryden cemetery beside her husband.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Darrell and Darren Mills, and Chris LaForte; and friends, Tom Doherty, Ed Monty, and Maurice Frenette.
Should friends so desire, in memoriam donations made to the Dryden Regional Health Centre would be greatly appreciated through the Stevens Funeral Homes “Moffat Chapel,” 50 Albert St., Box 412, Dryden, Ont., P8N 2Z1.
