Gene Louis Yachetti
July 31, 1913 - May 14, 2007

With much sadness, but also with thanksgiving for a long life well-lived, the family of Gene Yachetti regret to announce his passing at the Hamilton General Hospital on a beautiful spring day, his favourite season of the year. Gene was a devoted husband for 65 years to Irma Speranzini, who predeceased him in 2004. He is the loving father of Geraldine and Gene and father-in-law of Stan Augustyniak and Gaye Yachetti. He is predeceased by his daughter Jo-Ann in 2002, his parents Francesco and Antonina Yachetti, sisters Patricia and Anne and brothers Americo and James. Survived by sister Helen Galan, sister-in-law Lillian Speranzini and many loving nieces and nephews. Gene was an avid athlete all his life, one of the first to win his "wings" for athletic achievement in rugby and hockey at Hamilton Technical Institute in 1931. He was an avid and talented tennis player, winning many trophies along with his brother James. Gene was an employee of the Dominion Glass Company from 1931-1982 and was an active member of the Dominion Glass Retirees' Club. He served in the Canadian Navy aboard the H.M.C.S. Glace Bay from 1943-45 and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 58. Gene enjoyed a long retirement in which he cultivated many new hobbies such as stained glass, wine making, golf and also continued a life-long interest in gardening. He leaves a legacy of pride in Canada, in Hamilton - he was a fierce fan of the Tiger-Cats - of hard work, decency and of great moral courage and stoicism in his final years as he faced the illness and deaths of his daughter, wife, and his own declining health. He valued honesty and integrity in others, and was respected for those fine qualities himself. The family wishes to thank the Hamilton General Hospital, Wards 5 West and 6 South, for their wonderful care and compassion for Dad this past week, particularly Dr. Yuddin and nurse Corinne. Visitation will be at the FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton Street East (near James) on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Vigil Prayers at 3 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at St. John The Baptist Church on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 12 noon. Private cremation to follow. A donation to your favourite charity in Gene's memory would be appreciated by the family or plant and nourish your favourite flower or shrub in his honour. As an accomplished gardener who won many trillium awards in his life and was a life-long lover of nature, "May you rest in God's beautiful garden, Dad."
