SMITH, Lorna
Saturday, December 17, 2005
Miss Lorna Ethel Smith, aged 67 years passed on peacefully in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Thursday, December 15, 2005. She was born and raised in Port Arthur. Lorna loved her chosen profession, teaching which she began at Black Bay Road School and later was asked to transfer to Gron Morgan Highschool when it first opened. She moved to Sault Ste Marie in 1970 to take up a teaching position at Alexander Henry Highschool, where she taught until her retirement. In earlier years, Lorna loved adventure and travel. She was always driving her latest car whenever she had the chance. Her travels took her along the Alaska Highway in 1969, Las Vegas when it was just a small town, skiing in Colorado and numerous trips into Northern Minnesota. As she traveled, she was constantly learning and stopping to take in the sights. On her return from Florida, she brought with her a new hobby - raising seahorses and other tropical fish many years before it became popular. Lorna has been known to enjoy the odd evening at the local casino and 'across the river'. For a time, she lived in Goulais River where she took full advantage of country living which included two horses, a pet pig, and several adopted critters from the outdoors, especially one big rabbit. Her loving spirit went far beyond taking in many animals; in addition to Lorna's door, her heart was also always open in welcome for friends and neighbors to drop in. Lorna is survived by her mother Ethel Smith, brother Basil (Alice), sisters Ruth Lovelady and Marion (Pentti) Paularinne. She was a wonderful aunt and will be greatly missed by Sarah (Mark) and Jenna Cernjul, Michael and Rob Paularinne. Lorraine Smith, Sandy Smith and Andrea Vester, Fred and Tom Lovelady and 'Babes'. Lorna was predeceased by her father Basil Dec 17, 1974. Friends may call at the Northwood Funeral Home (942 Great Northern Road 945-7758) on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 from 12:00 noon until time of Funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Monsignor Bernard Burns officiating . Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Thunder Bay, Tuesday December 27, 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Susan Ivany officiating. The family wishes to thank Dr. Walde, his staff and the staff on the 4th floor of the Plummer General Hospital for their care and compassion during our difficult time. We would also like to express sincere thanks to her many friends who phoned, helped her throughout this past year and a half with snowshoveling, mail, newspapers and errands. There are so many. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, a memorial in Lorna's name to a charity of your choice would greatly be appreciated.
