MALONE, Edward James
Sunday, January 21, 2007
In his 99th year at the Great Northern Nursing Centre on Friday evening, January 19, 2007. Beloved husband of Genevieve (nee Thompson); dear father of Carol Ann Pagnucco (late Joseph), Colleen Kurtz (Larry), Erin Heineman, Karen Allard (Jean-Marie), Paddy Gartshore (Leo) and Michael (Patricia Ortega). Loving grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Born in 1908, Ed spent his entire life in the Sault where his roots in the community run deep and wide. It was a life shaped by faith, family and music and each of these elements informed and strengthened the others. He met Genevieve, the love of his life, when she was 14 and he was 20. She was a pianist and he a tenor. Eventually, they married and for 50 years they were organist (Gen) and choirmaster (Ed), first at Blessed Sacrament Church and later at Precious Blood Cathedral, their music ministry profoundly reinforcing a life of faith. In those early years, Ed sang many roles in G&S; productions staged by the operatic society and for a time had his own weekly radio show. Over the next four decades he was regularly called upon to emcee variety programs and fundraisers and to sing at weddings, funerals and civic events. He was a President of the Community Concert Association and helped found the Musical Comedy Guild in the 1960's. For 25 years, he worked at the Sault Star in a variety of positions and was instrumental in establishing the typographical union there. In the late 1940's, he joined Investors' Syndicate (later Investors' Group) and developed the company's first private group pension plan in Canada for the Sault Star's employees. While his six children were of school age, he served for a time as a separate school board trustee. In the 1960's and 70's with children educated, married and otherwise launched, Ed and Gen travelled abroad, visiting The Holy Land, Europe and the Caribbean. At home, Grampa delighted in a growing brood of grandchildren and had an inexhaustible supply of energy for playing 'horsey' or taking small charges down to the government dock to see the boats. In 1978, Ed was ordained a Deacon in the Church and regularly visited the sick in hospital to bring holy communion as well as baptizing grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great nephews and nieces. Last July as Ed and Gen celebrated 70 years of marriage in his hospital room, he raised a glass in gratitude for their many blessings. His sense of wonder and gratitude for the mystery and beauty in life was with him even then. The family wishes to thank Dr. F. Ianni and the staff and residents of the Great Northern Nursing Centre for their unfailing kindness and attentive care. Friends may call at the Northwood Funeral Home on Monday, January 22nd from 6 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Precious Blood Cathedral on Tuesday, January 23rd at 11 a.m. with Msgr. Victor Amadio officiating. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions made to Precious Blood Cathedral, Algoma Residential Community Hospice (A.R.C.H.) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
