SINCLAIR M.D. FRCSC, Alexander Boyd
Sunday, June 08, 2008
passed away peacefully among family at his home on June 6, 2008 at the age of 85. Ever-loving husband to Sheila (Grant); father to Janet Prowse (Clif), Sheila Della Valle (Victor), Barbara Cundari (Lui), Nancy Fewchuk (Ted), Sandy, and, Margaret Dodds (Tom); grandfather to Clifton (Jen) and David Prowse, Mark Della Valle (Shannon) and Elisa Crabtree (Jim), Becky Stanley (Scott), Jenny Stinson (Trevor), Michael and Katey Cundari, Peter Fewchuk (Katie) and Sarah Fewchuk, Nicholas and Zachary Dodds; great-grandfather to Ashley, David, Ben, Caitlyn, and Alexis; and brother-in-law to George Grant (Betty). Beloved son of the late Alexander Sinclair and Mabel (Boyd); step-son of the late Anne (Egglesfield) and brother of the late Donald and John (who died in infancy). Beloved friend, doctor, and colleague to many. Alex was born and raised in the Sault. As the son of a doctor, he grew up in a household in which tonsillectomies were performed on the kitchen table as emergency wards had not yet been devised. As a young teenager, he assisted his Dad, travelling by horse and sled to more remote areas where he would hold the lamp as his father set a patient's arm or provided other treatment. After serving in the Army Medical Corp and attaining a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Alex returned to the Sault in 1951 where he practiced general surgery for 40 years until his retirement in 1991. His participation in medicine went beyond his general surgery practice. In 1952, at a time when children suffering from such medical conditions as spina bifida, congenital dislocation of the hips, and cerebral palsy were kept at home because there was no facility that could provide them with schooling while meeting their medical needs, he in conjunction with others and the Rotary Club (an organization of which he was a proud member for 58 years) founded the Sault Ste Marie Children's Rehabilitation Unit (housed in William Merrifield School). A few years later, he attended various European facilities gathering information on their treatment techniques, which were then adopted here. For many years, he spent a portion of each week treating these children. He participated in the local, provincial, and national governing bodies of medical association. His activities ranged from being hospital Chief of Staff and a founder member of the Doctor's Building to making submissions to the Hall Commission in support of the formation of Medicare - "So that patients would not wait until it was too late before they went to see their doctor". He loved the Sault and cared deeply about the well-being of its citizens. Though this sentiment was shown through his participation in countless projects including being a member of the founding committee of Algoma College (now university), it was perhaps most obviously demonstrated through the gift of Strathclair (the 350 acre family farm) that he and his wife Sheila gave to the city for $1.00 in 1967, their only stipulation being that it be used for park, recreation and educational purposes. Over the course of his career he has received many awards at the local, provincial and national levels. The May 1985 issue of Canadian Doctor featured him as one of 50 MDs Who Stand Out in History. That article concluded: " ....The foregoing does not complete a proper appreciation of this remarkable man. His greatest gifts have been on a more personal level and many will never be revealed. He is a devoted husband of 47 years to his wife, Sheila, the father of six and grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of five. He will be remembered best for his kindness, his humour, his unfailing courtesy, his thoughtfulness, his eloquence in the appreciation of the efforts of others, his tolerance of human foibles, his constant availability to those in trouble - including friends, patients and colleagues - and his understanding and compassion for human weaknesses. But his most enduring role is that of encourager." The world is a better place because he was in it. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 2 pm. Rev. Phil Miller officiating. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (A.R.C.H.), Children's Rehabilitation Centre/Algoma, the Sault Area Hospital, and St. Andrew's United Church.

Friends may call at the Northwood Funeral Home (942 Great Northern Road 945-7758) on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Veronica's Church on Tuesday June 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Ron Ambeault officiating. Bruna will be buried with her husband Mario at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial donations made to Algoma Residential Community Hospice (A.R.C.H.), the Sault Area Hospitals, St. Veronica's Church or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. A special thank you to Dr. Bignell, Dr. Ianni and the wonderful nursing staff of 200A for their wonderful constant care of our Mother and Nonna.
