Arwa, Christine (nee Paul)
March 24, 1908 to September 10, 2007
She died peacefully, after suffering a stroke, with her family by her side, just a few months short of her 100th birthday. Predeceased by her husband Peter in 1959. She was much loved by her only daughter, Dr. Eleonore Schumacher, and her son-in-law, Dr.Julius Schumacher, and her grandchildren Peter, Sylvia and Andrew. Her grand-children became the main interest in her life, and she never ceased to indulge them with her famous baking, given the opportunity. They in turn adored their Oma, and visited her as often as they could. Christine was born in the erstwhile Austria-Hungary, into a large family of German farmers. She spent happy years with a numerous extended family. Her passion was singing in the church choir, and she remained firmly anchored in her church and religion. A drastic change occurred in 1944, when Christine walked out of her home, with her young daughter, fleeing the onslought of the advancing Russian army and the partisans.
After four miserable years spent in Refugee Camps, the re-united family emigrated to Canada. This truly became Home, and Christine loved her new country. She found friends and fellowship in her church. She took a keen interest in the life of her daughter and son-in-law, and her grand-children.
She will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews in Germany, especially Erna and Adelheid.
A decidedly independent woman, failing health convinced her to Extendicare. She made friends with, and received excellent care, from the dedicated and kind nurses and staff at her last Residence.
The family wishes to extend special thanks in appreciation of the kindness shown to our mother by all the staff at Extendicare at Southwood Lakes. Visitation Wednesday 7-9pm and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9pm with parish prayers on Thursday at 8pm at Morris Sutton Funeral Home, (68 Giles Blvd East, Windsor, Ontario N9A 4B7. Funeral service Friday at 2 pm at First Lutheran Church (160 Giles Blvd West). Interment Victoria Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the First Lutheran Christian Academy.
