Mr. Ludwig Valentine Hack
August 23, 1922 - September 16, 2007
Ludwig Valentine (Val) Hack passed on peacefully at home on Sunday, September 16, 2007 in his 85th year. Loving husband to Yvonne and father of Brian, Nancy, Charles, Catherine and their spouses. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Kristen, Bryan, Kyle, Kalvin, Esther, Sarah, and great grandchildren Togan, and Mattia, his large extended family and many friends.
On August 23, 1922, in Saskatchewan, Val was born to Anna Marie (Mundt) and Valentine Hack. Val grew up on the prairies during the depression and often recounted his success at grade school to his love for baseball, a sport that he could play after his school work was done and which accounted for his stories of extra play time.
After World War II, Val left the air force and enrolled in the University of Manitoba to eventually become a Chartered Accountant, marry Yvonne McHugh and start a family in Winnipeg. In 1963 he moved with his family to Toronto, Ontario. Val left Revenue Canada to practice as a tax specialist in the private sector. He eventually became a senior partner in Hack, Curran & Associates until his retirement.
Val’s retirement ambition was realized on Vancouver Island, near Sooke, British Columbia. He considered maintaining close relationships with his family – especially his children – a top priority, and it was one that he fulfilled admirably. He welcomed new members of the family with open arms and was delighted by the birth of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Among his many interests were curling, golf, baseball, travel and reading. While much of his travel involved motor trips with his family, visiting his Florida condominium, he also enjoyed trips to England and Spain.
Dear friends and associates in Winnipeg and Toronto, join family in remembering Val for his understated and casual approach to life. Val is resting at the Sands Funeral Chapel – Colwood at 317 Goldstream. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 21 at 11 a.m. and interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
