Hester English (nee Armstrong)
1921 ~ 2007
It is with deepest regret that we have to announce that Hester has stopped blessing our lives at the age of 85.
She will be deeply missed by her husband of 62 years Ralph, and her son Desmond. Joining us in loss are her surviving siblings Jack, Donald, Marion (Bill), Evelyn (Paul), Patricia, and sister-in-law Marion English, along with a family of many nieces and nephews.
Hester was predeceased by her parents Robert and Elizabeth Armstrong, along with siblings Maud, Howard, Betty, Dorothy and baby Jimmy.
Hester was born in Makinak, MB and in 1927 moved to Winnipeg. Early life was kept busy helping to care for her many cherished brothers and sisters. She attended Kelvin High School and graduated in 1940. A few years later, she met and eventually married the love of her life Ralph in 1944. They took up residence in St. Vital on Fifth Avenue and in 1961 moved to Bank Avenue. Hester played the lead role as a wife, mother, teacher, nurse, coordinator and comedian to her family and any person that was fortunate enough to cross her path.
Over the years, she worked as a secretary for World Book Encyclopedia (1963-1965) and Brotman and Cramer Law Offices (1967-1973). However her proudest accomplishment was with Parks Canada (Engineering and Architecture). She started in 1973 with Regional Manager (Les Clark) and the department grew to become The Prairie Regional Office. There her unique personality touched the hearts of many people.
Hester had many hobbies she squeezed into her unselfish schedule. Sewing took up much of her time, as she loved making clothes. When time permitted she also enjoyed painting, piano, gardening, crocheting, needlepoint, knitting and cooking.
The family would like to thank the staff at Oakview Care Centre for their care and kindness during her stay.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2007 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Canadian Mint).
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations in Hester’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of MB, 200-6 Donald St.
Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 455 LAGIMODIERE BLVD.
