Mrs Jessie Irwin
October 29, 1919 - August 27, 2007

It is with deep sadness that the family of Jessie Irwin announces her passing on Monday, August 27, 2007. Jessie passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by the love of her family.
Jessie was born in Pitlochry, Scotland, October 29, 1919 were she and her sister Sheila helped out in the family business-a bakery and tea room (John Smith & Sons Bakery). During her school years Jessie studied ballet and was the captain of her grass hockey team.
Jessie was a World War II veteran, having served her country proudly for years in the W.R.N.S. (Women's Royal Navel Service). Her tour of duty took her to many places, the most notable being Australia where she was stationed at the submarine base. She also liked to drive and drove an ambulance as well as other military vehicles in the line of duty.
Jessie moved to Fort William after the war accompanied by her parents in 1948 where she married Jack, her husband of 58 years. Together they raised a family of five children. Home and family were first and foremost. She took great pride in cooking for her family, especially her Sunday signature roast beef and potato dinners. Fridays were a special time too when Grandma hosted her Friday night coffee parties. Everybody was welcome to drop by and you could always count on lots of goodies. To all who knew her, Jessie was a strong, loving and generous lady with a great love for animals as well. She was always giving and volunteered with many local groups and charities. Never did she return home from a trip without bearing gifts for others.
Jessie's most cherished group was the "Knitting Club"- a social and support network of 14 dear friends who gathered regularly at each others homes-sometimes even knitting as well. Jessie was a beautiful knitter and would often whip up her creations while watching TV, especially hockey, adjusting the speed of her knitting with the intensity of the game. There was lots of love woven into each stitch and it was an honour to be presented with a piece of her work. She was very creative and was recognized for volunteering her talent for 40 years to the McKellar General Hospital Auxiliary craft room, later transferring her skills to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. To say Jessie enjoyed the game of hockey would be an understatement. She had a lifelong love of the sport and although she had a great interest in the Leaf's games, it was her grandchildren's games that she was most proud to support. She was their greatest fan.
Jessie will be sadly missed by her husband Jack, her daughter Joan (Dave) Ruberry, Leanne & Ian, son Jock Irwin (Mary Long-Irwin), Jonathan, Jacqueline, Carla & Carole, son James (Kerry), Kirstyn, Brent & Haley, daughter Judy, and her daughters Erin (Trevor) Dunn, great grandson Evander, Riley Bascello-Martin (Fred) and great-grandchildren Elora and Reid, son Jeffrey and sister Sheila (Lloyd) Mark of Kingston, Ontario She was predeceased by her parents John & Ellen Smith.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Jenkens Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 from 7- 9 p.m. A memorial service and Celebration of Jessie's life will take place on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church with Rev. Deborah Kraft officiating. If friends so desire, donations to the charity of their choice would be greatly appreciated. Interment will take place at a later date.
