Cherished Mom of Heather McLeod and her fiancé Stephen Ruttan, of Hamilton, and Jennifer McLeod and her husband Michael Jeske, of Kitchener. Treasured sister of Jane and Bud Field of Paris, ON, Mary Anne and Bill Leigh, of Kitchener, and Jim and Bonnie Tincknell, of Belleville, ON. Adored daughter-in-law of Edith McLeod, of Waterloo and sister-in-law of Wayne and Susan Stevens, of Waterloo. Special aunt to Chelsea Leigh, as well as to all the members of the Stevens and Tincknell families. Special “grammy” to Morgan daughter of Master Bdr James and Richelle Akeroyd of Chalk River, ON., stepdaughters Elizabeth and Christine and devoted companion Merced (Ninia) Tagalog. Dear friend of Ivan and Sandra Anderson, Jim and Heather Murdock, Barry and Kathy Kiggins, Dianne Aves, Betty Townshend, Trudie Robbins, Brad and Ellen Luelo, Mandy and Jamie Badrian, Peter and Elizabeth Moffat, Pat and John Weber, Conestogo, Alan and Nicole Mockler, Montreal, Dr. William Akeroyd and family Vancouver; Dr's John and Christine Martin, Inverness Scotland as well as countless others. She will be deeply missed by her close friends at Queensmount Senior Public School, Kitchener and the many new friends she had made as she setup a second home with Jim in Saint John New Brunswick. The family would also like to thank the Waterloo CCAC team, Dr Bob Hunter, Kitchener and the doctors of the Hamilton Juravinski Cancer Centre for their caring and support of Barb through her long journey.
Barb was predeceased by her first husband, Bill McLeod, and her parents, Luke and Hope Tincknell, of Paris, ON.
Barb was first and foremost a proud and loving mother. She was also a wonderful, caring and generous wife, sibling, friend, and teacher. She was born in Paris, ON, where she spent the entirety of her childhood. She was an energetic child, who succeeded both at academics and athletics. She attended teacher's college at McMaster University and later returned to Guelph University to complete a degree in English and theatre arts. She taught at several elementary schools, took a leave to dedicate herself to parenting, and then returned to Queensmount Senior Public School in the late 1980s. Barb established herself as a remarkable teacher who inspired both her students and her colleagues. She taught English and math and directed several musical productions, while acting as a supportive mentor and friend to her fellow staff.
In recent years, Barb was an avid fan of her daughter's careers, both scholastic and athletic. She adored her “boys”, Cody and Spooky, and the new addition of Oakley. She was a knowledgeable and dedicated sports fan. She traveled frequently with Jim, to Western and Eastern Canada, Boston, and Sanibel Island, Florida. Barb loved visiting with her granddaughter, Morgan, spending time at her cabin, gardening, bird watching, renovating and decorating her home, riding her bicycle, going to movies, and visiting her favourite people.
As her health declined over the past year, Barb inspired us all with her ability to embrace every day of her life, and to find joy and humour during the most difficult of times. She fought an incredibly long and hard battle, but continued to focus only on the needs and lives of others. Her life was miraculous in many ways; she will be cherished forever by those who were blessed to share her life.
Interment will be at Memory Gardens followed by a Celebration of Life Service on, Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Parkminster United Church, 275 Erb Street East, Waterloo, 2:00 p.m.
Donations in memory of Barbara (Barb) Ellen McLeod can be made to the Hamilton Juravinski Cancer Centre.
