Abbie Nunn, 93
LANSDOWNE -- Abbie Nunn, 93, who with her husband, Cliff, started and ran the Lansdowne grocery still in the family today, died April 28, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a woman who at each stage of her life moved gracefully and with determination in the face of challenges and who accepted life's changes.
She was born Abbie Alma McNeil on January 19, 1911 in Lansdowne. Her parents were Charles McNeil and the former Nellie Hurst. On October 4, 1934, she married Clifford Nunn, of Lyn. They were business partners from the start of their marriage.
Starting with a mobile meat delivery business in Lyn, they established a small store below the hill in Lansdowne in the late 1930s. Due to war rationing, the store was closed and they returned to the McNeil farm.
Farm life was familiar to Mrs. Nunn, as she had managed the household of the farm early in her life, while she and her brothers Bryce and John farmed in the early 1930s.
In 1947, the Nunns purchased Sheild's store in Lansdowne and became proprietors of Nunn's Grocery store, "the store at the top of the hill." It was a typical country store selling everything from hat pins and rubber boots to flour and sugar. A formidable team, the Nunns oversaw the change from a country store to a modern self-serve grocery store.
Mrs. Nunn's skill as an organizer complemented her husband's entrepreneurial spirit and was an important element in the growth of the business. She was very proud that the store has passed through three generations of her family and today their Lansdowne Food Market is owned by her two oldest grandsons.
She and her husband retired in 1965 and built a new home. After her husband's death in 1967, Mrs. Nunn became involved daily in the lives of her four grandsons and enjoyed weekends with her granddaughters.
She was a skilled seamstress, quilter and needlewoman, finishing her last piece of crewel work just weeks before her death. She was a versatile gardener who always had plants and until recent years kept window boxes.
An artist in the kitchen, she was a great baker and could be depended on for birthday cakes.
She was a longtime active member of St. John's Anglican Church in Lansdowne: she was past president of the Guild and the church's Anglican Church Women group and was a member of the Altar Guild. In earlier years she had been involved with Little Helpers and Junior WA.
She moved to Brockville in 1991 and continued to quilt with Trinity Anglican Church Quilters for several years.
Mrs. Nunn is survived by two daughters, Gail Abrams and husband Glenn of Brockville and Shirley Nunn of Lansdowne; six grandchildren, Silvan and fiancee Patti Fraser, Yulrick and wife Kathy, Stefan, Kurt Fernitich and wife Sarah, Lianne Johnsen (nee Abrams) and husband Warren, Jennifer Abrams and husband Bill Jackson; and seven great-grandchildren, Cole and Ali, Paige and Jade, and Ethan, Glenn and Neil. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers Donald, Bryce and John McNeil and sister Grace.
Friends called at St. John's Anglican Church, April 30, before the funeral at 2 p.m. Rev. Reg Gilbert officiated, assisted by Rev. Ron Hörst, who gave the homily. Grandson Stefan Fernitich played the organ and during the service sang Like an Eagle.
The pallbearers were grandsons Silvan, Yulrick, Stefan and Kurt Fernitich and grandson-in-law Warren Johnsen.
Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, was entrusted with arrangements.
